Re: Contest 129: Eggbox's sofa
I hope Eggbox has been following this week's Challenge - there are certainly plenty of good renovation ideas here. All we need to do next is persuade him to implement the best design... Dirtdoctor23 was first out of the upholstery basket, with a brand new suite (and some excellent perspective matching there). I particularly like the new lamp base, and the way the skirting board and wall corner have been recreated behind it. Very neat work. A more radical approach from j.harvatt, who's given us a 70s throwback in some style. Love the lava lamp! The pictures on the walls, though, could do with a slight shadow to make them more 3D, don’t you think? Interesting animation from james, whose flashing light changes the whole wall - although it doesn't seem to be making much difference to the shadows, James. I like the way the cushion has been plumped up, and that dayglo fabric will certainly be a great help in early morning traffic. A stunning piece of animation from maiden, which really shows how timing is everything in these cases. The blinking is excellent: note how the wrinkles and folds in the cushions move as the eyes close, as do the lashes. The wink takes us by surprise, and then the lip pout is a great finale. Classy work! Good to have you back here, Becky! And particularly good to see it inspire a second entry from james - now that's praise indeed. Well, mguyer certainly likes his fabrics saturated, doesn't he. I think ten minutes with that carpet would have me screaming for mercy. Still, the lavishly framed portrait of mr and mrsguyer is a nice touch. The shadow helps the picture, but are you sure it should be underneath? That's where the light is coming from! A cheap replacement option from Neal - he'll have you shelling out for that lens in no time, Ted. The pale patch on the wall and carpet where the sofa's been removed is really cute, and the man's shadow is excellent. Although, perhaps, it doesn't match the light source? Well, Ben Mills may have opted to leave the sofa alone, but he's jazzed up the rest of the room for us. A touch more shadow on the carpet, and particularly to the right of the sofa, would have helped greatly here! I like the inclusion of Ted's portrait on the wall (although I would question the perspective). Funky wallpaper! The egg metaphor has clearly got Dek_101 thinking - wallpaper, fabric and curtains liberally strewn with the ovoid objects. Of course, to do the fried eggs justice they should really have wrapped around the planes of the sofa, which would have meant splitting them into numerous sections. A very tasty second entry, with a great atmosphere in the room. I agree with mguyer's reworked version, although think perhaps the giant killer cat is a step too far. Isn't that just typical of decorators. dave.cox repaints the room and replaces the carpet and curtains, then forgets where he stored the sofas. Great shading on the wall and curtain, Dave, that works really well with the light source. Char's had a busy week - first teasing us with the coolest 'under construction' scene I've ever seen, then whipping back the curtains to reveal the full scene. And what a stunning job it is: a rock star's dream, with Ted standing in for Johnny Cash and popping up with the Stones. And, yes, there's his new camera lens on the table as well. So much excellent detail: the zip(per)s on the sofas, the British newspapers, the reflections in the table top... absolutely wonderful. Char, you have a rare talent! A cinematic sequence from michael sinclair, who first gives us a well-realised view of Ted gazing out of his window (it's the reflection that really makes this, of course). Ted's expression changes to a smile as he sees a retro extravaganza in the street outside; so he dumps his old sofa, and installs his new-found treasure. Good to see he's saved enough to invest in CS3! But why the cockroaches? Well, Steve Mac may have failed to recover the sofa, but he's certainly managed to downgrade the entire room. All the new props fit perfectly within their space, with excellent perspective and shading; the cracks on the wall are beautifully drawn, and the addition of the egg from the first ever Friday Challenge is a very neat touch. This is faultless work, Steve - congratulations, it's an excellent job. And one which certainly earns you a title. I think that, for this week's entry, it really has to be Grunge Genie! I don't know what BigVern's been taking, but I don't think you can get it over the counter. Here's a deep exploration into his psyche, with a clutch of egg cartons spraying decoration into the room. The brushes and spray work really well, and the pencil drawing effect makes a great base. Surreal indeed! So, Ted, which is it to be? Looking forward to seeing the photographs of the real thing... |

Correct me if I amwrong: I placed the shadow for the picture to match the shadow under the front of the couch. |

"Why the cockroaches?" I was trying to make an alago...alligo...allagory...I was making a moral out of my pics: don't use other people's rubbish: there was a good reason why the neighbours threw out that sofa--apart from being in bad taste--it had an infestation of roaches when they bought it had a car boot sale (scuse the pun), so when they discovered it had "guests" they discreetly tipped it without mentioning why. Indeed you did, Marty. But the couch is below the lamp: the picture is above it! |

Thank you all for your design ideas. Nicole and I will carefully sift throough and weigh each concept and decide. Meanwhile with further research I have discovered I can get everything I want by availing myself of months worth of zero percent credit particularly from a credit card aptly named Egg!! It has been a lot of fun. Thanks. Ted |
