Although it's photographic (no fake brush stokes n'stuff) this really feels like a painting Dennis. I especially like the warm light and long shadows. Did you find an image for the background or is this a creation from several? It's very convincing as an artwork. Even the figures, although active, have a strangely posed feel completely in keeping with paintings of this type. I find this very satisfying. Lovely! I am very curious, what is the function of the plumb-line hanging just behind the architect's table? Thanks Loyd and David. It was a combination of many similar images, blended together and then sectioned into 5 parts i.e. foreground to the horizon. First layer was given clarity in camera raw. Then from 2nd layer to the horizon, a 0.2 degree blur to simulate depth. Additionally, they received an increase of approximately 0.004 exposure offset per layer, to simulate atmospheric perspective towards the horizon. I tried to find tools that were time sensitive to the period; (approximately 800 years old) and fell in love with the plumb line. I placed it in front of the table for safe keeping. You'd hate to trip over the architect's furlong line and snap it. Architects were held in the highest regard. I don't think anyone would obstruct his view and disturb the possible preparation of the extension of the castle for the building of the chapel, by the king's order. Or maybe a barrier to stop people crossing into the marshy dip on that side of his table. Possibly a force of habit of the architect wanting to center and level his drafting table true to his objective point.  _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

I have to confess, although I remember The Jam, I don't remember the song. It's a very Ant entry - they almost always have something to say. Dennis, I had no idea quite how much had gone into it. I sometimes feel, when I am doing an image, that I am putting far too much time into tiny details and sophistications. This puts me to shame for attention to visual detail. You actually put conscious thought into things I do simply by look and feel. Thank you for taking the time to prepare such a detailed explanation. It's been very educational. I've learned a number of interesting things from it. Looking back I think it's been close to thirty years you and I have exchanged on Photoshop and 3D ....... back to the very early days with Chris Dickman's graphics.com. He wrote the manuals (full books in those days) that came with Corel Draw and Corel PhotoPaint, the apps that first got me into computer graphic. It wasn't until later that I stumbled upon one of Steve's early 'How To Cheat' series in a book shop. Looking at it in the shop I found I could understand quite a lot because it was so similar in many ways to PhotoPaint which I was using. When I first came to Belgium the architect doing my loft here introduced me to Photoshop and I started to use it. I remembered Steve's book and bought it. it has been a long time and a privilege, David. I joined graphics.com. in a bid to learn digital graphics and am glad I did. I learnt a great deal from all of you. I was fortunate enough to win 2 of Steve's books in different challenges. A wealth of knowledge so thanks Steve. At the same time, I was trying out Daz Studio and Truespace, so I was stumbling over different media in chunks. You could say I made terrible decisions with regards to 3D programs as I chose Truespace, then Vue and Modo and they've all obsolete now. Vue and Modo are still very powerful packages so I continue to use them....and now ai. I use them all in my art workflow. Just have to find their sweet spot. In most of my images, I have to contain myself in case I over crowd them. With this last one, I included a sheepskin water bladder and mug. That got the imagination wondering about a lean to or tent. Then fire and caldron, blanket roll donkey and cart and horse. Being so far from the castle, would they be accompanied by the castle guard? What about mosquitoes, flies, frogs, butterflies, hare and fox, pheasants....as you can tell, it had already gone from a 4 x 3 to a 21 x 9. So I called it quits after 3 days, dropped the extras and posted it.
