That's the first time I've seen a "Dolly Zoom" or "Vertigo Zoom" used in an animation!

The most recent upgrade to the software included the ability to more easily group animations within an animation… this was an experiment on my part to see how that might be used in future challenges.

Very interesting.

Its a tiny microcosm of a dolly zoom.

The dolly zoom, first used by Hitchcock in "Vertigo", involves dollying in physically towards the subject while simultaneously zooming out to keep the subject a constant size. The effect is that, without the foreground subject changing substantially, the background changes size dramatically relative to it.

Yes, I've used the zoom effect before, but not quite so effectively. In a looping gif animation it has a forward and backward pulsing sensation that you would not see if the scene was 'cut' to the next take after a single direction movement.

Frank. That's hilarious. Well done.

And many thanks everyone for your comments.

Re: Challenge 1008: The water fountain
First to dive into the fountain this week was DavidMac, with the addition of a cute new creature who fits rather well into those surroundings. The onlooker is especially well chosen. The bathing beauty is taking a most convincing shower – and I see you’ve resurrected a policeman from the 1950s to wave his truncheon at her (oo-er, missus, as Frankie Howerd would say). Nicely done. Is the woman porous? She seems to be absorbing a lot of water. I thought you wouldn’t be able to resist adding a gnome or two, and that pair are glorious: not just the bikini gnome, but the one taking a bath, who fits so well into the scene it’s hard to believe he wasn’t there in the first place.

Plenty of spraying water from GKB, and the animated version is very enjoyable. I like the added fish, and the splendid rippling effect on the water. And of course the splashy soundtrack does help. The cascading water in the no paddling version is certainly plentiful. I like the trail the shark’s fin leaves on the surface.

Lots of spray from lwc, although it doesn’t seem to be bothering that perching pigeon. I like the arm movement of the guitar player. And is that a couple from photoshop.london in the background? And we have a moose! A lonely fountain no more. The fire breathing version is really quite terrifying. Those rising sparks really make it, don’t they. I found the pulsating background in the dolly zoom entry truly disturbing to watch, with its nightmarish transformations. The butterflies, and especially the canary, do lighten the mood.

I have to say the fountain looks rather good in Ant Snell’s pond. The pouring water is really effective, I like the way it splashes over the surfaces. And you’ve even got a reflection in the water. Splendid.

A complete reimagining of the scale from tooquilos, who has turned the fountain into a fantasy castle. Beautifully done, the rope ladders integrating well. A really glorious animated version – I especially like the vanishing fountain after the fairy casts her spell.

Plenty of horror in Ben Boardman’s scary entry, with venomous beasties climbing all over the place. The woman in the foreground sets the mood well, and I like the running figures in the background. Not entirely sure what the starburst represents – is it too intrusive?

A truly wonderful fountain display from Frank, and the dancing frogs are hilarious. I like that the top frog is out of sync with the others. Best of all is the water drops landing on the front of the screen, which distort the view perfectly. Top job, Frank.

Thanks Steve,

Its a meteor shower. From the book/movie Day Of the Triffids.

Yes, both couples in the first entry are from photoshop.london.

The moose entry is by DavidMac, not me...

Thanks Steve!

They belong together. Audrey, the man eating plant, and Rick Moranis (back view) are both from the 1986 Frank Oz movie "Little Shop of Horrors".

They were an afterthought when I had run out of anything better to do. But they do fit well. A lot of fun creating the splashes on the gnome and spilling out of the tub.

The lonely fountain by the way was not Loyd. I nicked his trademark moose and used it to my own ends.

I enjoyed this one much better than I expected.

Thanks Steve.
