Haven't participated for a long time and here's my go. It needs a little something else to stand out, but I know that I'm not going to get the time before Friday. P.s. some of the entries have been first class. ![]() |

Well I don't know why my entry was deleted!? Seems a lot of weird things keep happening like my Original Maiden account with the Title Steve gave me was removed and I had to setup this newbie account - now my posts are disappearing to... Oh well I'll post again and see if the 'ghost in the machine' takes umbrage again! ![]() |

Re: Contest 134: Make it rain
just a question here, and i'm not trying to point out flaws in other peps work (seeing as i haven't offered any images myself). but really am wanting to know the answer for future work. short of going outside and watering the street to have a look, wouldn't the reflections be at somewhat of an angle and not centered over the building parts? i mean the reflections wouldn't be straight up and down, would they? and they wouldn't be directly straight under the real building parts would they? and it would all depend on what angle you are standing/viewing at, wouldn't it? the reason i'm asking is i'm seeing some images where everything is straight up and down and centered...it doesn't look right. and then i'm seeeing some with angles applied...and they don't really look right either. lol! whats the answer!? |

Re: Contest 134: Make it rain
Hi DarkEdge. When all else fails one can observe real objects, scenes or look at photos. As you can see by this scene the reflections go more or less straight down. Where the reflection meets the object would depend on how close the reflective surface is to the object. Another variable is how close the observer is to the plane of the reflective surface. These buldings are perpendicular to the water. I suppose if they were leaning back at an angle, their reflections would be at an angle. ![]() |

Picture an overcast day, slight drizzle. Then the rain starts coming down hard. Things are wet but not flooded yet. ![]() |

