Hehe... I only started on a PC running Windows 3.1 when I was the ripe age of 3.

Nick, I was doing similar to you, especially with the light. You've son a great job, mine was not there, and don't need to do it now.

Comments appreciated Trevor. I wanted to give the impression of snow under those horrible sodium street lights. I hope it looks realistic.

Nick, I was finding the sodium light difficult, all the shadows and highlights on the house .. (I think Mr C was leaving that clue/trap for the light maybe ? ) ... great minds think alike(?), again, .... FEW! don't have to do that . BTW no snow here often,

Sorry for the noise .... bit of history and just being humbble ....

Imagine when I was at school we had teletype, which had to visit at GPO and my first programme (sik! ) was for pendulems motion (maths), 4 lines of BASIC .... and then in Germany (research insitute), had access to IBM machine (vary rare and expensive) where we used punched cards to program the dam'.... machines using FORTAN, and trying to get a graph out using assembler was a pain! .... so so much better now .... I can do art and not just science and engineering, I'm so happy

I preferred unix (linux) later, but got forced into MS (no comment)

Not stupid though I hope

I am used to MS now... even though so many say it is rubbish. Some people swear by Mac but I have never got on with it.

I had an old Amstrad and BBCB but they didn't work properly.

Reminds me of when I was in college during the 80s (1984 I think) learning to program in Pascal and Psuedo Code (made up code to help you understand programming logic). They took us to some University or other to show us the IBM punchcard machine which was still in use. We also went to Sheffield City Council's computer rooms which was like visiting a Bond set with Drum Disc loaders the size of washing machines and Data Reels. At that time I only had a Amstrad CPC464 more of a games machine than a computer but it's where I started to learn Amstrad Basic from copying code from magazines. The Internet wasn't available to anyone other than Universities and The Military of course.

We had just got the new PC-AT IBM machines at the college and used them to learn Assembly Code and Mnemonics as well as some Databasing and Spreadsheet - wow that takes me back.

I ended up with a City & Guilds in Computer Programming and Information Processing which is a defunct standard now but I never followed it further than that which was a pity.

Interesting backgrounds you guys have... I never got any more into programming than a couple of games when I was 13

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
Becky,

You have everything to be proud of. Your very honest. Please tell me what the "pity" is, I mean that?

I love PASCAL, (great French guy) even did some programs with it (and many others).

Used Psuedo Code many times. I think its okay/important, programers cant be bothered to comment (incuded me ).

I remember those huge multi-platter disks hard drives and had to get out of those washingmachine drives. They used to crash, what a mess !! So we had big tape drives, real Bond stuff!!

Maybe I'm lucky at t my university we one of the "advanced" computer with a computer room (program BASIC). We did physics/maths, very strange equations. There were too many nurdrs in there even then, so I just went to see may mates

Becky, if you want you can and will still learn (I think you know this). Sometimes in later it is easier later (presuming you are sort of similar age).

E.g. I learn(t) Chinese, Spanish and seemed to get pass B "A" Level art in 9 months with evening class.

Trevor

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
I'm not strange, but the winter(North)/summer(south) solstice happened yesterday (if you did not notice).

If you go to Ireland and Scotland you''ll see very ancient sites (4000~) aligned to this, just only that day when this sun rises. Our remembrance for dead is long , and our history is long. nothing stops .... (Salisbury Stonehenge does summer in the north hemesphere)

I wish I could share more but not possible :{

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
Jota, I remember those multi-platter hard drives too. I too had a few of them crash, or should I say 'Explode'. What a mess!

I also remember learning to type on a bright an shiney new Royal typewriter. A big mechanical monstor that could produce documents, without any electricity at all! I thought it a real treat when we upgraded to the IBM selectric.

And my first computer was the Commodore 64, with built in basic.

(Oops, I'm showing my age).

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
So first the static.

All the lights come from the sky (some might call it heaven, ..... its the universe, scary and loving)

PS most of us live in light polluted towns/cites now. If you have the chance get out into the country, mountains, desert on a clear night and see the stars and the Milky Way if you can, maybe you do ??? That sky does not change often (orbits excepted) unless you can see a supernova!!

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
Thanks so much to all that "got" me to do the animation, especially Becky and Steve.

Its really clunky doing it in PS, but guess it gave a chance

Hope this works. Don't think need a more detailed highres version link(?)

And if you want to see a real one via Youtube try here: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap081125.html

PS noone died in my images, just enriched the soil. Be safe.
