Here is my attempt. I'm relatively new to "Hyper-Realism" in Photoshop, but your book has shown me a lot of tricks for "getting it right". ![]() |

That's good, Adrian, I like the bits of shell. These challenges are a really good idea Steve! Taxing and fun. Looking forward to the next one! _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Contest 1: Conclusion
Well, for a first contest that was really fantastic. Great to see so many entries, and of such a high standard. When I posed the puzzle, there were several things I was looking for. First, I wanted the background cloned in where the egg top was removed. Full marks all round, here - faultless. Second, I was looking for some thickness to the shell where it cracked open. Maiden, Ryan - spot on. And a recognition that the inside of a boiled egg has a white lining: Disco, Daz, Ryan, you all remembered. Third, I wanted convincing runniness from the yolk. So well done Russ, Maiden (Bush version), Tweaknik (nice pooling on the rim of the eggcup!) Disco (you followed the contours perfectly). Fourth, I wanted a well-removed top somewhere in the picture. Special praise here for Russ and Tweaknik. Nice idea, Adrian - but have you ever seen an egg opened piecemeal like that? Paul, take a look at the shadow from the eggcup: the lid shadow needs to match that, see Trinity's and Tweaknik's versions for a perfect fit. Finally, I was looking for humour and ingenuity. Well, I was amazed at how many ideas you could all bring to such a simple project! It started with Russ's brilliant prop-packed montage, before lurching off into the absurd with entries from Ryan (whose stunning hatching chick montage uses perfect shading and a wholly convincing egg to great effect), Maiden's second, Trinity's creative hard boiling (very nicely rebuilt eggcup there - but it's not an egg I'd be able to dip my soldiers into!). For sheer photomontage skills, three entries stand out: Russ, for a feature-packed composition; Ryan, for his perfectly shaded chick; and Daz, for a seamlessly blended montage. Can you spot where his egg begins and mine ends? That's it for this week's challenge. On to the next! Steve |

Contest 1: Boil this egg
I got this in a little late, But I thought I would literally boil this egg good. Took me quite a while because I made the fire and everything. Fire is tricky. ![]() |

Love the steam! Nice touch. The flames look like they took a long time to draw. The strong vertical lines let them down a little, though: perhaps you should try waving them with the Smudge tool to give them a more naturalistic appearance? Oh, and shouldn't all those bright flames cast a rather stronger shadow under the stones? |
