Challenge 323: Land of liberty
Hi everybody … Many interesting entries this week … And everybody has been so creative. I really don’t know how you guys manage to come up with your entries so fast.  I myself am really SL…OW. 
I was wondering about one thing though: The beach photo seems to be taken by a wide angle lens. So considering the size of the footprints on the sand (ergo the size of the area), there is no way the upper part of the statue of liberty (because of its enormous dimensions) can be placed in the beach area close to the camera's original location (unless it is FAR FAR FAR away). The other solution would be to break it into pieces (as Luis has done), or put it far far away in the sea, or a combination of the two … But at least not too close to the camera’s original location in the beach!!! Would you agree?!!!  Am I wrong?!!

That's where the basic perspective problem lies, Daniel. That and the fact that the statue has been shot with a long lens further compounding the problem. _________________ Why is there only one body to investigate Monopolies ? |

You are right Daniel - or you can just choose to ignore the problem altogether - adter all it may be a smaller replica of the original statue _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |

Yes Gordon, perspective is the devil here. And Josephine, it is funny that you mention the replica. Five minutes walk from where I live in Tokyo there is this replica of the Statue of Liberty right beside the beach (Odaiba area). I found a photo of this replica on the Internet:

What great entries you've done! Laugh and enjoy your skills. No time here; end of Cork Jazz (+blues) Bank Holiday weekend here in ROI. Sister and friends have just flew back home. I cann't do PS in front of them as the host can I(?) Hope can get another late one in. Great to see new guys too, ..... welcome if I might say..... |

Challenge 323: Land of liberty
When I first saw the photos of the beach and the Statue of Liberty on Friday, I started making associations with monkeys right away! Now, whether in my unconsciousness I was thinking about Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” or Shaffner’s (or Burton’s) “Planet of the Apes”, I am not sure!
When I saw the entries from Vern and Anna (both magnificent), I figured out that I was not alone with this monkey business , only that the Simpsons' version never crossed my mind!
Anyway, this is my monkey-based version! It became a little bit too “boyish” maybe (with soldiers and guns and helicopters) … So.....rry...

by the way..if you are wondering how i did the edges it was a pure fluke...i was buidling a displacement mask so that the shadow conforms to the ground a little..and first time round i forgot to apply a gaussian blur to smooth the edges of the shadow a little and i thought it looked quite cool.. !!! |

Thanks very much Vern for your critique. The seagull has got a vague shadow behind it but it is very faint and not in the right place I think. Didn't know where to put it!  |

Thanks Sophie I tried to reproduce moonlight and it looked acceptable in Photoshop, with the shadow quite visible. When the image had been through the save for web process and posted on the site, it seemed appreciably darker. I actually compared the versions side by side to make sure I wasn't imagining things. Not sure why this should be, but that's life. Nick |

Andrew, I was only thinking where the sun was and the shadows on the beach. I probably got it wrong on my side. Very, very small point. As some others know here my critique when is not the best. |

Andrew, your entry is really nice, and it looks very real. It might be a stupid question, but since I am a beginner I guess I am allowed to ask stupid questions : So, how did you paint all these sea plant effects? Did you have to make special brushes for paiting them? |

Hi there....no i simply used some textures that I thought might be suitable..I then adapted the texture to a reasonable perspective against the sand. I then applied a "darker color" overlay which worked ok in this case.I tried the others though , I chose the one that looked good to me..I then masked the texture and with the help of a Wacom tablet I painted at variable opacity to make it as credible as possible... The wacom pen is great for these things by the way... As for the statue i again use cracked textures as clipping masks, with a combination of hard light and overlay blending modes. The sand that you find in the crown part is a brush i made myself and messed about with the scattering and opacity settings...nothing too scientific lol I use these sites for textures.. http://www.cgtextures.com/ http://www.grungetextures.com/gallery/ hope this helps and fire away if you have other questions...
