Re: Contest 27: quad bike fun
I am going to start asking for crits. If you let me have it so be it. After all I am here to learn. I look forward to Steve's comments, and I hope he does not hold back. Why? TEACH ME.
Each person has a preconcieved idea on what, when, how and how much. I have a ton of ideas, but how do you put them to work? Experience? Experiment? or help from those that are willing to help? DUH. last question wins as far as I am concerned.
So in the future LET ME HAVE IT.
Sorry to keep this going but I got in on it late.

Re: Contest 27: quad bike fun
I didn't intend to start anything, I didn't feel my comment was rude. Sorry. I would be glad to help anyone who wants help (Just PM me).
I just thought people might want to take it a little more seriously, but maybe I was wrong for doing so.

Tabatha is right, you don't necessarily have to posess the technical skill to be able to offer an opinion, you can look at th result as an image in its own right and base it from there. What matters is there is something tangible to back it up, simply saying "it's not very good" won't cut the mustard whereas "the lighting needs a little work" will.

I had a scathing exchange of emails with someone on Worth who commented on my image, who basically said the image was crap but refused to give any basis to his remarks, claiming that critics don't need to explain themselves.

I think the fact that we all wait for Steve's comments is more courtesy than coyness

Re: Contest 27: quad bike fun
The idea of commenting on each piece as it appears is a good one, as fair criticism is always useful. I've tended to wait until the end before posting my comments so as not to interrupt the flow, though; I feel that if we stop and dissect each entry as it comes in, it will make it that much harder for everyone else to post subsequent work. Additionally, the huge amount of text between each entry will make it difficult to read the contest and compare the images.

So how about this: after the end of each contest, I'll post my round-up as usual - as long as people find it useful, and not off-putting - and then the floor's open to comment. By replying to an individual post, the image will be reproduced above each comment, which should make it easier to see what we're all talking about.

Shall we try that this week, and see how it does? Unless people would prefer not to have their work criticised, which is fair enough.

Steve, that sounds like a good idea. I think it will be of great benefit.

Re: Contest 27: quad bike fun
I have benefitted from Glen's comments which I did take on board and agreed that my photo frame looked distorted and odd.

Criticism is a positive thing. When we can look upon our work and see it as others see it then we can learn to watch out for similar mistakes. I still make mistakes, sometimes those mistakes aren't immediately obvious to me and it takes other people to point them out that's why I look forward to Steve's assessments so that I can learn from those mistakes.

So it doesn't matter if someone criticises your work, as long as that criticism is well founded and more importantly well meant. If everybody loved everything we ever did we would not be struggling amateurs/semi-professionals we'd be made up for life because nothing we ever created would be wrong.

I look upon my work and see problems all the time, things that I could have done better, things that should have been included, things that look odd or prevent it looking truly realistic. But if I stopped seeing those problems then I would know for sure that I no longer cared for what I did, and as a fellow artist (for that is what we are - we create photo art) it is not negative or postivie criticism that I fear, I fear only one thing and that is apathy towards my art for when people don't have anything to say about it then I know that I have failed.

Anyhow this is a fun website, so don't be too down upon yourself and don't give in to the infernal "belly-button watching" : be free, be loose with your 'shopping, but mostly be inspired and imaginative and you will inspire others.

Becky

Re: Contest 27: quad bike fun
I did frighten the horses but I spent a lot of time chopping out the woodwork of the gate, pasting it on seperate layers and then going into each layer and transforming in one way or another. I know the scale of the bike is out by a lot too. Oh well .... good fun and I was quiet for a couple of hours which pleased everyone

Contest 27: quad bike fun
This is my first try on a friday challenge
I spent 3 or 4 hours on it. I know steve's head\helmet looks kinda fake and so do the shadows but I couldn't spend any more time on it.

Please comment....

A pastoral setting, probably somewhere in the English countryside. A perfect location for...........a dragstrip!

Re: Contest 27: quad bike fun
how in the world did u put that engine on the quad without distorting both of there perpectives

only thing that at all looks wrong to me is that the engine is a little more pixalated than the quad but its otherwise perfect

I did it through the magic of free transform. Unfortunatly, the engine pic was so small, I couldn't avoid the pixelization.

Re: Contest 27: quad bike fun
I found some things to fit, and tried a little sharpening on the engine part of my image.

Re: Contest 27: quad bike fun
Ive done things with free transform but somehow it always looks fake,
this is a reeeeely good job of it, I think. I downloaded itand reduced the size to the size of the engine to remove pixelation and the other than a drop of difference in the color saturation it looks like it was made that way.

the only problems with the shadows are in the back-right wheel there is a shadow going up the wrong direction. , but I can't really complain cause my shadow is only of the wheels.

Anyway what does everybody think of my try
