No photographs were harmed during the making of this weeks entry ... strictly pixel power and strictly photoshop .... if you're wondering where the music fits in? ... the 'slot' accepts 8 track! |

Re: Contest 131: I want an iPhone
There's been some hugely imaginative work on display this week, as well as some very crafty pixel-pushing. First up was GKB, with a dazzling display of period kitsch. Not only do we have a record player, phone, camera, TV and radio all incorporated within a single box, the fake advertisement is also awash with period detail: the typography, the model with her outsize iPod headphones, even down to Andy Pandy on the TV screen. And, of course, beneath the iBox logo: "holds up to seven songs". Brilliant, Gordon, a real classic! Ben has gone for the all white household appliance look, with shelves offering support for a phone, tickertape machine (cute touch!) and a safe, with a built-in TV screen. All mounted on Segway-style wheels, too - very tasty! And the Windows 52 gag rounds it off nicely. Good work, Ben. An interesting piece of animation from Michael Sinclair this week, who seems to have gone a little off-topic. Er... very pretty, Michael, but is it perhaps in the wrong section? Dave.cox has given us all the components, and they're just waiting to be assembled. I do really like the briefcase phone in here! There is rather an issue with the perspectives, though. The briefcase is propped up at too high an angle, and we're looking at the table from rather to high up. A valiant stab at the shadows, but the most obvious one cast by that light would be under the table itself, surely? An extremely neat solution from Neal, with all the components built into a 1950s radio. I especially like the earpiece hanging on the side, and the embossed Apple and iPhone logos look really convincing. Perfect perspective views, as we'd expect from Neal; shouldn't the earpiece cable be more cloth-like, though? And do watch what happens to the bevel and emboss where it disappears behind the earpiece! Eggbox has given us a perfect period setting for his homemade contraption - complete with outsize batteries and a dude so cool he's almost frozen. I get the impression, though, that the background picture was chosen after the machine was built, which could explain the rather mismatched perspective between the two. A shame, because the device itself looks well assembled - and the reel-to-reel tape player is a very good addition. A very wistful, evocative scene from Steve Mac, with an expression on the girl's face that's a real delight. She has all the components in her shopping cart - all that's required now is some strapping lad to put it all together for her. A very novel approach! Always good to welcome a new member, and BrandOh! has begun with a great-looking image. The jukebox is accessorized with a tiny phone on the side, and a TV built into the front - and is clearly the envy of the teen gang behind. A great first entry, BrandOh! - welcome to the forum! My favourite time traveller pops up in Ben Mills entry, with Tom Baker looking as manic as ever - clutching his iPhone, but as Ben so rightly points out, there's no signal back in 1957. A touch more smudging on the hair, Ben, and I'd have been happy! The feature I like best about Dirtdoctor23's entry is the small info screen, which seems to combine the essence of iPod displays with a real 1960s feel. The bevel around the TV, the shape of the speakers, all well observed period features. A good selection of components, and the guy with the earphones is priceless! A far more contemporary iPhone from maiden, who has admitted that she misread the instructions. Seems you also missed the unveiling of the real iPhone, Becky! But the mockup here is really classy, with great shading on the surface. I particularly like the ring of phone buttons - what a great idea! And the ears are cute, whatever they are. Buttons? Speakers? Careful with your perspective, though: I don't think we should be able to see the bottom of the unit from this angle. A truly beautiful mix of the old and the new from char, with a sparkly, bling version of a portable jukebox. You absolutely have to check out the Flash version to see its full glory: try pressing the buttons to see what happens. Wonderful, Charo! This is fantastic! Video conferencing meets the radio age in mguyer's entry, with a miniaturized phone and an oversized camera. Are anyone's fingers tiny enough to turn that dial? I'd certainly hate to be under that thing when it crashed... glad to see it turned on in the second entry! Now, who's that handsome fellow on the left? A really gorgeous entry from j.harvatt this week, with a truly archaic music player beautifully incorporated in a case that includes a phone, diary and address drawer. Apart from the excellent texture and sense of uniformity, it's the additional gags that really make this one work: the munched apple, the mouse, the ram, and the little container to hold the chalk. And the chalk writing, of course, which has been so well drawn here. This is great work, Jo, and it certainly earns you your title. So... shall we say Gag Gadgeteer in honour of this week's entry? A magnificent assembly from Pierre, who's built so many accesories into his mini I'm sure it contravenes all kinds of health and safety regulations. Some very fine touches, such as the bag of pencils, the 1959 calendar with every Friday ringed... can't quite make out the book on the floor, whould we be able to recognise it? Very consistent work here, and totally plausible! An animated assembly from james, whose components attach themselves to the case, appear in a businessman's hand and then pop up in front of, er, Buckingham Palace. Surely you could get arrested lingering there with such an obviously lethal device? A lovingly hand drawn entry from Dek_101, which goes to show how much can be achieved without resorting to a camera. The Fibers filter has created a good wood texture, and the shading on the diary and phone are beautiful: but look at the skill of the handle on top, and the brass rings to the speaker and lights. I love seeing what can be created using Photoshop alone! It's Spot-the-childhood-Vibeke time: my guess is that's you right in the middle. The iPod has acquired a period-appropriate receiver and dial: but surely, adding a sepia tint to this would have made all the difference? An odd photo, though, taken from the wrong side of a table, with someone right in the foreground looking the other way. If only they'd had Photoshop in those days! Excellent, everyone. |

Thank you Steve and congratulations Gag Gadgeteer. My only complaint this week is that I can only see a still image of Char's entry. I don't seem to have access to the Flash file for some reason. |
