Re: Challenge 1046: Jellied eels
Jellied eels are still in high demand so Tubby sends a mobile unit three days per week...

This was a bit more difficult than I anticipated, but it turned out okay.

I was walking my dog, Rags, this morning and this great idea popped into my head. I thought that I would get stuck into it as soon as I got home and had a cup of tea and a couple of hot cross buns.

So here I am in front of the screen to find that Ant has already beaten me to it.

Looks like I'll have to take Rags out for another walk

Sorry about that, Gordon, but great minds do think alike. I had to get it in quickly as I was in the process of packing the camper to set off for the weekend. It's back to the drawing board for me, too, as I have no idea what I'm going to do for the actual entry.

Not to worry Ant; Rags enjoyed the extra walk 'cos it meant an extra biscuit

Re: Challenge 1046: Jellied eels
Lots of odd, entertaining entries so far but everyone, I suspect, struggling for quite what to do with this odd challenge.

I really like to try and respect Steve's challenges. If we ignore them what's the point? This time, however, I find myself so completely unable to come to grips with this bizarre culinary/optical combination that I have, untypically for me, simply gone my own sweet way and had fun ..............

.......... a ton of work ...........

........... but fun. it was!!

The business has changed hands and been acquired by Madam S De Vil.

I think this one is probably worth viewing full size.

Re: Challenge 1046: Another diversion - sorry Steve
Talking of eyes, real glass eyes are not spherical, they are made for insertion. They look like this.

Years ago, when I was a young man, I was given one of these by the special FX make up man on a horror movie I was shooting. Since it was a true medical prosthetic it was totally realistic.

I had it made onto a ring. Sadly it was stolen from my hotel room many years ago so I don't have a real photo that I can show but this Photoshop mockup is just how it looked.

Because it was so completely realistic it got some seriously yucky reactions!

Love that dog Loyd.
Still doesn't look appetizing Gordon.
Love your jellied eyes David, but I think I'll pass.

Fantastic entries by all this week. Particularly Mariner's. Remaking the sign is no easy task.

What a perfect portrait of Rags, Gordon. He looks gorgeous sitting there among the bluebells.

It's been quite a busy week, so no animation. However, for disclosure, I used generative fill to get rid of the people.

Nice work Anna.

Also nice work mariner which gave me the idea of putting in another "eel"!

Therefore I put my new updated entry here.

Re: Challenge 1046: Jellied eels
First to sample the jellied eels this week was Ant Snell, with an ingenious eye test chart. And it even rhymes! For those not from the UK, “Should've gone to Specsavers” is the catch line for a series of ads for this low-cost high street optician’s chain, and so is particularly apt here. I had to zoom in to see the expression on the face of the woman on the bench – and that’s a huge tub of jellied eels. A really well constructed street. Great job.

Looks like GKB's disappointment at Ant beating him to the eye chart has sparked him into swapover territory. I think on balance I’d prefer an eel examination to hot jellied eyes. The glasses-sporting eel, however, is really rather glorious, especially when seen through the window. I particularly like the treatment of the left lens. I really like how the jelly wobbles in the animated version, as it’s battered by the eel’s tail. I’m not entirely sure that’s what’s meant by jellied eels, though.

The jar of sea eel lwc's hand is holding looks… not particularly tasty. Although I have had very fine eel in sushi restaurants on occasion. Perhaps they’re just better raw? I enjoyed the ferocious eel on a leash, especially since it seems to have grown legs. The scaredy cat is splendid, and I like the subtle movement of the three dogs (cats?) in front of the left window. I’m always impressed with how you manage to find things to animate in your images – in the case of Tubby Isaacs, it’s the steam and the seagulls. A great addition.

An entertaining adaptation of the shop sign from DavidMac, although for the sake of elegance I’d have missed out the glasses’ arms – I think the joining piece does the job by itself, and would avoid the awkwardness at the bottom of the K. (Not sure what to make of the Dickfish.) A huge amount of effort has gone into the S De Vil version, with a wealth of detail: the pile of eyeballs, the pumpkin eyes, the 3D eyes on the hanging sign, the edited text – and of course the splendid carved devils adorning the sign. The only thing I’d change here is Mr De Vil’s typography – I really think he could do with something altogether more gothic. Your sideline in eye-catching jewellery is worth developing.

I like the extra signage in Frank's entry, and the expert removal of the original people from the scene. A girl that scared of eels really needs to watch where she’s walking! A fine cast, both inside and outside. Nicely done.

A sea of writhing eels from michael sinclair, with a curious pulsating effect. I do prefer the giant eel version, which is very cute with its sunglasses and cheeky grin.

Splendid new window reflections from Mariner, who has also brought the sun out. I like the new shop name, and the eaters tucking into their eel sandwiches (you do have to zoom in to see the eels). All it needs, surely, is a conga line dancing past?

A change of direction from tooquilos, who has gone large on the “evil eye”, a totem prevalent in Turkey (among other countries) that’s said to ward off evil spirits. Very nicely put together, I like the fact that it’s night time.

Great work this week.