Re: Contest 134: Make it rain
This was a tricky challenge, and one that produced some excellent results. One small mistake a number of you made was in creating the reflections: yes, they should come straight down over the pavement/sidewalk and the road, but we shouldn't see any reflections on the vertical face of the kerb stones. First to get the umbrella up was vibeke, with a great watery texture on the road and a cool couple of kids enjoying the rain. The reflections, of course, should be vertical rather than angled: the rain acts as a mirror flat on the ground, even if the ground isn't flat. Excellent reflections, and some very neat (if a little patchy) rain from vicho. I wonder, though, about the sky: it looks too blue to be raining that heavily! Good rain from michael sinclair, but the middle window seems a little misplaced to me. How did it slip to the side? The animation in the second entry is fantastic - especially the splashes where the rain hits the road. Excellent. Very fine rain, some great rippling on the surfaces, and convincing reflections from Ben Mills. What I really like here, though, is the tone of the image: there's a starkness to it that really gives a sense of the weather conditions. This is great work, Ben. I've been looking for an excuse to give you a long overdue title, ever since I forgot to do so after your fantastic Paris rooftops entry a few weeks back. And since in both cases it's the quality of the light that has made your entries stand out, I think Luminous Luminary fits the bill. And about time too! I was really tickeld by Dirtdoctor23's entry: the sight of that man keeping his cello dry added a lot of life to this one. I think the shadows beneath them may be a little too strong, though: and isn't it a bit early for Halloween? Better reflections in the second entry! I don't know how much anger Pauline's got in her this week, but it's certainly all coming out in the image! This is absolutely startling, a really impressive effect. Poltergeists at no 23, do we think? Bit of an angle problem on the reflections in the second entry! We expect great work from Tom, but this week's entry is exceptional. It's not so much the technique - although it is beautiful, to be sure, and that ripple in the water looks perfect; more an appreciation of how water might lie in the road. Obviously, it would tend to sit in the gutter, while leaving the high points clear. Amazing work. looks like josephine harvatt has got a little water on her lens - what a great idea! And that nightclub looks better than the model shop ever did. Do you think the good folk of Bury St Edmunds are ready for such a place? I love these day-for-night conversions, and dave.cox has given us an excellent example. I love the rain cascading over the pavement, but feel bound to point out that the hold in the wall it's escaping from is not a drain, but a boot scraper. Do you think maybe the yellow is a bit too jaundiced? An excellent first entry from SCync - good rain, a convincing day for night effectm and the new streetlamp provides a good focal point. The water running out of the drainpipe works really well, too. Only thing I'm not clear on is the rather odd way the reflections seem to be falling onto the pavement: they're not projected there! But a great start. Welcome to the forum! More night views, this time from stefan: good rain, great rippling water, and the subtle lighting works particlarly well. I'm assuming that's a streetlamp reflected in the window, rather than a light behind it: it certainly does the job. And I love the torrent in the second entry! The rainy day Wayne's given us is certainly one of those on which I'd rather stay in bed. Strangely, it was like that the last time I was in Bury St Edmunds... the figure with the umbrella is a really nice touch here, but I'd like to have seen a light or two in those windows! A lot of interest in Steve Mac's entry, with very neat water splashes and some fantastic water gushing down the gutter. The opened door, the man with the beard, the lights over the shop next door, the couple beneath the umbrella, and above all the woman washing her windows - priceless. This is great! Really good work, Steve. I've never been to Seattle, but if it's anything like Neal suggests, I'll remember to take a kayak with me. A very fine flood, and both the guy wading through it and the ducks (with fantastic reflections) make this work well. Best of all are the water stains on the walls: such detail! It's all a bit dark considering there's such a bright sky, though, wouldn't you say? Ben has gone all rosy on us: great water and a fine person with the umbrella, but why the strange hue shift? Intriguing. I like the duck: the angle is just right to show it swimming down the street. GKB's homage to Gene Kelly is splendid - the modern lamp post fitting in perfectly too. Great reflections, very convincing lighting, and a good neon sign for the cinema (although I'm not sure a serif font is appropriate). Charming work, Gordon! There's a good sense of the rain bouncing off the roof in Rufus' entry, and again I like the way the water is sitting in the low parts of the road. I see what you're doing by making the reflections lean backwards: but that would only happen if all the buildings were really on a tilt. In this case, we'd have to assume that it's the camera work that was a bit shaky, so the reflections should be following a vertical line down through the buildings at that angle. An entertaining animation from james - I like the dogs, especially. Some rather curious timing here, though, and I have to take issue with the colour of the walls! On such a dull day (your street has even turned monochrome) are you sure they'd sing out like that? The first Friday Challenge entry from Fire Tiger, and some well drawn rain - which works particularly well in the animated version. Once again, though, the reflections should be going straight down, following the verticals set by the building. Hold a book against a mirror, and you'll see what I mean! Welcome to the forum! A truly dazzling entry from char, who just keeps getting better and better. It's worth reloading to see the umbrella flying in again! There's so much here: the rain, the moving water in the gutter, the paper hat, the swinging pub sign - fantastic. Char, you're a genius! I was highly amused by Whaler's surreal entry - Magritte would have been proud of you. i love the rain, and the texture of the puddles. But just one oddity: why is it that the buildings are creating reflections, but not the people? Moody work from Dek_101, with - appropriately - Dustin Hoffman's Rain Man making a guest appearance. Very fine reflections, I love the ripples in the water, and the upstairs window has been artfully opened (bet that was tricky). Tasty work. Some real driving rain from fitzpas: and good puddles sitting in the gutter, too. With the wind as strong as this, though, wouldn't we see the shop sign swinging? And perhaps the cone blowing over? A muted, almost sepia effect from maiden, with artful puddles and a great sense of a shiny pavement. This technique of lowering the strength of the reflection over the pavement really gives it a sense of dampness: it's a simple technique, but one that isn't obvious to do. Neat work! The water on stefan's lens is excellent - with wonderful distortion. I'm not sure about the shadows, though, and I'm reluctant to get my camera lens just to find out how it would really look. Nice rippling puddles here. A fine flood from Philip Saunders, with a good composition given by the binoculars man in the foreground, and great reflections on the ducks (and the rubber one at the back's a hoot, or rather a quack). Just checked out your web page, Philip - and on the Duck Page it says 'no duck news at present'. What is it with the ducks? A dim and drizzly day from caballeroq: the rain may be easing off, but it's clearly been heavy. Great puddles with subtle reflections: the splashes work exceptionally well. A very painterly entry from Aromicfog, with highly textured reflections and a good sense of gloom. The lit up window is a good addition, but I think the glow around the outside of the glass is too strong: you have the section of wall illuminated - but from the inside? We haven't seen Lexus here for several months - welcome back. An interesting technique, with greatly shortened reflections: but why would this be the case? Surely it would only happen if the reflective surface was curved in some way? A great sky, though, and I like the rain. We've talked about perspective and vanishing points a lot here, and Bob's entry raises the question again. Our eye line, from the point of view of this picture, is just as if we were standing in the street. Which means that anyone else in the same location should be of roughly the same height as us. Lift the guy with the umbrella up, Bob! The rain works well, but he's a midget! There seems to have been some controversy over whether reflections should go straight down, or at an angle. The answer is: since we can assume the buildings are vertical, and the water surface has to be horizontal, they have to go straight! Here's a book held against a mirror. It doesn't matter what angle we view it from: if the book is at 90 degrees to the mirror, the reflection always follows the vertical in the book: ![]() |

Re: Contest 134: Make it rain
this time I've been only watching... (more than watching, staring my eyes) with great pleasure. All of your entries seems great to me. I must confess that I felt I little overhelmed by your technichs about making rain and was trying to find a creative way to give my challenge an 'extra' point of view without sucess ![]() I've enjoyed a lot of with this challenge, studying all your entries, as much as if I would post also. You're all fantastic; really. See you soon, in the next challenge ![]() |
