Stay cool...but watch out for frost bites! Believe me, I know about winter! Don't believe what they say about the Alaskan Summer... Alaska is Alaska. Keep your umbrella with you. PS: it IS a joke...they do have a really nice summer there... PPS: I now realize that there is not much snow on our friend here... may have the time to fix this... _________________ |

Re: Contest 96: Born2Cruise
Plenty of good entries this week - let's hope Chris can log in from his ship to check them all out (now that's what I call a wireless network!) A great movie poster from Dave, with a moody scene showing Chris cleaning up during a game. Hmm... Chris seems to have put on a bit of weight here, and has got himself a new haircut. In fact, he looks like a mid-period Stephen Fry, which is a little bizarre. Great lettering! A fantastic first entry from salfordnurse, who has used plenty of tricks here: the soft blending of the face into the coat, the red cheeks and blue lips - and the inclusion of the translucent croupier's eye shield is an excellent touch. Great image, Simon - welcome to the forum! A real bunch of misfits in Born2Run's own post, with plenty of forum regulars - including the new black Eggbox. One of these days, we're going to have to see what Marty looks like without that beard, though. I can feel another Friday Challenge coming on... Good colour matching, and really well replicated facial shading from ben - and that lettering has been perfectly reproduced. Good work, and a good reference. I was afraid someone might do the Cruising joke, and should have expected it would be Glen who got in there first. But what a fantastic image! Absolutely seamless. I won't even ask how you managed to lay your hands on this picture so quickly. A good gag from raffy, whose man-eating catfish is bearing down on that little ol' sub. To make this one work best, though, it would have been worth taking some of that sun's ray background and bringing it in front of the sub, perhaps at a low opacity or maybe Hard Light mode: this would really have blended it into the scene well. Another good idea from mr.pbody, with a seamless montage - Chris slots in there perfectly. But who on earth are all those people? Should we recognise them? i really liked the second entry - fantastic lighting effect on the head, and good fading. But then as a Star Trek fan, I would like this one! Welcome, also, to Prfxshn, another first poster on the forum. Plenty of bizarre wildlife in there, and elements such as the hats on the duck and cat have been very well achieved. But to my eye, that manufactured background rather lets it down: it screams for attention, but does little except distract from the main image. When in doubt, use clouds! A very cute second entry too - especially the wooden leg on the cat! A fantastic job from vibeke this week - and thanks for showing us all the constituent parts. A lot of skill has gone into this, from rebuilding Halle Berry's dress to twisting that arm so it runs over Chris' shoulder. Great work, Vibeke, looks like you really enjoyed this one! A couple of very tasty images from Paul2005, with a well executed brochure image and a really funny 'reality' shot. Adding the shadow of the penguin to the frozen ship was a great idea here - good work all round on this one. Eggbox has made what should have been a routine image much harder for himself, by adding a mirror in the background. It works perfectly: the pose, the lighting and the scene are exactly right. Excellent! Three good entries from Michael Sinclair, the first with a great bear creeping up on the unknowing Chris; the second entry shows the shop missing its croupier; and a great punchline in the third. The fourth, however, was so disgusting I had to remove it for reasons of taste. Oh, and for future reference, Michael, we like to limit entries to two per challenge - one initial attempt, and another version to respond to any reader suggestions. Something very weird going on in Tom's post: the cards are flying through the air towards the casino, while Chris appears to have been steamrollered on the road. I assume the cards are supposed to be upside down - because we're looking at them from below? It's a good idea, but I'm not sure the conceit works at first glance. A good piratical scene from jwhite, with Chris' head blended nicely into that swashbuckling body. The background, though, is much lower contrast than the figure; boosting this would have helped a lot. In these circumstances I use the technique of duplicating the layer, desaturating, and then setting the mode to Hard Light in order to strengthen the overall scene. Not sure about the treatment of the face in the second entry though! Wonderful rippling from Neal, whose frozen ice block is a perfect match for its surroundings. Especially convincing refraction, which enables us to see Chris through the side and top of the ice block as well: very nicely observed. A good gag from Whaler, translating a Caribbean cruise to the Arctic. Sadly, my knowledge of Norwegian isn't up to checking all the text! Great hand drawn effects in the second entry - and is that really the only croupier picture Google could find??? Another great hand drawing, this time from Pauline. A good fan of cards there, with a fine sense of movement. Not sure if posterizing was the right choice of effect for Chris' head, though; there are many ways of achieving a hand drawn effect on an image, and a lot of them have been discussed elsewhere on this forum. "Shuffling off to Alaska"! Good joke, Raffy. A truly beautiful image from Pierre, with a sense of texture that really brings it alive. The addition of the woolly hat, as well as the rosy cheeks, misted glasses and frosty nose, are excellent. And a fantastic snowfall, too! Another new contender this week: Dannithegirl has given Chris a sex change, which frankly makes him look rather better. The face seems a little small, here, though. When matching faces to heads shot at a different angle, you don't need to follow the lines of the original hair; it would have been possible to give the impression the entire head was facing towards us, by bending the hair slightly differently around the face. Excellent colour matching, though - although I really think he needs to lose that beard! Welcome to the forum, Danni. Plenty going on in char's fun-packed entry - almost Christmassy in its exuberance. There's lots of stuff here, we could really do with seeing a larger version. Looks like a great piece of work! A good idea from Rs, with a fair stab at the shading on the side of the head. It's very, very hard to get this sort of shading right! The face is still a little too blue, compared to the yellow of the neck and hands; and wouldn't some eye contact help here? I do like that method of doing bubble captions, though - and a great gag, too. |

Gracías for his(its) commentary Steve. If, the close time I will order it a bit bigger, I was wrong with the resolution, this way the details cannot be seen well. The snow I like much, because of it I pass drawing her(it), je. Ah, grace(thanks) does my name traducído to the Englishman, is as that I work per hours or coal of fire. My name in Spanish is like Rose, jeje, I will have to change it. A greeting. |

Re: Contest 96: Born2Cruise
It bothered me when I saw other entries using the same croupier I had downloaded from a Google search. There were many other images of croupiers but they were all low resolution and wouldn't work well. Lack of time prevented me from finding another image this time. And yes, as Vibeke pointed out, the text is correct, I copied that from a travel agency's home page. _________________ Only in my brightest moments I understand myself |
