Re: Challenge 989: The supermarket refit
First to attempt the supermarket this week was lwc, with an interesting view: it appears to be a window, but the reflection of the girl (perfectly aligned, by the way) suggests a mirror. In which case those vegetables on the left should really appear in front of the mirror as well. Glad the photoshop.london characters have proved useful!

A gameshow reference from Ant Snell, with perfectly stocked shelves and a terrific trolley-wielding couple. I really like what you’ve done with this.

Extraordinary work from DavidMac, with an immaculate dance studio: the reflections are perfect, the detailing spot on. The new floor and window make very good sense of the space; the portrait in the booth goes well with the flowers. I know you’d think I hadn’t done my job properly if I didn’t point out a couple of very tiny errors, so here goes: the reflection of the left heel of the girl second from left should be touching the original; and while the blonde girl appears to be staring at her reflection, she’s actually looking at a lump of wood. But given these are the only small errors I could find in such a complex piece of work, take it in the spirit of pedantry rather than criticism. I like the fact that you bothered with the bevels, but not sure they benefit from the, er, bevel effect. I see you’ve addressed Mariner's niggles, but wouldn’t want you to go to the trouble of working on the image any further.

It’s the supermarket of the past combined with the supermarket of the future for Ben Boardman, with a motorised deliverybot prowling in front of a fully automated packing system. Worth zooming in to see all the detail in the signs here. And you did the bevels! That shows real dedication. Excellent.

Vampire time for Josephine Harvatt, with a distinctly occult-themed supermarket that’s a combination of wine cabinet and window. Or… no, wait a minute, those are mirrors and the vampires don’t have reflections. Genius! What an inspired solution!

I like how GKB has turned the display into a shop window, complete with original J.Sainsbury branding. A slight mismatch with some of the perspectives but then that’s hardly surprising given the complexity of the task. The reflection of the woman in the glass is a nice touch. One thing that would really have helped, though, would be to replace the existing floor outside the shop with a cobbled street, to make it more firmly an outdoor setting.

Some privacy glass from tooquilos, giving just a hint of the activity within. I like the branding. The movement works well in the animated version, and does bring it to life; but then (as with Gordon’s entry) if we’re looking at the store from the outside, shouldn’t the floor be replaced by a road surface?

Never one to stay on brief if it can be avoided, michael sinclair has turned the facade into a rather splendid (and somewhat surprising) ocean-going yacht. A remarkable job of straightening out the woodwork; now you just need to address the symmetry of the two short central columns, and to undistorted the clock.

Never has “Everything must go” had a greater resonance than in Mariner's splendid entry, which imagines a wholly different housing for the facade. Complete with bevels, naturally. There are only a couple of things that bother me here: the strong sunlight coming through the windows doesn’t seem to match the overcast view outside; and your Closing Down sign really needs to be reflected in that mirror! To add human interest, if it were me I’d stick in a shopper peering through the window from the far side.

Oh dear me yes. One of the frequent traps of creating reflections by flipping. I should have spotted that.

and while the blonde girl appears to be staring at her reflection, she’s actually looking at a lump of wood.

Aha! Yes indeed .......... I have been waiting with no small interest to see if you would spot that! In my original post I said "There is incidentally one quite deliberate 'fault' made in the name of composition.". Glad to see you have preserved your Guru status.

By the time I got to them I was running out of steam. Having been the one to draw attention to them in the first place I found, embarrassingly, that I hadn't a clue what to do with them!

This was very demanding but I learned a lot and got a lot of satisfaction from it! Thank you!
