Thanks for the encouragement Stefan.....a very expensive looking iPod from you I must say......great looking in gold!... and I agree with you... the standard just gets better and better each week, so many different ideas... it's amazing! Maiden's entry is fantastic... she managed to get some detailing in hers that I didn't quite manage in mine... but the same goes for a lot of the entries.... when you look through them you sit there wondering how on earth they did some of that stuff lol |

Re: Contest 87: iPod faking
Who'd have thought there could be so many possible designs for a video iPod? A wealth of ideas, some more plausible than others. Born2Run got in first, with an interesting T-shaped design - and a homage to the TV ad that launched the Apple Macintosh back in 1984. Hmm... they'd have some difficulty making a leather case for that one! A great tablet in the second entry - but, even though Macs are now being fitted with Intel chips, are you sure Steve Jobs would opt for an entire Windows interface? Best of luck with the cruise job, Chris - and do try to drop in to the forum on your travels! A fantastically realistic image from maiden, with a beautiful design and thoroughly convincing modelling. I'm always intrigued by how much can be achieved directly in PS, with no 3D apps involved, and this is a great example of what's possible. As ever, it's the detailing that really makes the difference: the subtle shading on the speaker as it wraps around the curve, the playlist menu, the disk icons, the power button, and even the USB and headphone sockets round the side - fantastic. Great work, Becky, and a cool new avatar. When you start with a fantastic image, it's hard not to end up with a great result, as mr.pbody has shown us. That said, the added elements blend in really well with the original: great lighting on those headphones, and the iPod tucks into the strap perfectly; the curvature of the cables is just right (and that's a hard thing to achieve). Of course, the brief was for a video iPod in a realistic setting, but hey, who's complaining? There's a reversion to an earlier iPod design from uk2usadaz, but it's a cool idea: an iPod with a movie screen on the back. A great ad mockup, too - although I wasn't sure about that zigzag bouncing line in the reflection. And wouldn't they advertise a video iPod with, you know, a video? rather than a still image? Just a thought. A monumental piece of work from stefan, which looks as if it's been carved out of stone - or, perhaps, designed in a 3D application? The personalization feature is a great touch, although making a new mould for each customer would prove expensive. And, I take it, this model's fully waterproof? A great approach from raffy, with a cunningly designed catpod. I'd really recommend using the Smudge tool on that fur, though - it would really help to make the cat look more part of the scene. And that's one mean moggy on the screen! A great spy camera shot from Dek_101 - the distortion lines, the video captions, all work together perfectly. Great to see the original image, too, as it shows off the huge amount of detail in there: the poster, the Bill Gates dartboard, the Apple Lisa on the desk, and especially the clock - for those of you who don't use Macs, that clock is part of the new Dashboard pop-up widget thing in the latest system release. And I see I'm finally an Apple employee! Woo! A steady job at last! Always good to see entries from new members, and peter edwards has given us a great piece of work - I love the idea of using retro technology in the machine. The mangled VHS tape is a brilliant addition! As ever, placing foreground elements in front of the machine makes all the difference here. My only quibble is about the colour of the iPod itself: that strong blue stands out, but maybe too much. I'd tone it down a lot, to make it look more part of the surroundings. But fantastic first entry, Peter - welcome to the forum! A great pair of images from Paul 2005. The badge on the guy's lapel is perfectly rendered, although I'd like to have seen a little more shading on the iPod in his pocket - perhaps tucking it behind the lapel would have worked well here, too. Best of all is the second image, which combines a great idea with a fantastic video treatment. Love that huge band of distortion through the middle! Great work! As a diehard Star Trek fan, I was most pleased to see jwhite's holodeck version of the system. A good idea, but there's a perspective issue: surely the horizon in the image should line up with the vanishing point as defined by the grid? It's close, but the angles look awkward. And shouldn't we have Commander Riker in there, trying to seduce yet another alien floozy? The picture-in-picture idea is a great one, and Eggbox has given us a good piece of design - the ghosted background works well on that screen ratio. The font and scroll bars, though, look more Windoze than Apple. But all is saved by the fantastic second image, a stunning piece of work - great detailing, especially the blue security dye! So whose window did you have to smash to take that one? Excellent! The pile of dead computer equipment in Pierre's entry is really well achieved - great stacking of PCs, great shading. Not sure about the iPod itself, though: that magenta side really glares out at me. And it appears to be in black and white! Only for watching old movies, then? As for the second entry - well, I was really hoping someone would come up with this idea, but I didn't expect it as good as this. The scatches on the surface, the marker pen over the original title, the faded play bar on the screen, all superb details. I really like this one! And, I think, a title well deserved here. Hmm... an industrial designer, eh? Let's boost you to Constructional Confabulator from now on. A truly stunning entry from DaltonX - again, showing how much realism can be achieved directly in Photoshop. This one's got it all: a convincing hardware design, on-screen display and icons that really look the part, and all perfectly held in the hand. Even the shadows, both on the hand and on the iPod, are perfect; the red light top left is entirely convincing, as are the switches round the side. This the only recording video iPod entered, and it looks great! Fantastic job, Dalton - thanks for reposting it. Inspirational. I love the way yuvalbra's hologram breaks out of the bounding box of the photo - this is a great way to enhance the 3D effect. Shame it can only power such a tiny hologram! Lime green, though - not a standard Apple colour, I'd have thought. How on earth would you find shoes to match that? Not just a brilliant idea, but a great piece of work from jimt. The iGod! Ha ha! Excellent! and great shading on that hand, too - with a pose reminiscent of the Sistine Chapel. Wonderful. And well deserving of a title for you, Jim. Hmm - no personal details filled in, so I don't know anything about you. but on the basis of this image alone, Celestial Composer seems to fit the bill! Well, this is one way of achieving a wide screen effect - a great shot from Atomicfog, and perhaps the silliest idea of the week. Mind you, if they made one, I'd buy it! Great job, although I'm intrigued to know how those screens would fold up. Bob has given us a great realistic view, with good shadows and an almost perfect perspective. One thing would really have helped here: because the top of the pad is out of focus, blurring the iPod would have blended it in with the image in a far more convincing way. To blur just at the bottom of the image, use a gradient in QuickMask to create a faded selection, then the blur will only apply where you want it. A great composition, though! I think Jonathan Ive is safe in his job. |

