Yes, David, great work from you again this week. Reminds me of a quote "If you love your work you will never work a day" |

Re: Chapter 1060: Don't get Cross(ness)
David, after much searching for a suitable monster I finally found a thoroughly miserable looking being at https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/662099582759065811/ A big thank you to Joyce Linsemeyer. ![]() There was a problem with light direction. It suddenly occurred to me that if he were facing a mirror then the reflected light from the window would make him look more believable. All I needed to do then was to clean him up a bit and give him a better colour. Jane Asher, 1960’s girlfriend of Paul McCartney had a small part with Peter Cushing in a Hammer horror movie. I saw it. I think it was called ‘Frankenstein must be destroyed’. She was a very good looking red-head who made friends with the monster in the film. I realized that adding a human to my picture would bring out the size of the monster so I found a girl’s picture on the net and put her close to him. ![]() The mirror, left hand wall and RH pillar came from the net. I rebuilt the windows from scratch using vector graphics. Same for the box except for the door and clothes from the net. The floor I created from scratch using vector graphics. The brick wall was was constructed using a brick texture from the net. The outside world is an old photograph I took not far from where I live. Have I missed anything? I don’t think so. Hope I haven’t bored anybody. |

Well, you certainly didn’t bore me Michael. I always like to see how others approach and tackle their images and yours is excellent _________________ Why is it that all the contestants in the ‘Miss Universe’ contest are all from Earth? |

Thank you Michael. Very interesting. I remember Jane Asher very well. A very attractive girl. You have managed to give him and your girl a much more graphic quality. It's very subtle. I know you like to do that and think of your images as paintings ... just as I like to do the opposite and make mine a 'real' as possible. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

You mention vector graphics. Did you end up getting Affinity Designer as well as Photo? _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Yes, I bought it a couple of years ago, found out I didn't need it and deleted it a couple of months ago. Affinity Photo, like Photoshop, has its own variety of vector graphics (Shapes). |

Yes I don't use Illustrator for the same reason. With Designer it was much easier because you can edit an open Affinity file in both Designer and Photo at the same time side by side. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Chapter 1060: Don't get Cross(ness)
First to enter the pumping station this week was Ant Snell, with a complete Frankenstein makeover. I like all the stuff on the table on the left, and great lighting on the monster coming out of the cupboard. The doctor himself is rather portly! Good to see the interior of Papplewick, it’s most impressive. I enjoyed dwindt's follow-up to last week’s defecating monkey, now shamefacedly creeping into the outhouse. Curious choice of shadow direction, though, given that the cupboard is clearly lit from the right. I bet you didn’t think you’d use your custom-built crap-covered woman again so fast. The bride entry is really splendid, with beautiful lighting (I like the stained glass in the window) and that pipework really makes it. The sarcophagus fits perfectly on the right hand side. Outstanding. A homage to Young Frankenstein from lwc, with Feldman, Wilder et al on fine spooky form. I think I prefer the relative calm of the Peter Cushing version, and although I like the lightning I’m not sure about the firefly in the cabinet. I like the sequence in which Peter Cushing meets his grisly end, at the hands of a monster who in closeup is more doleful than I remember. The flooded entry is very nicely done, although I’d question the clarity of the liquid bearing in mind what’s likely spurting out of that pipe. Oh, and the turtle. The squid does work well, although I’ve yet to see one with five tentacles – starfish, maybe? I don’t recognise the man coming out of tooquilos's cupboard, although I do like the fireplace and the converted column. A splendid opening scene in the animated version, and the conversion of the man into The Mummy was an unexpected twist. A truly extraordinary mashup of movie themes! Beautifully done. I never saw the 2015 movie, but having seen DavidMac's entry I feel no need to. Everything is here, from the especially grisly (if somewhat waxen) monster to the cowering Radcliffe (as Igor, I imagine) and the altogether more aristocratic James McAvoy as the doctor. That’s a neatly extended background, too. Terrific sparks, and the added levers all look good. Minor point, frankly so minimal it’s barely worth mentioning (but I’m going to anyway): all those lamps have been photographed head-on, but we’re viewing them from below. It really only takes a couple of seconds to bend them up: ![]() Thanks for the link to the film location company – fascinating. I spent much too long browsing that site. Your janitorial entry is really splendid, particularly the shelving on the interior of the cabinet. I really like how everything here slots into place – the sleeping guards (particularly the one tilting back in his chair), the mop leaning against the column, the stack of boxes with the snacks. Very tasty. My favourite part of the workbench entry is the series of brains on the bench behind, neatly lit up by the ray of sunlight. The monster looks especially grisly here. The lightning bolt entry is impressive, with great viewing angles on Radcliffe and the monster. I was going to mention the awkward angle of McAvoy, but seeing as you’re spending the weekend sharpening knives I might just let that pass… I’ve been trying to interpret the thing crawling out of GKB's cabinet, but I can’t make a lot of sense of it (other than knowing I wouldn’t want to meet it on a dark night). I like the column conversion with its floating brain, though. I’m also wondering why the fire looks so two-dimensional. Aha! I see from the animated version that it’s a dragon – and a very animated dragon it is too. I like the way it’s going for the brain, but as Frankenstein myths go this one is rather out on a limb. Cool bubbles, though, and the refraction through the glass column works well. A truly miserable monster in the I want brain animation, and rather sad to see he doesn’t get it in the end. Are you doing your own voice work these days? An atmospheric entry from Frank, with a bandage-wrapped monster just starting to emerge from the cabinet. An extraordinary animated version, full of special effects and a remarkably well animated series of monsters. Wow! Splendid work. So glad about the nursing home news, and best of luck with the stents. DavidMac has just sharpened his knives, if that would help. I was wondering how Mariner would approach this week’s Challenge, but I certainly never expected this: a despondent monster, upset either by his reflection or because none of the clothes would fit him. A truly remarkable image, Michael, beautifully composed. I was going to question the shadow on the wall behind them until I realised it’s caused by sunlight reflecting off the mirror. You do think of everything! A splendid week. |

Thanks Steve. It was waaaay too hot in front of my MAC to do any more detailed work so there was very little finesse. If you want to believe that it was me doing the Frankenstein voice who am I to disabuse you? _________________ Have you ever noticed that all the instruments designed to detect intelligent life are pointing away from the Earth? |

Re: Chapter 1060: Don't get Cross(ness)
There is an incredible dearth of photos from this movie. Perhaps because it was so underwhelming. I did something which I know Ant has also done as well. Sometimes, when you can't find a character from a movie or TV you can find replicas of them. That's what I had to do here. Both my monsters are derived from miniature plastic replicas. I was able get away with it (sort of) because he's a flawed creation anyway. .
Sometimes you spot things that I really kick myself for missing. This is one!
Ha Ha Ha I just took a picture of our household cupboard here at home! ![]()
Mine too!
Same problem of lack of available images. I did roll his eyes up as far as I could, but it didn't help a lot. As for knives ..... I suspect, as a sculptor and woodworker, you are a man who understands the simple deep satisfaction of good tools well kept. I have used these wonderful knives, brought here from Tokyo and Hong Kong, for over forty years - a couple even longer. I have treated and kept them with the respect they deserve and they are as sharp as the day I bought them. What I love about them is their sheer simplicity. Form derived from function. They are top quality professional chef's knives but without any of the jazzy brouhaha of western super-knives. Just high quality simple steel blades set into plain unvarnished wooden handles. You really couldn't get more modest or unassuming looking. There is something quite timeless about them. ![]() Oh dear ........... enthusiasts on their own subject can be very boring. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
