The photo...
that *they* didn't want you to see....

Well, here I go and post my first attempt at a montage. I'm a complete beginner at both photoshop and montage work and have been working my way through Steve's wonderful book. I was going to wait until later before posting, but the little fox just *had* to have a wheel in it's mouth, and what better wheel than one off a Mars rover?

Anyway, I know this won't even rate a 0/10, maybe more like -10/10, but I had fun anyway. I've got to figure out how to do shadows better, I know. Maybe I should have called it the photo *I* didn't want you to see

Hi Julie, welcome to the forum. I am a beginner as well, as far as first images go I think yours is great. There are some great people here that will teach you a lot !

Looking forward to seeing your work in future !

That's a great image Julie!

All the shadows really need is the opacity lowering a little, use the shadows that are already in the image as a benchmark.

Re: Contest 28: Fox hunting
Thanks for the welcome everyone! I'm looking forward to learning and improving my future images. I just hope there won't be too many tentacles in them....

David, thanks for the comment - unfortunately I put the shadows on the background layer instead of a separate layer so I'm not sure how I can fix the opacity without redoing the shadows. Would copying in the background image on a new layer, followed by selecting the current shadows, copying them onto new layers and then reducing the opacity work?

(I had fits with the shadow for the large fox so I'm hesitant to start all over. )

If you haven't done anything to the backround apart from the shadows, you could always load it up as another layer and start again with the shadows on a seperate layers.

Well, here's my attempt to make the floor shiny the way it's supposed to be. No amount of transforming the jump reflection seemed to work, so I did a "cop out crop out" that hopefully kinda hides it........

Re: Contest 28: Fox hunting
Another excellent round of entries - some real crackers this week. Who'd have thought a simple stuffed animal could have sparked off so much imagination?

Glen's early entry is not as simple as it might appear. For starters, where's the animal that was originally holding that pool cue? It's been artfully removed, leaving no trace behind. Great lighting, and a good twist!

What makes MJ's entry work really well is the lighting: he's captured that evening sun perfectly, and the shadows of the foxes and the tree stump complete the scene. I might have placed one of the fox's paws behind the tree, but that's just personal preference. One thing I would have liked is a slightly more fuzzy outline: this fox is a little too harsh altogether.

Great work from Tabitha, and having a dad who's a photographer is a great source of images. I would have made the foxes' heads a little larger on those bodies, trimming the necks down to fit; and the hat on the right fox could maybe be rotated a few degrees anticlockwise for a snugger fit. And Tabitha's second entry brings a good dollop of humour to the scene - even if the fox is impersonating a roadrunner…

A nice counterpoint in Atomicfog's shootout. I'd have moved the fox further away, and hidden it in some foliage more: it should be something you spot almost as an afterthought, rather than the first thing you see. He holds the pistol well, but how's he going to reach that trigger?

John-BoB's fix is leaning so perfectly on that shopping trolley he looks like he's made for it. Those trolleys are a major pain to work with: I used one last week and had to cut out each wire individually. What a hassle.

A very stylish image from tweaknik, with a fox and his bike (note the brand name!) that are clearly made for each other. The idea of what will happen when the pedal reaches the bottom of its orbit does make my eyes water, though. Stilts, perhaps?

Pictures-within-pictures: maiden does put the effort in! That beagle's reading and holding the postcard perfectly! Best image, though, has to be the second entry - what a hoot! For thse who didn't get it, the guy on the left is Michael J Fox, the woman in the middle Sam Fox. (She was a model in the 1980s in Britain who was highly regarded for her small stature and unfeasibly large breasts.) What? No Edward or James? Slightly dodgy reflection of the policewoman, otherwise it's excellent. Love the chicken!

Dead scary postcard by MJ, with an arm that's so furry it can't be real. Can it? Great poses, but the shape of that surf bothers me. Oh, and remember Photoshop now has a spell checker, MJ.

Fitting clothes to bodies is always tricky, and Jeff Scranton has managed it remarkably well. A few perspective problems here and there, but at least we had a lively debate about reflections in a different thread. Nice sense of movement!

I'd completely forgotten they used to advertise Fox's Glacier Mints with polar bears until I saw David's entry. Really great work - the motion blur on the fox, the billowing scarf, the skates, the reflection. I'd have increased the distortion of the view seen through the mint, but that's just nitpicking.

An excellent bar scene from ChrisPucci, with a selection of beasts that really do look like they're interacting with each other. I especially like the body on the fox in the off-the-shoulder number at the back - very convincing work.

Great teapot action by BobbyJo. But why is the outline of the teapot fuzzy? Surely you're not feathering your edges when you do cutouts? A fine pairing of objects, though, in a good setting.

Always good to see a new entrant here, and julie's first is a really good piece of work. The shadows and the colouring work well, although as David has pointed out, the shadows may be a little too strong. Always keep them on a separate layer! Some really great extra touches, like the tentacle coming out from under the rock in the foreground. I'd have been really tempted to replace that dull sky with something more dramatic, but then maybe that's what outer space looks like. Welcome fo the forum, julie.

Finally, a couple of great montages from occasional visitor NWrain. Did you take these photos specially? The poses of the cat and the turkey are exactly right - a really good job. The foreground fox in the first montage matches the cat perfectly. I wouldn't have used a Layer Styles shadow on the fox in the second image, though, as it makes it look a little flat. Otherwise, a top job all round.

Re: Contest 28: Fox hunting
Hiya.

No not feathering but I overdid the blur a bit as I'm not very good with the pen tool for extracting things. I have been practising hard with this over the past week on the cup that is on your CD and can do a passable job apart from the tricky tight corners around the top but that tea pot really foxed me I'll keep going with the pen until I get it mastered.

Thanks and have a great weekend.
