David, you can’t do Corrie without mentioning Ena Sharples and her iconic hairnet. ![]() ![]() |

Re: Challenge 1062: Hair today
That's true! Her hairnet epitomised the early years! But, although she is inseparable from the early black and white 60's Corrie, she was already an anachronism, stylistically out of date and old fashioned. Somehow the more classically sixties Hilda and Bette seemed to fit Steve's dryer better. But good to know that there is someone out there who understands what I am on about ............. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

There are at least five things I missed. I expect Steve will find them. |

Re: Challenge 1062: Hair today
First to sit under the hair dryer this week was Ben Boardman, with a refreshing take on Valentine’s Day. I like Melania’s expression, and the wind-sucked hair on Trump – but that does appear to be bulletproof glass! I greatly enjoyed the car conversion, a really funny piece of work executed with wit and charm. For added realism, though, get rid of those tiny tables and chairs. The aliens in Frank's entry look at home in that green chair, and that’s a suitably odd control panel. If it were me, I’d miss out the alien in the middle; it’s too aware of the camera, and breaking the fourth wall spoils the effect. It’s also a little scrawny compared to the others. An entertaining no brain activity entry, very neatly assembled. I was wondering, though, why you chose to have Trump facing out of the frame, rather than into it. Of course, Edward Scissorhands was the obvious choice for this image, and lwc was right there with it. Beautifully located, though, it fits immaculately into this new environment. Very nicely done, excellent shadows. The lawnmower entry is charmingly slow, but the real cleverness here lies in the multiple scrolling backgrounds: the road and grass edge and the two layers of crops really do give the impression of movement. The turning of the mower wheels is exactly right. And am I right in thinking the cycle wheels spin as well? Perfect job. A fun surplus junk store – glad those people are still coming in useful. I like the chilling aliens, particularly the cute movement on the dog. The alien in the chair does seem to be getting rather over-excited. The sandstorm entry is nicely put together, and really the only major issue is the relative scale of the two robots. All you have to do is make the nearer one larger: ![]() Great moody lighting on the Rodin tribute, although he does look rather constipated. Maybe he just does. A new take on Metropolis from DavidMac, the chair repurposed with plenty of cables. Interesting groups of ellipses: while the lower one works fine, there’s something about the top one that doesn’t quite ring true. It could be that the ring as seen through the glass helmet should be less visible? I do like the concept, though. The thing that baffles me here is how you managed to find such a high resolution robot: not from movie stills, I’m guessing. I was never a fan of Coronation Street, although I do of course recognise the characters. I’m pretty sure I could play the theme tune, come to think of it. An interesting entry from Mariner, with a little girl posing on the chair. And “little” really is the operative word here: by my reckoning she’d be about 60cm tall, which would make her head tiny by any standards. The hair salon entry is a truly gorgeous piece of work: perfect fitting and arrangement of characters, excellent repurposing of the chair as a stool. But – oh! Five things you missed, eh? Well, if it’s nitpicking you’re after… the far legs on the attendant’s chair should be slightly higher to make them further away from the front legs; the mirrors on the right aren’t really in perspective, they just get smaller; and, er, that’s about it. What are the three things I’ve missed? I was wondering what GKB was doing in a hair salon, until I saw the animated version. Ouch! Glad you had time for this one. A seriously entertaining rocket chair from dwindt, with a terrific expression and a brilliant choice of character. I like the way the dome has been repurposed. Absolutely perfect, a brilliant job. Of course, Ant Snell is right: you can’t have Corrie without Eno Sharples. I like how the chair has been integrated into this hair salon, everything neatly tied together by the static noise. |

Re: Challenge 1062: Hair today
Thanks, Steve. My first picture was just a quickie.
As you say, Steve, nitpicking: The big RH mirror should probably reflect the woman sitting on the LHS. The rollers on the hair dryer should have drop shadows. Isabel May’s thighs should have a shadow. The floor planks under the far windows should be narrower. On the whole I liked my work on this entertaining and difficult picture. Keep up the good work Steve. |

Get rid of the tiny tables & chairs - Thanks Steve, I missed the obvious. I should have known, the background shot in Portofino was mine. Enjoyed the challenge, thank you. |

Re: Challenge 1062: Hair today
Ooooof!. ![]() Mirror: I think no. It would reflect just beyond her. Rollers: Yes but it's very picky. Not a problem that offends. Thigh shadow: Again a very picky yes but the lighting is very soft and flat - you don't really miss it. Floor planks: Yes I'll grant you that one. Vanishing point is missing. In my case, even when the subject is obviously impossible, I still want my images to look real and convincing, so such technicalities can become significant. But you've always wanted your work to be viewed as an artwork. In this context it's impact and effect that count - technicalities of the kind you are pointing out are secondary. I know you're a perfectionist Michael but don't be too hard on yourself. Your image garnered compliments it merited. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

The rotation of the bicycle wheels is just an illusion. Making the robot larger in the "sandstorm" does help. An interesting challenge, thanks Steve! |

Re: Challenge 1062: Hair today
I replied here yesterday but it seems to have vanished into the mysterious void that my posts here do from time time.
I agree. I played with those rings a lot and never quite felt right about them. I think it's partly because it's such a patently false idea anyway. I did because it's referencing the movie.
Head and upper torso are original. The rest is multiple sources: movie museum replicas, example images from 3D models, and even a costume. The only profile legs I could find were standing so I had to bend them and create imaginary knees myself.
Me neither ...... fan that is. But I discovered to my surprise that I could hear it in my head quite clearly. Another on that proved more fun that I expected. Thanks Steve. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |
