That's fun Frank! It seems there are some core principles at work here. Thanks Frank, we're in the midst of a heat wave that's supposed to last another couple of weeks. I can't take the heat anymore, so I'm staying inside with little else to do. |

First to go back to school this week was Ben Boardman, with the Harry Potter cast surrounding a magical map. There’s something a little odd about the position of the map, though: its shadow suggests it’s further up the street, with the wizards looking at something else several feet in front of it. I like all the lit windows, but it does typify the AI problem of just adding too much detail and not knowing when to stop. That said, it is a very pretty image. That looks like a young Boris Johnson in DavidMac's satirical entry, with a monkish Dominic Cummings looking on. I like the concept, but why is Boris so low in the scene? And has Cummings’ head become detached from his neck? I don’t recognise either of the characters in the enchantress image, although the plume of smoke from her mouth does portend a major event in the offing. (But you do gain points for the Pavlovian Response gag.) Ah! Helen Mirren! Of course. Though sadly I never saw Excalibur. Her armour is, as you say, interesting. A step back in time for lwc, with a very fine scratched photo featuring a remarkably cleaned-up street. The boy to the right of the tall one is clearly younger and so smaller, but is the boy to the left a midget? That’s a very cute frog, although he seems to be missing a wand. I do like how the background wobbles in the wizard/orb image, and especially appreciate the detail of the snake feet. The staff-wielding lizard is fun, with his hovering friend. The robe-wearing lizard wizards are splendid, the murky lighting adding huge value. I like the one coming through the manhole cover. That’s a very elfin wizardess (it seems inappropriate to call her a witch). Why are they all standing so far apart? And of course – Minions! And that’s a very grumpy lizard wizard. A touch of politics from GKB – a Brexit mess, indeed. Of course the perspective of the jar is wrong: we’re looking down on the top, and should be looking up at it. A five minute fix is all it took: 
I like how dwindt has reverted to an older and simpler bridge, adding the river to the side of it. Surprising how both Harry and Hermione are so recognisable from the back. It might have been better to remove the traffic signs, though. I greatly enjoyed The real wizards, a beautifully composed image. There’s so much detail here, including the scaffolding around one of the towers and the drawing on the table. And is that a half-eaten apple? Magnificent. And thanks for the explanation. Good to see The Jam in Ant Snell’s entry, bringing back memories. There’s some odd stuff going on here, though: the relative scales and positions of the three band members seems rather at odds with the perspective of the scene. The body in the foreground, of course, is looking in the wrong direction – and don’t Etonians still wear white tie and tails? A magical house from Frank, neatly obscuring Windsor Castle, its position making the traffic signs somewhat obsolete. I like the lighting, and that mist cleverly conceals the join. Mariner has gone for the full wizarding experience, with Tolkien meeting Rowling: I wonder why no one has thought of this pairing before. The No Carts sign neatly replaces the original signage, although I’m not sure why you removed the lamppost. I do, however, greatly appreciate the effort that went into opening the windows on the left. You’ve brought the sunshine in so convincingly that at first I didn’t notice you’d done it: the play of light and shade is perfect. The only thing I’m not sure about is why you replaced the cobbles: your new ones don’t seem to follow the angle of the road like the originals did. Plenty of twinkly lights from tooquilos, with Hogwarts replacing Windsor Castle in the distance.. I like the wealth of detail: the broomstick, the owl over the castle, and of course all the new signage. The wizard in the animated version is cute, although I don’t really understand all his gestures. I still can’t quite make sense of the fire-breathing coiled thing in the middle! Doesn’t look like a phoenix. _____ Great work this week. Denis and David, thanks for the compliments about HotChiPs! |

Steve, after enlarging your picture to 4000px x 3000px the first thing I did was to find another which was a close match but with some sunshine and shadows in it. Having found one it took a while to bend and twist it into the shape of the original. The cobbles were especially difficult to change. All part of the fun! The modern signs in the original had to go, as I wanted to move back in time a couple of hundred years. So, no double yellow lines, no modern road signs. The lamp was missing in the replacement picture and I decided to leave it out, as it must be fairly recent. The overall definition of the original shop signs was poor, so I spent a lot of time tracking down similar signs and changing the wording. The bridge was a bit unclear, the Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa needed more clarity, and I couldn't resist changing the flag flying above the castle. The shadows are less than perfect, especially Gandalf's, but I did my best. Most people would agree that it is hard to imagine shadows, you have to use trial and error to some extent. Of course I searched for suitable wizards and, at one point, I had Lord Voldeemort in there, but his black clothing didn't fit, so I used Gandalf instead, along with Gollum and Hermione. The flying witch on the brromstick was an afterthought.. Steve I just loved doing this picture, which took me a whole week and I cannot undestand why anyone over seventy would want to bang out "quickies" as if they were in a competition. Keep up the good work. |

Boris low in scene because he is small (5'8") and the road has a pronounced downward slope as you approach camera, but point taken, I have perhaps overdone it. Cummings is indeed a mistake.
Points for spotting it too. I thought that had gone over everybody's' heads.
It was quite 'um .......... memorable.
