Re: Challenge 1018: The glass tank
That's a leap of imagination Anna. Fun! I remember butterflies like them Loyd in our garden when I was a child. Red Admirals they were called. You never see them nowadays. Your image puts me in mind of an irrelevant story (except to butterflies). Some twenty years ago I photographed 'Gandhi My Father' an Indian Hindi movie. We were shooting at night in a hilly region called Mahabaleshwar and I was using my usual technique of bouncing the light off large white sheets to produce an indirect soft wash. It's a technique I had been using constantly without problems. This particular night was the first night of the rainy season and the climate changed, bringing with it a quite extraordinary phenomenon. Suddenly I noticed that my light was starting to flicker and get dimmer. The reason was thousands of moths attracted by the light swarming the reflectors. When I went over to investigate they swarmed to my white top as well. I have never seen anything quite like it before or since. They also flew directly into the hot lamps themselves where they became incinerated on the lenses. The shoot had to be abandoned. The next day the residue on the lenses proved to be so welded and fused to the glass that it was impossible to remove and they had to be scrapped. My apologies Steve for straying so far off topic. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks Anna...! I've seen clips from Harry Potter films, but never watched a complete movie. David, these are Monarchs but I am familiar with Red Admirals. |

Yes. I had no idea what they really are. Not my expertise. It was just that seeing them reminded immediately of the Red Admirals of my childhood. They were quite common along with the even commoner Cabbage White. I can remember chasing after them in the garden. I haven't seen either for many, many years now. Part of this is obviously being a city dweller, but I believe one of the reasons is insecticides affecting the caterpillar population. The childhood memory is very vivid and potent still. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

First to enter the tank this week was GKB, with a rather fine pair of dinosaurs. I like how you’ve managed the shine, and the boy in the background adds interest. I enjoyed the Trump entry, but why are Biden and Kamala distorted? Again, good work keeping the reflection. A splendid alien from lwc, with his intelligent species. The flies and tongue are a real bonus here, as is the revolving globe and Matrix-style text. The chameleon entry is very pretty. I like the pulsating aliens. The Horny Toad entry gives a good perspective, and the photographic side panels work well. Is the wyvern a real thing? Very nicely reset. Perhaps some reflection needed on the inside of the glass. The butterfly entry is glorious. An environmentally-aware entry from Ben Boardman, beautifully integrated into the tank. The placard might have been easier to read if it was leaning against the tank, perhaps? And watch those Layer Style drop shadows on the coral in front – it never looks convincing. A difficult concept from DavidMac, rather neatly achieved. Actually I was rather impressed with the way you’ve flattened the snake against the front of the glass: it certainly works for me. And the distorted mesh top is cute, although it’s only distorted in one dimension. Good to see the gnomes back – a really funny entry. And the butterfly story is priceless. I enjoyed michael sinclair’s leaping snake, neatly held within its cage. The moving people are really good – I like how you’ve turned the man’s head in the reflection – and the fact that the shadows move as well is a good touch (but watch the woman’s sudden spiked heel). Plenty of creepy crawlies from Frank, both inside and out. I like the shadows, and all the poses. Could the hands do with reflections in the glass? It’s Harry Potter time for tooquilos, complete with its model of Hogwarts. A splendid animated version, with Harry escaping through the wall of the vivarium. Shame you couldn’t find a 3D model of him on a broomstick! |

Delighted to hear it. I really struggled with it.
Yes. You are quite right. How silly of me. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

From a Google search: "Since the sixteenth century, in English, Scottish, and Irish heraldry, heraldic wyverns are defined as distinct entities from heraldic dragons. The key difference has been that a wyvern has two legs, whereas a dragon has four." Thanks Steve, this was fun to play with. |
