I'm not old and I get it. "The Day The Earth Stood Still" is a favorite of mine. I have it on DVD

I was having lunch in Sydney yesterday, and as I was looking at the skyline, There was the mothership, and looking around several Dylaks wanting to go home.

I figured what better place for a Dalek to hide than the local hardware store. What with all the machinery and all, they would scarcely be noticed.

Re: Contest 93: Exterminate! Exterminate!
First entry this week came from mguyer, who hasn't exactly hidden the Dalek - more like it's been elevated to the priesthood in some funky modern church. I like the light beams and sparkles, though, and it's good that we can finally see what the monsters inside the shells look like. Gruesome!

A really fantastic first entry from fitzpas, done with great skill and subtlety. The Dalek is neatly tucked away within the group photo, but look at the little details: the tie around its neck, and the playful way it's pushing the head of the girl in the row in front. This is a great job - welcome to the forum!

A deceptively tricky image from Slim, which looks more straightforward than it actually is. All trace of the person in the middle has been removed, and the Dalek is perfectly blended into that water spray. The angle of the body matches that of the other skiers, and the arm is in a direct line with the rope that's pulling it - a very neat detail. Excellent work, Slim! Now if only you'd got the shading on the other side...

A good idea from michael sinclair - hiding the Dalek among a lot of other fantasy objects. I like the red bumps on the body, but you seem to have had some trouble with the cutout. Magic Wand on too low a tolerance? I'd recommend 32 for this job. Or did you, perhaps, start with the low res rather the high res version?

Loads of humour in vibeke's entry, with three Daleks very neatly hidden in the foliage (great detailing, there) and a cunning cross between a red phone box and a blue police box. The figure of Tom Baker - always my favourite Dr Who - perches neatly on the top, too. But that old beast, perspective, has got in the way again. The perspective of the scene is shown by the angles of the phone box: they'll point to the horizon. Your Daleks are getting bigger as they recede into the distance! Good colour coding in the second entry , and I like the new angles on the extensions.

A good custom spray job from Dek_101 with fantastic colouring, and added wing mirrors, vents and a headlight. For those who don't recognise the style, this is a parody of the Mini advertisements here in the UK. The checkerboard effect on the dome is especially well drawn - that must have been tricky!

Another new member this week: Ben has given us a set of Daleks being literally bowled over. A good sense of motion on the ball, and I like the way the Daleks are being knocked about. Bit of a problem with perspective here: the floor's at a slightly awkward angle, and the row of four Daleks at the back would look a lot more convincing if each one was slightly smaller than the one to the left of it. But there's a lot of energy here - welcome to the forum to you too, Ben!

Pierre has given us a great insight into the Dalek's home life - surrounded by plasma screens beaming past episodes at him. Good to see someone's finally given that dull case a polish. But what's the chair for? Now if you'd made the Dalek sit down, that really would have been impressive! Great lighting in the second entry - and is that Robbie the Robot peering over the horizon?

A truly beautiful entry from stefan, whose Daleks in luuurve have a very etheral quality. The faded phone box fits perfectly, and the added shading on the Daleks places them well into the scene. Perfect placement of grass over the bases, good long shadows - and those buildings in the background are quite magical. Did you draw them? What's your technique?

Plenty of great texture, as we've come to expect from Tom. Some very intriguing shapes and lighting here, and the rippled reflections - both of the Dalek and the background - give this one a consistent feel. You must do us a tutorial on your chrome effect some time!

I really liked Paul 2005's excellent entry, with the Dalek nestling in amongst the bandsmen. The cap badge is a neat touch - but shouldn't it be playing an instrument? Or, at the very least, have shiny brass extensions? Aha - just noticed your second entry. Excellent improvements!

Seems that once raffy has got the animation bug, nothing will stop her. Lots of good cats here, and I especially like the cat in the sun. But why is the Dalek so distorted? and I can't quite make out what's being animated there, it happens too fast!

