I thought Sid James was as extinct as the dodo looks like they have both come back to haunt us

It was not the dodo's new wings so much as his increased cranial capacity and opposable thumbs that allowed him to leave the wild and rise to the top of cultured society.

I had so much fun looking at this week's challenge, really funny entries and some very impressive Photoshop work, well done to everyone!
Kate, I loved the folks getting hysterical in your picture, really made me laugh. Great stuff.

I'm afraid I didn't have time to do an entry this week (first week back at work after the holidays and it's been maaaadness..), but I did have a good idea for one. Might have a go at the weekend, time permitting.
Again, great work folks!

Contest 230: Dead as a dodo
Hi Guys, Not posted for a while but hoping to get back into more regular posting .. some great entries .. particularly like what you've done with the wings Nick - great stuff. I dunno about Fridays .. I think if the dodo had made it to 2009 he'd be finding that everyday was a challenge

Yay! How depressing

Happy New year All

Re: Contest 230: Dead as a dodo
Good to see so many varied approaches to the extinction problem - and good, too, to see the old bird in action once more.

First attempt at resurrection came from Lexus, who's produced a fossilised dodo. Except that the thing about fossils, Alex, is that it's a process whereby the bones turn to stone, not the whole animal! Yours is rather more reminiscent of a dodo that's stood too close to a nuclear blast.

An evolutionary approach from Nick Curtain: with its rather magnificent new wings, our bird seems flightless no more. It's an excellent piece of work, Nick, with convincing shading on the rear wing. Dodos are actually about three feet high - unless you've mutated the squirrel as well?

A dodo patrol from tooquilos that seems sure to keep the critters going for the foreseeable future: they may not be able to fly, but they pack a hell of a lot of firepower. Great animation, and I love the little boots. Minor point: the word DODO on the side of the jeep needs to be condensed more, as we're looking at it from a very sharp angle. Superb choice of sound clips in the flash version - a double helping of Clint, plus Arnie!

A bit of a celebrity chef from Josephine Harvatt (for those from outside the UK, the original is Gordon Ramsay, a TV cook known more for his constant swearing than for his cooking). A fine array of knife feathers there, and a beautifully feathery cutout.

Another armed dodo, from brewell - and this one seems to have recruited Nick Curtain's squirrel to fight his battles for him. They make a great combination!

Some serious firepower from GKB - with a tank that seems to be spewing molten lava. That, and the explosion, may be based on flames, but that's now how explosions look! Still, if the hat fits - and it does, rather well. Good to see your planes making a guest appearance. I like the camouflage in the second entry - a great angle on the base, especially. Rather too heavy shading, though, and the shadow seems a little detached from it.

Fantastic work from Ben Mills - first, in placing the dodo behind that fence, and second in distressing the warning signs so convincingly. And what a great idea! If they had guard dodos, I'd get one.

Tremendous flapping wings from james: one of the things I like most about this - and do many of your animations - is the way it cycles perfectly back to the beginning. A great walking leg motion right at the end: but shouldn't the legs trail behind it a little when in flight? I like the Roman armour on the second entry!

A gorgeous, evocative montage from stefan, with a Victorian assembly of body parts. Excellent shading, beautiful tonal matching: this reminds me of the work of Joel Peter Witkin, the master of the macabre and the bizarre. Not to everyone's taste, perhaps, but it struck a chord with me.

A bevy of dodos from vibeke: the reflections imply that they're walking on water, which would be an interesting sight. The two on the far left and right could do with a little more shading to blend them into their rather dark surroundings; and what's the significance of the blue plumage?

Clever work from Andy L, with a well fitting helmet and choice new lettering. A touch of fade-off at the top, where the curvature of the glass might cause some refraction, would be a good addition here.

An ingenious reworking of the Dido cover from powerslave: the out-of-focus dodo blends in perfectly with the background, and she's almost looking at it. Some ugly black borders around the lettering, though - more of a reconstruction job needed on the background here!

A veteran bird from gaoxiguo: the slightly raised leg gives the bird a reason to rest on his stick. A great location, as well - very neat work.

A giant dodo from mguyer - this one would be about six feet tall! Great colour matching, and I like the way its feet are digging into the sand. This would be the Colorado branch of the family?

Steve Hill gives us an infiltrator in a chicken coop - and it fits in rather well at the back there. My only problem here is it that appears to be standing behind another chicken, when its feet are on the same plane - something of a contortion act!

I suppose we should have expected Jota120's entry... sigh... but all is redeemed with the second entry, a wonderful hybrid of two (now) non-flying things with wings.

A colourful approach from ziiwow - is that the ZigZag filter on an extreme setting? This is certainly one way of bringing it to life!

A fantastic setting from katew, with the giant dodo looming over Times Square - and that does look rather like Sid James, you know. My only problem here is the girl bottom right, who's too highly saturated for the scene. And adding a little rotation to her, away from the dodo, would have accentuated the sense of people fleeing.

I'm intrigued by the evolutionary advances in Hope Leslie Laust's entry: it's both scary and entertaining at the same time. Should the hands be such different sizes, though?

Some clever adaptation from Deborah Morley, with the bird given aquatic capabilities. Excellent setting, and a great shadow beneath the bill. One suggestion: bring the top of the nearest leg higher, or add some feathers to the top of the rear one - it looks a little too duplicated.

A terrific composition from Dek_101, with a beautifully balanced scene. If that hook's hanging from a fishing line, surely the weight of the bread (and of the hook itself) needs to bend it forwards to a significant degree? Great textures in this one. Good to see you back, Derrick.

Re: Contest 230: Dead as a dodo
Thanks Steve

Having read up a little on how the Dodo failed to exist (apparently monkeys and pigs ate their eggs), I omitted to note how big they were! That said, we do have pretty big squirrels in Bedfordshire. This little fella was snapped not far from the river.
