Re: Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
![]() I hadn't intended to enter this week as I felt the only way I could do justice was to fly off the balcony outside the window. I photographed the da Vinci kite design at a scientific recreation of some of his plans so felt I should use it. |

It's cold and wet outside so I decided to animate this after all. http://vimeo.com/1060856129 This is v2 with the added smoke which I forgot to switch on _________________ ![]() |

It's silly season, so this one is about as silly as all the rest! Good work folks. It might be silly but it sure wasn't easy. ![]() |

Anna that's splendid. I can't make up my mind if would have liked an image to appear in the green screen at some point. Lot of 'hidden' work in there Michael. It's lovely! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

I really didn't intend to get into politics but the problem is, once an idea pops into your head, it's an itch you have to scratch! ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
Gordon, I've just been scrolling back through the entries and spotted a detail that escaped me before. In your non animated space shuttle composite the thing that makes it work so well is the smoke coming through the balustrades. I quite simply accepted it without really appreciating it ....... but it's what binds the shuttle completely into its new environment. I just love, the easily missed, details like that! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
Thanks David I spent quite some time carefully cutting out the balustrades. It was actually quite a fiddly job. It was only when I started to paint in the smoke that I realised that I didn’t need to do any of that and had been wasting my time. All that was required was to paint in the smoke over where the gaps were. 😢 As you said, the smoke coming ‘through’ the gaps is what ties it all together. _________________ Have you ever noticed that all the instruments designed to detect intelligent life are pointing away from the Earth? |

Re: Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
Another look back at earlier entries ..........
Loyd, I think I am probably being rather stupid or fanciful here but, to me, Icarus has a distinct look of a young Daniel Craig. Could this be M's latest creation? Folds up into a dinner jacket? ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks David. It took ages to re-invent and turn off that LH candelabra. I see you have simply moved it out of the picture. If I had done that I would have finished by last Monday and could have got round to doing the house work (joke). |

Re: Challenge 1042: Human powered flight
First to sprout wings this week was lwc, with a rather fine set of Big Bird impersonators. Fun movement, I like the framing – except of course the one on the left is much too high (eyelines on the horizon!). The second entry looks like an awful lot of effort for not much lift – so absolutely appropriate, then. The Icarus entry is rather beautiful, with subtle tones for real coherence. A potted history of flight from GKB, and I must admit I hadn’t heard of Otto Lilienthal - I thought George Cayley was the pioneer of powered flight? Great to see your man in action, though, despite the conspicuous lack of wind or thermals in the building. Fascinating. A terrific space shuttle entry – I especially like the way the smoke billows through the railings. Very effective. The animated Shuttle is tremendous – especially the smoke and the juddering (I like the way you’ve separated out the bannister railing for extra judder effect). And of course, the chandelier. Very fine work from DavidMac, featuring Franz Reichelt standing on the balustrade. A fine assortment of vintage people from the back – and yes, I know just how hard it is to find suitable images. Excellent. The Killah Jules entry is fun – I’m sure she’d approve! And I’m delighted to see the Hubris dart heading for the flames. If only… I see the Emperor of the Free World has been granted additional superpowers by michael sinclair – a good T replacing the stylised S on his chest. That’s some very harsh shadow on his face, though. A great interpretation of Da Vinci’s kite from Ben Boardman, complete with Leonardo himself (somewhat oversized) making notes. I like the slight translucency of the wing. A couple of aeronautical extroverts from Ant Snell, with both Branson and Musk showing their skills. You found some great bodies there! The boy sliding down the bannister is a really good addition. And do drone pilots really wear those high vis tops? An entry from tooquilos that reminds me of that scene in Mission Impossible… but is that a parachute about to open? Oh, I see – a giant fan below him. All becomes clear in the animated version, with – ha, ha, Only Fans! And the green screen effect is excellent. Where on earth did you find the video of that man? Inspired work. A largely rebuilt hall from Mariner, with new bannister railings and proper candles replacing the light bulbs. A rather glorious angel there, who looks as if she’s about to reward a battlefield hero. That must have been a tricky cutout! |

I thought that Big Bird, at more than eight feet tall, fit the "eyeline" fairly well...lol. ![]() Thanks Steve...! |

We can only hope that Musk grabs so much of the headlines and power that he bruises Trumps fragile ego enough to really make him feel threatened and pushed out of the spotlight. Trump never forgets a grudge .......... I hadn't expected this one be such fun!
