Oh man, Michael! That's a lot of work, but it's worth it. I know what you mean about finding images for montages, I spend hours surfing the web to find the right image. Char, you are a gem! Your art is fantastic! |

Thanks Michael. Apologies for this, but I had to get rid of a couple of too-straight lines in the broken jaw that were bugging me! |

Re: Contest 136: Flesh and bones
Some fine grisly entries this week! First to dig up the bones was Steve Mac, with a beautifully grubby pair of skull bookends. Credit here for knocking out different teeth on both skulls, so they looked like different objects! Like the gold tooth, but the eye seems a little too fresh... A good piece of archaeology from mguyer, who appears once again as the photographer (at least I assume that's you, Marty - your beard appears to have grown somewhat). The skull's well buried in the sand, but maybe too big for the perspective of the scene? These things are very hard to judge. Maybe people were much bigger then? Like the vulture in the second entry. And the montage in the third entry is excellent - now, there's someone who could do with a good dentist. A variety of techniques from dave.cox, presenting the skulls with different degrees of degradation. That IKEA cupboard seems made for the job! Surprised they don’t have that one in their catalogue. A great gag from josephine harvatt, with the young and old skulls competing for the same part in Hamlet. Some great decay on the nearest skull - and the added green moss works very well. A very tasty aquarium scene from Michael Sinclair, neatly animated with plenty of objects wavering in the underwater current. The second entry is dazzling - an entire feature film compressed into 19 frames! The flickering lights, the pulsating cupboard... excellent stuff, Michael. The only change I'd have made would be to tuck the body of the snake behind the skull, so it looked more like it was coming from around the back of it. I was very tickled by Pierre's entry - a perfect toothbrush holder! Very classy work, particularly the extra-shiny teeth. Is that a ball of string in the nose? Ah, no... mental floss! A truly bizarre texture from Dirtdoctor23: some kind of Aztec bone-tattoing ritual, perhaps? Great lighting, and the spider works perfectly. Be interested to know how you did the web! The eyes in the second entry are a good addition. A wonderfully detailed entry from Tom - and it's well worth checking out the enlargementto see the detail. He's given us lichen, scratches, a bit of plastic wrap (yes!) and some intriguing remnants of skin and hair. There's even a bullet hole in there - nice work! Very grisly stuff indeed. Neal never misses the chance to have a go at Bush - and here's the beleagured president once more, bursting into flames. Wishful thinking? Good fire, but I'd have faced the skull the other way - and I'd certainly have got rid of the join line! A nod to 2001 from Valter, who has wrapped his skull in the cosmos: the fireball eye is an excellent choice. I'd have wrapped the text around the skull so it looked more like it was written on the surface, but otherwise an intriguing entry. A mixture of comedy and tragedy from GKB, with some dazzling gore and very shiny eyeballs. But shouldn't the blood on the floor have a reflection as well? Reflections work better in the second entry, certainly. Some great candlelight from Ben Mills, with interesting texture on the skulls. It's not often I ask to see an image animated, but I'd really like to see a flicker on that candle! Excellent texture and colouring from Wayne, looking astonishingly realistic. This is a really beautiful piece of work, you should be very proud of this one. Had great trouble spotting the improvements in the second entry, though! An entertaining animation from james - the skull finally biting back! It's more complex than it might look at firsg glance: that wolf had to be broken into several parts so that the legs, tail and head could all be animated separately. But we need shadows! A neat gravestone from Philip Saunders, beautifully lit to match the standing stone background. i really like the feet popping up through the grass on the right - nice touch! A neat skull tattoo from Glen - certainly makes a change from spiders and swallows. Isn't it facing the wrong way, though? Or does she just like having eye sockets in the back of her arm? Once again, Char first teases us with a spectacular image, then goes on to make it move. It's a great gag, with the seagull dropping an egg in the skull's eye: and, as always plenty of background animation going on too. A particularly interesting approach to the surf! Magnificent. A beautifully shiny skull from GKB, who's done a great job of making this one metallic. Only one quibble here, Gordon: do you think it's a bit lemony overall? I'd add a fair dollop of red in there to warm up the gold effect. A really entertaining montage from Pete, who clearly has a sense of humour about these things. Grisly, though: and the way the blood runs out of the nostrils and works its way round the teeth and over the jaw is spot on. Disgusting, in a comic sort of way. Deborah Morley has unearthed (unsanded?) a great skull, with plenty of good detail: the soft buying, the excellent way the sand clings to the forehead, jaw and elsewhere, the spooky lizard. I have a bit of a problem with the lizard's shadow, though, especially where it doesn't meet the feet. Sometimes, these things just have to be painted in by hand. A truly mouthwatering cake from Pierre to mark his first year of Friday Challenges - not only a great idea, but a perfect execution. I can't work out how you got that icing to look so much like chocolate! And the reflections, the cake texture, the puff of candle smoke - fantastic. What an excellent piece of work! A well buried viking (well, what else would we expect) from Whaler, neatly tucked into the rock and with a few front teeth convincingly broken away. I like the fact that the skull is so small in the scene, it adds a lot of drama: but I'd question its positioning just below the middle of the frame. This is really a weak point in an image: move it up, down or to either side to create more dynamism. And a very accomplished last-minute entry from bonyman, with our skull carved into Mount Rushmore. This is a hard technique to master, and it's been well achieved here: good work, Callum! Of course, I should have saved this one for Halloween. Couldn't wait... |

Re: Contest 136: Flesh and bones
Thanks for the comments Steve. Great piece of work on the cake, Pierre! Yes, I felt a bit guilty submitting a second entry that was not much different from the first! I was bothered by the awkward angles left over from the removal of the lower jaw, and felt sure you would pick up on them! |
