I just wanted to let you all know - I got a job! They're ringing to confirm tomorrow, but all being well, I will be a Microbiology Lab Assistant at the local hospital. I've been out of work for 7.5 years due to my health, so I'm pretty chuffed to be getting back to work.

Anyway, on with this week's entry... Well, apart from being last minute as usual, this entry was done whilst getting used to Windows Vista, Photoshop, *and* Webfetch (search engine - earning ipoints).

Re: Contest 165: Punch and Judy
First to stick his hand up Mr Punch this week was stefan, with a grinning puppet that seems to have come to life. There's an eerie, menacing quality here, the shadows pointing to a late afternoon setting. The consistency of tone in Punch and the background is perfect - and that's what really makes this one work.

Marty - and, presumably, Mrs Marty - pop in with a guest appearance in mguyer's entry. Have you shaved off your beard? Or had a sex change? Either way, you look different here. Are you sure Punch and Judy should be string rather than glove puppets, though? And I'd have thought those strings would be rather difficult to pull if they all came from the same point! No, hang on, surely that's Mrs Marty in the second entry - who on earth are all these people?

A hellishly satirical entry from GKB, with clown Bush from a few weeks ago taking on Osama. The presidential seal is a nice touch, and that nuclear explosion makes a strong backdrop. What a fantastic devil, though! Where did you find him? Or did you draw him?

Another set of string puppets, this time from 2bfree - neatly timed to coincide with the Labour Party Conference this week. The divided chin is a nice touch, accentuating the puppet quality. A much stronger puppet theatre than my original, though - good work on this.

A detailed explanation of photo restoration from dave.cox, who's brought back the contrast of the image using Curves - and provided us with a snapshot of the settings used. Do you think it would be possible to treat the side wall so its stripes matched the strength of the top?

A very traditional Punch and Judy from vibeke, in a neatly restored setting. I seem to have transformed into the Duke of Wellington, though. Must say, the costume rather suits me. An entertaining second entry - glad your PC seems better!

More animation genius from tooquilos: and lot of thought and detail has gone into this one. First, we have the pouting Don Juan (wherever did you find him???) showing off, while the ballerina warms up in the wings; he knocks the chandelier and twirls his arm, and she leaps up just in time to catch the A of the heading. Then, as he prances off, she returns to catch it again. Fantastic! I really enjoyed this one!

Superb lighting is what makes Neil O's entry so powerful: the stark shadow of Punch, and especially the way the spotlight has been offset on the interior (although I'd question the position of the top right section of the arc: surely this should be down and to the left, to match the shadow direction?). A don't recognise the victim - certainly not Judy, I'd say. A very appealing, strong image altogether.

At last - a real glove puppet - from Neal, with a great piece of political commentary. The glove puppet itself works perfectly, and fits neatly onto Bush's hand. We'd expect details such as the microphone brought to the front, the seal and the White House backdrop: but what really makes this for me is the red glow on Bush's head and shoulders, from the interior of the booth.

A nice night view from Whaler - and, of course, with the moon in that position we wouldn't be able to see anything on the front of the booth. Shouldn't the moon be more blue, though, to match the light it's casting?

Bush pops up again, this time playing bongos in james's animation - with some nifty dancing by the clown behind him. He could have been given something to sit on, though. And I enjoyed the second entry, particularly the way the giraffe moves towards the camera - most convincing.

A very evocative image from powerslave, with a dark scene that's intricately lit. The front banner, with its lettering, need to be in the same perspective as the booth, though: a touch of distortion needed here. That subtly lit moon is a great addition.

A very neat shower scene from chris berry, combining our seaside attraction with that other favourite, the What the Butler Saw machine (more or less). Slightly harsh lines on the new striped front - is your Lasso set with anti-aliasing turned off? The new signboard makes good use of the stroke style, though.

First entry from a new member this week - and da newb has dived straight in with a fantastic Barbie vs Ken shootout. The lighting is excellent, particularly the way the lighting on the lettering matches that of the scene. Best of all, though, is the strong restraint shown in making the two figures so small. The temptation to beef up their size must have been enormous - but it's the scale that really adds poignancy to the scene. Excellent stuff - welcome to the forum!

