Re: Challenge 286: Discworld
I would recommend "Guards, Guards", "Reaperman" and "Going Postal" to start with ... but they are all good.

Re: Challenge 286: Discworld
Hi everyone
I am going away for the this weekend. Won't be back till next Sunday. So I can't do the next Friday Challenge.Because this Sunday(02.14.10) is a new year in China.(新年 I wish everyone heppy new year.--祝大家新年快乐!

And this is my work in this week.

This post is about an old old old story in China.People believe the earth is a square and the sky is a circle. The four 乌龟 under the earth that the earth can fly in space. And the four 大象under the sky just like four pillars.------古时人们认为天是圆的地是方的.地由四只巨大的乌龟驼着,使地能漂浮在宇宙中.

Excellent Anna.

I'm going out today to get a Discworld book to find out what I've been missing all this time.

Some great work this week. I reckon that if all the regular HTCIPers formed a company we could take on Pixar, Dreamworks and ILM.

Some of the earlier books (eg, Colour of Magic & Light Fantastic) I found very difficult to get into for a long time (and even now after 15 years still do)... The Death, Ankh Mormork & Night Watch based books are slightly less fantasy based (?) and seem easier to understand (eg Masquerade, Mort*, Hogfather & Men at Arms are my personal favourites... Going Postal, Making Money & The Truth, seem to be more "Worldly" Historically based so not too difficult to start reading) but you will probably have to read 4-5 different books to get into some issues and themes properly. Try searching for the online APF (Annotated Pratchett Files) after you have read each book to find the "real world" references / similarities to this world... there are plenty!

As for animation, I had to watch Anna's file over and over again... I love it and what an inspired piece of music ... If you are still not sure about trying to read a Pratchett book (it's less heavy going than Tolkien) why not look at renting / buying one of the films - Hogfather or Colour of Magic... even the other half, who doesn't like reading fantasy enjoyed both. The films are GREAT!

Sorry for going on so much, but I am a BIG fan!!!

After all this typing, I think I deserve a pint at the Broken Drum **

*This footnote will only make sense to those who have read a Pratchett book!

** No I'm not on commision

Re: Challenge 286: Discworld
Thanks Gordon and BB. I thought id incorporate a bit of science (big bang) and Greek mythology (Atlas) to it since the image is loosely based on Hindu mythology.

Like Gordon, Ive never read the books but this challenge has stirred my curiousity to find out more about Discworld.

Beautiful Emil. I have chosen the same background! Excellent work everyone.

My favourite book was Light Fantastic with a group of baddies called 'the auditors' and a mythical character called 'luggage' that followed its master everywhere.

Friday evening, New Zealand
I have had a busy week, but did get started today, and then I found that my large freezer had stopped working at least 24 hours ago.
I don't think I need to say more.
Great effort from everybody else.
