The breed of cattle is the famous Angus-Aberdeen from the Highlands of Scotland, so how about another famous Scottish Icon: Monarch of the Glen by Edwin Landseer. Click on pic for bigger: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Anna, she's a mix, golden retriever and terrier I guess. She could use a trip to your wonderful barber shop. |

Re: Contest 209: Have a cow, man
Good to see so much action here after my couple of weeks away. These cows have provoked a lot of inspired thinking: what is it about cows that sparks off the imagination? First off was Mick Malkemus, with a flying saucer rising from the earth. Intriguing reflections on the saucer: why is the sky reflected underneath, rather than on top? A Texas license plate from Neil O - but surely a true Texan cow's horns should be four times the size of this paltry creature? I see dave.cox is an animal lover - but no vegetarian. One solution, certainly. Fine work from dikidee - I especially like the way the scene is repeated through the window. But there shouldn't be paint on the side of the canvas; and if the picture were a little more unfinished, it would add to the effect. A surreal moment from Nick Curtain: I can see how cows might make you think of matadors, but those police helmets are way out of left field! I like the second entry , but watch the contrast: the shadows on the cows are much darker than the shadows in the painting. (Constables in both images, eh?) A great merging of the cows into a landscape by Ben Mills - excellent treatment of the animals, with good reflections. Very consistent all round - good work, Ben. Funny stuff from Trev - I don't think I've seen a flashing bull before. Odd business with the coat, though: hard to imagine a bull inside that costume. Managed to catch a glimpse of the icon for Hope Leslie Laust's image, but it was too corrupted for me to open in Photoshop. Looks good, from the very low res version I was able to see: but you must remember to keep the .jpg extension! I laughed out loud at james' entry - love the twitching legs on that poor moo! Very funny work. A great idea from GKB: perfect addition of hands and camera, and you've closed that eye beautifully. Another entry with no regard for animal welfare: Ctee sees our bovines as making good nautical buffers. They certainly look good, but think of the mess when two ships collide... I love brewell's entry - it's the caption that really makes this work so well. But it's well executed, too, with great shadows and blending: perhaps slightly more soft focus on the distant cows? I don't know if mguyer's entry represents cruelty to cows, or to cowboys. Either way, I'm glad I'm not involved. A great action shot, Marty! Beautiful work from mariong, whose magic transformation bath does make the cow melt away. Magical work, indeed: I'd like to see a little thickness to the walls of the bath, though. A really funny idea from Andy L - it's the tube that really makes it. Plus, of course, the ingenious way the cow appears through the glass. Perfect. Ellen's dog belnds in very neatly with the scene, the lighting and shadows matching well. But - heavens, is your dog really that size? What happens when it tries to sit on your lap? A wonderful animation from tooquilos - I love the way we can see the cow through the slats in the fence, and the twitching tail is a nice detail. Slightly bothered about the sign, though: how would the O have had space to fit in? A great idea from katew - I especially like the way the washing bends over the head of the cow on the left. Fine, as long as they don't get thirsty... Most intrigued by Babybiker's plastic cows. What are these things? How do they come into being? And - where on earth do people store them between parades? Great work replacing the original cow on the bank with your own! A new member - and cyberty has certainly been having fun with some explosions. I love the googly eyes on these critters! Good work, and welcome to the forum! A stirring portrait from michael sinclair, and it's good to see the various stages it went through. But did you really need to remove the whole stag first? I'd have thought you only need to take out the parts that aren't hidden behind the cow... Very entertaining work all round! |

Re: Contest 209: Have a cow, man
Thanks Steve I wanted to produce something a little 'far side' with the first one. With the second, I reduced the contrast with both curves and brightness and Contrast to make the cows fit better, but neither worked terribly well. The day after I'd posted the entry, it occured to me that shadow and highlight may produce a better job and it did, but it was too late then! Nick |

Re: Contest 209: Have a cow, man
Thanks Steve. Cow Parades are now springing up all over the World, and even have their own model ornament collectors etc. Manchester's one (2004) had over 150 full sized beasts dotted aroud the streets, on top of buildings, floating on water etc. The original idea behind it was to create a "public Art display" using animals... and as hamsters were too small and elephants were too big, cows seemed to be the obvious answer! The "blank" cows are sponsored and then given to local artists, groups and businesses to decorate and display... and each one is then named (Danger Moo-se, Heifer Nice Flight etc). Manchester Council and Cowparade did a great job in promoting the event with a Souvenir Guide, maps and other memoriabillia. Unfortunately, as is the way, some cows were vanadlised during the event, but the organisers did their best to get them back on the streets as soon as possible, and always left a notice explaining why a cow was missing. Once the event is over (3 months in total) the cows are then auctioned off for charity. I thought I was going to be the only person strange enough to try and see all the cows, and collect the photos of them, but over the course of the event, I kept bumping into other Cow Maniacs, and we ended up helping each other out finding the well hidden ones etc. One family had flown over from Dublin for a fortnight's holiday, just so their son could see them all! I ended up with 575 photos of the cows and related objects, signs etc, but still missed a few of the scuptures. Sometime next week, I will post a couple of my favourites on the gallery, and when I get round to it, will probably put most of them up on my website. In the meantime, have a look at http://www.cowparade.com/ BB ![]() |