A great grandstand setting from Meltonian, with exactly the right angle on the stage to match the original. The radial lighting and spotlights are good touches, but it's the out of focus hands in the foreground that really bring this one to life for me. Ah, Abba - those were the days...

A real flash of genius this week from katew, with a beautifully modernised booth. The hand-held controller, the quality of the light on the screen, the changing of the clock for a digital one, and the disconsolate Punch kicked out of the booth - all are perfect. My only criticism (and you knew this had to come) is that the vanishing point lines, shown by the top and middle of the booth, should of course point to the horizon...

A rare (these days) entry from maiden - with a tiny Tom Cruise playing the Punch role to a traditional Judy. They fit perfectly within the setting: but the audience seems too small in comparison, even if they are scaled to match Tom Cruise's head size. And should they all be middle aged men??? Good to see you back here, Becky.

A subtle and clever animation from michael sinclair, who's clearly casting doubts on the pontiff's sobriety. I like the way the bottles are removed one by one, but - of course - have to query the angle of view: we're looking up at the booth, but down on the bottle labels.

A couple of dancing dolls from Abby-Helen Artfield, set against a new backdrop both inside and outside the booth. There's some white fringing around those dolls, where they've been selected from a white background: see my selections chapter for ways to get rid of this!

Some very odd participants indeed in steve hill's entry: who are these men? Are we supposed to recognise them? Their costumes are great, but in all cases I'd have pulled them down so that their feet weren't visible: that way, we'd hav the impression that there could be hands manipulating them.

Very funny work from Deborah Morley, with the spectator pointing towards the invisible fleas. Great lettering, perfect perspective on the top sign, and the Now Showing sign - with its clip copied from the original - is a really good touch. Excellent.

A fully updated show from josephine harvatt, with a panto Judy wielding a Star Wars style baton against a Dalek. So that's where all the scifi props go out of season! Most entertaining, Jo.

A set of shrunken performers fill celosia's booth - and why not, if that's what it takes to bring the crowds back in. Looks suspiciously like a church gathering to me, though - the altar in the foreground's a bit of a giveaway. Congratulations on the new job!

Thanks Steve,
I just googled 'devil images' and he came straight up. He needed a little bit of photoshopping to get another arm. It wasn't quite what I had in mind but he looked so good I had to use him. And he was fairly high res as well!

Congratulations on the new job Helen. Hope it all goes well.

Thank you Steve! Had a lot of fun doing this one. I stumbled across our Don Juan few months ago on a Ballet Site. Subsequently, I found out who he was..his name is Sayat Asatryan, an Armenian Ballet Dancer.

Am in two minds as to whether he would appreciate my .gif LOL

Re: Contest 165: Punch and Judy
Thanks Steve. So am I right in thinking the horizon should be roughly level with the 'next show' card? I'm desperately trying to get perspective right, so any more clarification would help.

Pretty much, yes - or perhaps slightly higher. Of course, it means you don't get to see nearly so much of the beach that way:

Re: Contest 165: Punch and Judy
Haha the Middle aged men are the Agent, and the Stage owners I was thinking of a proper audience but I would have needed to source a good enough picture - oh well I was being lazy I own up. As for the scale of the people it was from your CD and was shot from a strange angle and I botched it trying to make then look in the right direction. Cruise's head was deliberately large as he is somewhat big headed apparently

Thanks Steve, Gordon & Vibeke. And mum, I think yours is cool, but then I have been spending most of what little spare time I've had recently playing gameboy/gameboy advance games...

Re: Contest 165: Punch and Judy
Hi Steve,

Yes, the rest of the photo should have separate adjustments as well. I didn't want to get too complicated in what I was showing, so I held off doing them, but here it is with the remaining adjustments. The areas were adjusted separately by selecting each area using the pen tool, and then adding a new adjustment layer. The masks were tweaked as needed. to get it to blend well.
