Again great entries and some good and funny animations Loyd. David, rather than get too carried away I just tried a little of the bloat tool (liquify) on the cockpit. Loyd, the one above is how my eyes looked after this one. ![]() |

Frank, et al, I not trying to provoke you all into attempting a very unexpected and tricky optical effect. This is a challenge about fun and ideas, it's there to be enjoyed. I posted in such detail because I was so completely astonished and taken aback by what I discovered. I had no idea that was how it would work! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1039: The supersub
How many Brits remember this? ![]() For non Brits the Eagle was a very popular boy's comic in my young days. It's 3d (threepence) price tag (a little over 1 penny in today's money) was one third of my week's pocket money! The front page was always Dan Dare - Pilot of the Future. His rocket on the left below will show you immediately why I thought of him for this challenge. Dan Dare reflected the old British class system. He was an officer and in keeping with officers and gentlemen of the period he smoked a pipe! In the British armed forces of that period officer's had personal men servants or orderlies known as batmen. Dan Dare's loyal batman was a white haired older man called Digby from Wigan which, back then, was definitely working class England. Dare's arch enemy was a spindly green midget from northern Venus who had been scientifically engineered for superior intelligence with a huge head and atrophied body. He moved around by floating on a kind of airborne boat. He was called the Mekon and wanted to exterminate all earthlings. Aaaaaah ........ boyhood nostalgia ............... ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

As a a kid I loved The Eagle. I remember one Christmas I really, really wanted a Dan Dare communications toy that I could speak to spaceships with. I never got one. Had to wait until I was 20 when I got to do it for real as a student Air Traffic Controller. _________________ Have you ever noticed that all the instruments designed to detect intelligent life are pointing away from the Earth? |

I was sure this one would strike chord with you Gordon. GKB wrote:

http://vimeo.com/1054359869 I don't know this comic, however, the sub fits into the strip perfectly. Brilliant, David. ![]() _________________ Dorothy: "there's no place like home!" |

Re: Challenge 1039: The supersub
First to go subsea this week was dwindt, with an intriguing repurposing of the submarine. The gumballs and reflections are excellent, and that’s a good stab at the perspective. Lateral thinking! I like GKB's space entry, although your astronaut does seem to be taking up two seats. If not three. A greatly enjoyed the Lego entry, with the pixellated Earth; would an explosion made of Lego be possible? I can’t recognise the man in lwc's underwater entry – is he drinking a cup of coffee? Good bubbles, though, and the passing fish work well, as does the lighting effect on the roof. The way the alien sub scoots along just above the water surface is fun, and those sparks at the back are cute. It works well in London, too, but we seem to have lost the sparks. I like how you’ve taken on board David’s instructional text in your refraction entry, and toned it down for a more acceptable view. Personally, I’d have been tempted to put a light inside the sub. A hilarious quark entry – I love how his feet are pressed up against the glass. Brilliant! And beautifully animated. I see Ant Snell spent his childhood glued to the telly… Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Emo and others populating this remarkably intact Atlantis. I like the position of the sub and the mermaid, almost as if they’re having a conversation. And the bubbles blend everything together well. Nice work. I found it hard to tell if Mariner's entry is set under the sea, or just floating through a rainforest – but I’ll assume the former. Ah yes – there’s a fish above it. I think it’s the strong red that confuses; some blue needed to tie everything together: ![]() I do like the excellent glass dome, though, which has been beautifully rendered. And the people fit perfectly. Flash Gordon time from DavidMac, as befits the styling of this sub. And there he is at the helm – I like the way you’ve extended the seat sides to wrap around the two of them. That must have been remarkably tricky to achieve. Good reflections in the glass, too, although there’s something not quite right about the Ajax, although I can’t quite put my finger on it. The colour, perhaps, against that purple background? ![]() I’m very intrigued by your underwater entry. At first glance the amount of distortion looks excessive, and the glass ring effect seems out of place. But having read your detailed explanation, complete with photographic examples, it does seem to be absolutely correct. Which raises the question: should we do what is actually right, or what looks right? I strongly tend towards the latter, as you know. But I do appreciate the effort you’ve gone to to produce this authentic result. The Dan Dare entry is outstanding – what a great adaptation of the comic! The cartoon treatment of the sub fits perfectly in there. I’d forgotten about the pipe, and Digby… but of course the Mekon is always with us. A beautiful entry from Frank, with excellent lighting and a real sense of atmosphere. The foliage seems rather too brown for underwater, though. I like the sparkle in the treasure chest, a good way of drawing the eye to it. A terrific semi-submerged sub from tooquilos, with immaculate rippling reflections and lighting. A really fine piece of work. Love the robots in the animated version, and the moving reflections on the glass dome are outstanding. I like how it detaches in the desert. Always great to see another of your tour-around-the-world animations! Outstanding work this week. Well done, everyone. |

Thanks Steve The gumball machine was dwindt’s contribution I was really short of time for this one and wanted to make video but had to make do with stills instead. I was amazed to find that LEGO does, actually, make a planet Earth globe although it took a while to find one with reasonably good resolution. I did consider making a LEGO explosion but … time. Re: Challenge 1039: The supersub
It is in fact very brass coloured. I picked up on the golden glow to it's left as well. But I agree some purple pick up from the surrounds would make sense. I think the truth probably lies between the two. Golden highlights purple shadows perhaps? Now the perplexing optics of domes underwater:
I started looking into it simply because I literally hadn't a clue what might happen, aside from some kind of reverse fishbowl effect, and needed a starting point. It was only when I realised how bizarre and totally unexpected my findings were beginning to become, that I really researched it and tried to apply it to my sub. The results, which in theory were not too far removed from a plausible reality, were so odd, that I then produced and published my explanation of what I had attempted to do and why. So .... difficult improbable truth or acceptable supposition? I agree with you, in the context of imaginary imaging, do what looks best. But, in this instance, having gone to all the trouble of researching what might really happen, it seemed somehow churlish and wimpish to then completely ignore it! I also thought its unexpectedness might surprise and intrigue others ...... but that only held true if I explained. Thus the technical post.
I really enjoyed doing that. A major part of my childhood. I loved it! Doing the picture research I realised how terribly gung-ho and British it was. Something I was, of course, completely unaware of at the time. Sorry Steve ... rambling on again ........... _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
