Is that white flag waving or a locker room towel snap duel

Thanks, Pierre. Happy 200th to you.

Rugby would be acceptable if they could somehow include killing and gutting a deer or two during a match.

My favorite sport is 'darts' where guys and gals who've had too much to drink throw tiny, sharp projectiles at a board and hope not to hit anything but that!

This week I have not had time to make my challenge, but this last entrance has since to think to me. According to the prophecies of NostraDamus in the 2006 it would gain the world-wide one of fúlbol ARGENTINA, the t-shirt that takes Jesus in the entrance of Youyong, is not of Argentina. This is very rare .....!

Re: Contest 101: World Cup fever
Lots of shiny gold this week - tricky stuff, to be sure. Remember, gold needs shading as well as reflection!

First onto the pitch was Dave, with a great take on the 1966 World Cup. An excellent job: that cat's at just the right angle. The caption's a perfect match to the expression on Bobby Charlton, too (he's the chap on the far right). Excellent!

An ambitions animation from raffy, with a good stone rendering on the cat's head. The two flags are rather flat, though: some shading would help, and the lower one should certainly wrap around that tortoise. Love the spinning ball, so much that I'm not even going to mention that the shading should stay at the bottom. Oh, damn, it slipped out.

A beautiful trophy from Pierre, with great shading on both the ball and its stand. The only thing that bothers me here slightly is the lettering: I'd have rounded off the corners to make it look more cast in metal. And what's this - no Mini this week? Are you feeling OK?

A fine sculpture from mguyer, adapting a Henry Moore to footballing purposes. The attitude of the players around it is great - but they'd have a hell of a job knocking back champagne out of this monster! Interesting second entry - I think you'll agree, Marty, the ball isn't quite a match to the rest of the trophy! Third entry is closer - but why is it still orange?

Ah, Plastic Wrap - my favourite! And Michael Sinclair seems to agree. A slightly dodgy cutout, though, with too many ragged edges for my liking; worth smoothing that off, I'd have thought. Er - what's happening to his foot? And don't forget to add some directional shading as well as the Plastic Wrap!

A great piece of work from Deborah Morley, with a fine modern sculpture as seen on TV. I like the curtain background (you do like Fibers, don't you!) and the shadow of the trophy, but the best thing for me is the reflection of the viewer in the screen. It's touches like this that make all the difference: this really places glass on the screen. Well done!

Typically beautiful work from Glen, with great stonework on the head, a perfect dome, and a great plinth. The lettering is perhaps a little off balance: when you're creating text that wraps around a cylinder, remember it needs to be flatter at the sides as it wraps around in perspective. And crikey! Those eyes!!!

"didn't quite achive what I had hoped for, but learnt a few things" says Vibeke. Well, that's exactly what the Challenges are for! The day any of us does a job we're perfectly satisfied with, it's probably time to hang up our pixels and turn to gardening. The technique used here was a good one; the problem is that it's just too detailed. Blurring the footballer first would have helped, reducing the detail while keeping the contours. And I'd be tempted to keep the shading from the original, perhaps overlaying a copy on top in Multiply mode. Worth a try!

I really like the surrealism of eyal fitoussi's entry. Some beautifully arranged object inside this constructed room - a great sense of perspective there. Great touches, too, like the mouse that's eaten its waqy through the painting on the left. And is this room 101? Do we see only half the number? A very fine trophy, too, but perhaps a little too acid yellow: I'd really be tempted to warm it up a little! I like the second entry!

I'm not sure whether the flatness of the footballer in jwhite's entry is intentional or not - so we'll assume it is. An interesting metal effect that's slightly at odds with the base! Intrigued, though, to know how the globe/football's suspended in mid air like that. Oh, and shouldn't the lettering curve the other way, to follow the angle of the base?

An absolutely stunning entry from hi-liter - how was this done? I'd be most intrigued to see your working on this one, and to know how much of it was drawn, how much modelled and how much found objects. A great arrangement, too!

A great final gag from youyong, proving once and for all that (a) the holy grail really does exist, and (b) Dan Brown is grossly over paid. The subtlety of the main image is neatly set off by the 'x-ray' inset version, and the choice of font gives the text a newsworthy immediacy. Great job, youyong - and welcome to the forum!

LOL!

Steve, thank you for the tremendous compliment! Wow...

Honestly, this was pretty straight-forward, the soccer sphere and the 'burnished titanium' goals, the most challenging (lighting). All the elements (5) were found on google (lots of looking)... and fortunately the three glass elements had black or gray backgrounds, which helped tremendously. I think I should be able to draw these things... but can't, my sister got all those genes, so have to 'see' it and then look for the elements to make it...

Steve, I agree with eyal's thoughts in that grounding the object with reflection and shadows is one of those things I picked up from the book and one of the reasons I bought it in the first place... help with the detail things, such as shadow and lighting.