Whose window did I smash? It's more than my Jobbs worth to tell you. The blue security dye was my attempt at broken glass but it sounds so much better. Thanks again Steve for your encouragement. Ted |

Re: Contest 87: iPod faking
Thanks for the comments Steve. I have to admit..it was made in Cinema 4D. I've only had it for a short while, so I'm still pretty crap at modeling and texturing. ( but I'm working on it....;-)..) It was quite a headache so after I finished what vaguely looked like an Ipod, I was a bit lost for a suitable environment and didn't feel like spending more time looking for one I should have let it lie and come back to it the next day but there you go.... |

Wow! Constructional Confabulator! I love that! Thanks a lot Steve! And yes, you're rigth again about the iPod in the Pile, I realized after the fact that it was too "flashy". I think I will wait a couple of days to let the images rest before posting them. I did that for the Etch-a-Sketch, and I did some adjustments after re-looking at that and it paid off! c ya next week! Re: Contest 87: iPod faking
I'm glad you noticed the hand pose, Steve. It took me a while to get that just right (it still wasn't exactly what I wanted). It's not very easy to compose a shot of your own hand with a 50mm lens and no true way to make sure your focus is dead on. And with the low light (pretty much just a small lamp over to my right to simulate the sun), I had to take a longer exposure, so trying to hold my hand in the position of the famous "hand of God" pose proved to be tough! Thanks for encouraging words! |