Very neat texturing and camouflage from DaltonX. Some really neat detail - like the tusks in the elephant version! Not sure the zebra stripes are quite 3D enough, though, especially around the top of the Dalek - and shouldn't the giraffe version have a longer neck?

An extremely well camouflaged Dalek from Rs - the hat is really cute, and the newspaper is a neat edition. But why is the paper folded down the middle like that? It seems a little to straight-edged, to me. A bit of curl on there would really have helped!

Two Daleks very neatly slotted into racing cars in Whaler's first image - but it's the second entry that really does it for me. The way the shadow fits in, especially, is almost perfect - and the rear lighting has been really well achieved. But has neither of those policement noticed that it's carrying an offensive weapon?

And I thought it was only politicians who had to kiss babies! But jwhite has found another instance. A great hat for the old Pope, and I especially like the multicoloured baubles. Not quite sure of the political message here, though - Excommunicate! Excommunicate! Good to see an old friend popping up in the second entry there. Shadows a little harsh, though, wouldn't you say?

Hilarious work from Neal - plenty of cogs and springs bursting out of that falling Dalek, and I especially like the wind-up key. The hint of a view inside the body is really effective, and the faded duplication of the body is a good alternative to motion blur in this case.

A really funny entry, too, from Pete, with a perfectly tucked-away Dalek nestling in amongst the technology. The signs on its body, and the reflection of the sign are excellent - although the lower sign does seem to be missing from the reflected version. Nice work!

If I'd been asked to blend a Dalek with a Coke bottle, I'd probably have said it was impossible. But DaltonX has done it perfectly - complete with bobbles (damn, what are those things really called?), Coke-style lettering, and a great merger of the head into the cap. The ice and puddles are excellent additions. Wonderful work!

Nicely chromed Daleks in Bob's entry - I especially like the Dalek that's hidden in the background. A small problem with the perspective on the front Dalek, though; it's tricky to get this sort of thing right, especially given the multiple angles in the skirt. The only real way to do this is to break it into individual panels, and reassemble the whole thing the other way up.

Fantastic work from everyone this week!

Hi,Steve!Glad you like Raffy in he sun.I'm not sure why it's distorted-Probably when I put it and Raffy together to paste them into the solar scene,I adjusted Raffy a bit,and must have changed its perspective, too.Ooops!
That's Dr.Who #8(7?)(Not sure now)being sucked into the Dalek/Hoover.I tried it slower, but to me,it didn't look quite right.Vacuums, unless the bag is full ,suck stuff up faster than that.
Should have made the Dr. bigger.
(Of course,I could have said that all was being affected by a near-by black hole-hmmm,that's an idea!)

Steve,
Thanks very much for your kind words. The buildings were made out of the Dalek you provided. I took a Dalek and "squeezed" it with the transform tool so it became long and thin, copied it a few times, stichted them together, copied a piece of it and transformed it into perspective to make a side and then just cut pieces out to give it an interesting shape. I just played around with it really until it looked kind of interesting. Lost a bit of sharpness along the way and then forgot to sharpen in the end but I guess that's not that bad.

To make them fit I used color overlay(in layer styles) with a color sampled from the clouds and then opacity reduced to about 20 if I remember rightly. Then a bit of tweaking with curves and adding a bit of fog here and there till it looked ok to me.

Have a nice weekend.

Thanks for your comments Steve. For my own piece of mind I'm going to have to correct that reflection before I can move on to the next challenge.

Thanks for the remarks, Steve.
I used your curves setting on the Dalek thing.

The background was a b/w gradient in difference mode.
Duplicated the layer changed to overlay. Merged.
Applied a motion blur.
Restored part with the history brush.
I think that was about it.

Thank you very much for the kind words Steve, and for not suggesting that I'd chickened out by going for a black and white picture. Which I had!

I hope to contribute regularly to the challenges, and I'll be using them to try out tutorials from t'book.
