It's so easy to miss stuff in your own work that you spot easily in others. I often do this and miss something really obvious in my image because my concentration has been too focused on another aspect of it. For me, tunnel vision is a constant risk ......... _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 997: The Wisbech Whale
First to hunt the whale this week was lwc, with some fine rippling water and bobbing whale. Good removal of the cars – and I like the tiny figure on the riverbank. Shouldn’t the boat and whale have reflections, though? The houses do. A glorious sunset from GKB, with an intrepid fisherman landing a bigger trout than he expected. The boat has a reflection – but is that a vampire whale? I like the way it moves in the animated version – but I kept waiting for him to land it. A fantastic closeup from Frank, with the bloodied whale being examined by a couple of very suitable urchins. I like the blood in the water, and the onlookers on the far bank – and the new doom-laden sky. Splendid work, Frank. Hope your wife recovers soon. Outstanding work from Ben Boardman, with a truly dramatic scene. Magnificent waves, absolutely appropriate boats both in terms of period and placement. I like the onlookers on the bank. Not sure about the balloon, though, it doesn’t look real and distracts from the drama. The far boat should really be smaller, given its distance from the front one – or maybe the harpoonist is a giant? I prefer the version without the canvas. I enjoyed Ant Snell’s whimsical blow-up whale, put in scale by the boy with the fishing net. He is rather large compared to the man in the boat, though. And the whale has a reflection! Excellent. Made me laugh. Every time DavidMac says a job is “simple” I know it’s going to be good, and this week’s is no exception. A tremendous draining of the river, with a well-placed array of workmen (and even a workwoman, although as she’s holding a clipboard I assume she’s a workforewoman). Really glad you were able to use the actual skeleton. Cones on the mud, tape strung between them… can’t fault this one, David. Top marks. Well, I never expected that from Mariner. Leaving the original India Board story beneath shows just how well you’ve replaced the top story – although I’d suggest Clarendon for the body font: it has less difference between the thick and thin strokes, which is why it was more suitable for early mass printing. And I’m afraid you lose marks for using feet and inches marks rather than proper curly quotes. I like the fact that all the boatmen are looking the other way in the image – a narrow escape for Orca! As David has pointed out, you’ve brought the sun out too. Glorious. But shouldn’t the boatmen have reflections? Ah - there it is in the amended version. Much better. A fun animation from michael sinclair, with flowing river and bobbing whale. I do wish you’d find a way to make a seamless blend with the clouds, though, to avoid a jump when the scene restarts. |

Thanks Steve. Affinity Photo doesn't have Clarenon. I settled for Bodoni MT, whcih, as you noticed, is not perfect. Text manipulation is something I tried for the first time this week, and, wow!, what a lot of bells and whistles there are!. I thought there was something a bit odd about my curly quotes, but I let that go. It was all very illuminating. |

Thank you Steve, I just did a remake without the balloon, reduced the rear boat size - looks much better. |

Thanks Steve. I would have liked to spend more time on this one but … too many things going on. It would be unfair to pick out any entry in particular but I was most impressed with this week’s entries 👏👏👏 _________________ |

Thanks Steve. I really enjoyed doing this one. The woman in hard hat and the others are not workmen they are university and museum staff inspecting the find. This was implied in the text above but I think you focus very much on the image .... which indeed is what we want you to do! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
