Re: Challenge 1117: The Duck Tour
Here is an updated version, propeller rotating and some overall different methods to animate the water, lighting, etc. of course it's no longer a 'quicky'.
You will need to watch it loop several times to get a feel for the various effects. |

That's lovely, Loyd. I love how you got the prop turbulence cork screwing away. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Thanks Mariner. We'll all have that song in our heads today. When I typed, "we'll all," above, I nearly continued, "live in a yellow submarine." I had to check myself...lol. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Challenge 1117: The Duck Tour
The animations were fun to make this week, but I have to say that this was the most satisfying.

Re: Challenge 1117: The Duck Tour
Yes it looks somehow very toy like. Looking at your animations of Dennis' image, it is interesting that we almost always follow the convention of rippling stuff under water even though we all know perfectly well that that is not the case (unless viewed through the surface). The problem, of course, is that it works so well! It's only boring old pedants like me who get uppity. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1117: The Duck Tour
I fully understand your point David, but it was quick and easy. Having finished with any additional entries for this week, I had some extra time this morning and reworked Dennis’ original one last time. This one also conveys a sense of movement, but with a little more real-world edits as opposed to total ‘fantasy land’. The silly shark was removed for this one as it wasn’t in Dennis’ original image.

WOW!! Well you've been a busy boy Michael ......... and all of them interesting and different from your usual very 'considered' and quite formal style. City limits is a BIG surprise ........... _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1117: The Duck Tour
David thanks. I am a rather inconsiderable and informal person, sometimes even a little boring and I paint according to my mood at the time. My next picture was going to be called "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" ("Picture yourself on a boat on a river..."), but I was struggling with the idea and ran out of time. |

Re: Challenge 1117: The Duck Tour
First to take to the water this week was Ant Snell, with a truly surreal vision. I like the duck feet, but it’s the head of the man on the front that does it for me. Not sure about the shadow – why doesn’t it reach the length of the boat? (And I was indeed tempted by the amphibious vehicle.) It looks like Ben Boardman (and, presumably, Mrs Ben) have been on one of these things IRL. The Captain Cook Tour bus is beautifully done, with just the right amount of water foaming around the wheels and a perfect reflection. Only issue is that the bus is behind the men – push them further back in the scene so they can be looking at it. A labour of love from DavidMac, having rebuilt the bottom of the boat and added the wheels. Beautifully done: those horizontal lines make perfect sense, and the rippling reflection is just right. I imagine the Union Jack would complete beneath the water surface, but I’ll forgive you for not attempting it. Is that Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry standing at the back? If so, (a) why, and (b) why doesn’t he have any legs? I don’t recognise the Arabic building the boat is dreaming of, but I like the speedboat. I see you’re resolutely sticking to the water from now on. A speeding duck boat from lwc, complete with duck figurine on the bow (see, I know my nautical terms). I was going to complain that the wheel wasn’t turning, but then of course it wouldn’t, would it. Except when it’s on land, of course. I like the multiple layers of scrolling scenery, they give a good perspective effect. The breakdown is funny, with the steam coming out of the top. Shouldn’t the flashing roof match the lightning strikes? The hovercraft is outstanding, from the rippling skirt to the rippling water beneath, and the fan (I assume it;s a fan) on the top. I really like this one. The flying boat is tremendous – and you’ve even bothered to make the propellers disturb the water beneath. Great attention to detail. I like it flying past the castle, but the depth of field effect doesn’t really make sense with the subject at this distance. I enjoyed your animation of dwindt’s yellow submarine, although of course the part sticking up above the surface shouldn’t be rippling. Second version is better, and even better without the shark. I like how you’ve placed it in the window of a toyshop. Great job emptying the boat of passengers, that must have taken ages. Did you make the windsortoys.com card in the window? Somehow I expected GKB to employ a rubber duck – I’ve seen them crop up in your work before. Nicely done, except the boat could really do with a reflection that matches the duck that’s pulling it. Some very fine tank tracks from dwindt, giving a very industrial look to the boat. Why is the background so out of focus? I don’t think that’s photographically possible with the boat at this distance. Ah – that's better. Didn’t like the dof effect. I really enjoyed it leading the ducklings out of the water! And the Yellow Submarine is a glorious conversion. I can’t imagine how you mapped the original’s decorations onto the side of that model. The upside down duck is a real bonus. High drama from Mariner, with the boat cascading over a waterfall to the sound of Tina Turner… then turning to the side to Gerry Rafferty, before coming in to land courtesy of Tina Turner again. This last one is my favourite out of a very strong trio. I can’t tell how much of these is original photos, and how much pure Mariner… and that’s always a good sign. |

Well done Michael! Now we know how to get you going. At the thought of Sgt Peppers, you let your hair down, grew a ducktail, pulled out the bell bottoms and tie-dye t-shirt, draped a peace sign around the neck and produced 3 lovely images whilst aiming for a fourth. Well done! _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Challenge 1117: The Duck Tour
Well done everybody! Steve asked; "I can’t imagine how you mapped the original’s decorations onto the side of that model." I cut the decal through the middle, warped the top and bottom separately according to the profile of the sub, merged the layers and painted them together with the smudge brush. I used the smudge brush to extend the flag over the rudder etc. I pattern defined the sub, used the filter photostat option and embossed it over the image of the sub to bring out the seams and rivets in the decal. _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

Re: Challenge 1117: The Duck Tour
Strangely that wasn't laziness. I felt it looked complete and correctly proportioned as it was and to extend it would look bizarre.
(a) The yellow school bus scene. He's chasing the serial killer Scorpio (plaster on nose in the front). (b) Some dumb photoshopper not doing his job properly.
It's the Atlantic hotel in Dubai (the only place I found even less desirable than Vegas). I think the dream is less about the hotel than those two big Merlin engines! Thanks Steve. I had a bit of a job getting to grips with this one.
