Anyhow I find the most common mistakes to check for are
1. Color matching problems
2. Perspective problems
3. Shadow problems or lack of shadows

So you should always try checking for that stuff.

Thank you, yes, I see those problems in all my attempts. I am just not very good at repairing it yet, but I have a blast trying. Often I know what's wrong with it, I just don't know how to do it differently. I probably use about 2% of the program.....soon I will catch up, just all of you walk backwards and see...

Re: Contest 44: a desk job
a bit quick and dirty i'm afraid:

Edit: The smooth gradients will look rather bad in 16 bit colour, best viewed in 32 bit.

A last minute entry from me as well.

Re: Contest 44: a desk job
Well, I'd never have thought a mere lump of wood would have sparked off so much enthusiasm. Some really fantastic entries this week, and the realism of many of them is stunning.

Neal started things off with a great fire-damaged desk - great charring on the edges, there. The technique used for the wormholes is generally a good one: I'm assuming you painted a little with the brush tool set to Dissolve in QuickMask, then made a new layer form the selection and bevelled it. Good detail, but I'd hate to meet one of those worms on a dark night! Prefer my woodworm a little smaller...

There's something about MJ's first entry that really appeals to me. It's very restrained, but really nicely done and thoroughly convincing. My only slight quibble is that perhaps the original brown varnish should have been a little shinier - I'd have been tempted to throw a little Plastic Wrap on that one, but then perhaps that's a filter I overuse anyway.

I really like the texture in Atomicfog's entry, and it's great to see old challenge objects like the lamp coming back to haunt us. A great sense of attic jumble!

Einstein D Kid has been taking advice - always good to see. His first entry, opening the desk lid, made the lid too thin and too short; the second added some much-needed shading, and a decent thickness to the wood. It's still too short to reach the end of the desk, though, so you're going to have to wait at least another week or so for that title of yours...

Some really fantastic shading in Glen's caged cat - a very, very convincing job. It's the details like remembering to copy a piece of wood texture around the corner for the inside that really makes all the difference here! Though perhaps the bars are just a touch too shiny.

It's great to see someone visibly improving their skills here on the forum, and BobbyJo's entry this week is as fine a piece of work as anyone could hope for. The stain, the cracks and the graffiti are beautifully done: the ink bottle leaks convincingly, the quill really looks as if it's lying on the desk. Even the perspective of the pad of paper is right, and that's a really difficult thing to do at this angle. So henceforth, BobbyJo is to be known by the title Image Imaginator.

Eventer's dislodged the lid with great panache, adding stains and shading along the way. For me, the best part is the lid corner nearest to us: that's really got a convincing, eaten-away look. It's going to take all my carpentry skills to mend this one!

I absolutely love Tweaknik's version. He says it's quick and dirty, but the perspectives are great, the lod looks real, and the whole thing appears almost touchable. Only trouble is, I make this wood stuff to get away from computers...

So that's what the legs look like! David Asch has not only elevated the desk, he's also applied a deep mahogany stain to it. But why is the back leg splaced out? Shouldn't it be following the vertical set by the angle of the back of the desk? And as for the floor...

Atomicfog's second piece gives the impression it was done in a hurry - but there's a lot of work gone into that. The cracking away of the wood veneer on the top level is particularly pleasing, and there's just enough blur for us to be able to make out the sledgehammer while being in no doubt as to its speed of movement. Really great job!

...and for those of you who were wondering, here's how I treated the real desk. A combination of ink, wormholes made with an awl, a blowtorch to bring out the grain, and frenzied attacks with a screwdriver. Didn't know woodwork could be so much fun!

Re: Contest 44: a desk job
I know, I know! It was rushed toward the end (having battled with perspective for too long) and didn't have the time to fix the back leg. The floor suffered the same fate!

Must start these sooner!

Great entries and the distressing on the real desk is superb!

Wow Steve, that takes me right back to my school days, many a VERY boring German lesson was taken up defacing wooden desks just like yours .
Just out of curiosity what do you do with all your "wooden" masterpieces?

There has been some really great works from all you guys over the last few weeks. I have really missed entering the Friday Challenges and am hoping, once my health gets a little better to join you all once again. I have alot of catching up to do and unfortunatly I do not have any perspective toys to play with as my budget will not allow me to get CS2 just yet

I keep them! That one was made to go on our washing machine. We have a real problem with junk - what Philip K Dick would call 'kipple' - and any horizontal surface gets covered in accumulated pens, socks, leaflets, junk mail... I figured the only way to prevent it happening was to build a sloping surface on the washing machine so that nothing could be left lying on top of it. The desk itself, of course, is now full of pens, socks, leaflets and junk mail!

It was tricky, wasn't it. Trouble is, the 3rd edition's now finished (as of this evening). Except for the movies, of course, and the checking, and taking all those damn annotations off the CD files...

I just had to do it, I was having the PS DT's, and the TV one just gave me too many jitters, bringing back my days as a Radio Rentals Saleswoman many moons ago!

Hi, I've sketched in some lines where I expect the hidden edges would have been in the open box.
