Re: Contest 50: The first half century
Steve- I hope that you have not taken my comments as a slur on your site. I really, truthfully did not mean it to be taken in that manner. What you do here is amazing, and I dont know of any other author who takes such pains to help his readers! I only mentioned the perspective matter because I want a copy of CS2, and because I really am sick of drawing perspective lines (badly in the most case!) Glen- I also hope you dont think that I was implying that you make out you are better than us mere mortals. I only chose your name because I know what you do for a living and therefore a helpful marker for my comment! BTW flattering me with saying I am in my 20's will not make me give away the truth Have to say that this board has been lacking this banter for a while, its good (well partly) to see it back! Atomic where are you?? _________________ "Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. Re: Contest 50: The first half century
I like Steve's challenges, and I hope he keeps them coming. I haven't found them boring. The Friday Challenge is a creative outlet for me, and if I offended anyone by submitting too many ideas, please forgive this tired old hack. I love making montages. I know this challenge is for a real prize, but I wish we could post our ideas throughout the week and not wait for Thursday. I like seeing different images every day. I like seeing the different solutions to the same problem. I haven't seen anyone copy or steal an idea. And if they did, it's of no importance. I never thought of this forum as a head-to-head competition. To me the challenge is a personal one. The craft of retouching and creating photo-montages is tough to master. Adobe improves Photoshop with every release, but owning it doesn't make you a great retoucher, just as owning Winsor-Newton brushes doesn't make you a great artist. I'll send my native Photoshop files to anyone who asks if it helps them improve their skill. Steve makes a living creating finished, high-resolution montages under tight deadlines, and we are fortunate he but his craft and skill in a book and web site. Anyway, to me the greatest challenge in this forum is spelling. |

To add my tuppence ha'penny: The challenge has certainly become more competitive, which has detracted from its purpose a little- as has been said in the discussion. User titles are a just bit of fun (is anyone going to introduce themselves at a social gathering as Joe Bloggs 'Cool Compositor'?). This forum, like most others, has the facility to assign titles depending on the amount of posts made by any one person, these change incrementally and can be on any theme, after a while, nobody really pays much attention to them. I'm not going to voice an opinion on whether they should stay or go. At the end of the day, the forum is a useful companion to the book, where Steve and the other members can discuss, assist and generally have a bit of light relief from the daily struggle. There are many photoshop contest sites out there to satisfy the competitive streak. Let's keep this forum calm, the challenges should definitely remain, it's good to get the grey matter working! Happy Birthday Maiden and Tabitha! _________________ It must be Thursday, I never could get the hang of Thursdays |

Re: Contest 50: The first half century
I think your images have been exceptional and outstanding, and I hope you didn't think I was having a go at you personally because that certainly isn't the case, Neal. Perhaps things are better as they are, I was just expanding upon the idea of everybody submitting their entry on a Thursday that Glen first raised, as that seem to already be a bone of contention for Einstein I was trying to sound out a better way of people submitting their entry without the claims of plagarism or lots and lots of repeat entries. But perhaps I'm thinking too hard about a solution and not enough about what a great site we have already here. I suppose if it ain't broken don't fix it is the motto of the day and I hope people don't think I was just out to cause trouble here, because that's the last thing I want. Re: Contest 50: The first half century
Becky, I'm so glad you're not angry at me. It would kill me if you were. I miss your entries. I wish you had more time to create your art. There's nothing wrong using this forum a sounding board for new ideas. If you or anyone has an idea to improve this site, I'd like to read about it. What I like about this site is the speed it loads and people who participate in it. I visit Worth1000 from time to time, and I hate how long it takes to load. And some of the people who participate are nasty and evil. Their critiques are harsh. I like David's comments. Can you change my title to "underpaid"? |

Re: Contest 50: The first half century
Nothing worse than a snooty harsh critique which goes back to what I was saying in the other thread. A Critique isn't necessarily harsh criticism but a constructive assessment of a piece of work which is helpful and full of useful advice. A Critique should never be negative but should seek to be helpful. Criticism is often negative and designed to belittle and put down. If I have some advice for someone I usually qualify that advice with an example or demonstration of what I mean. Steve has a brilliant manner about him when helping us through a difficult image problem, he's not condesending nor overly praising which has made him a great mentor to myself and from the feedback all of the people who visit this site as well as read his books. I know about having my confidence completely destroyed from a few careless comments, I almost gave up art altogether when my early stuff was sniped at, I thought I'd never amount to very much from the comments from my peers, luckily there are always a few really genuine and nice people out there who helped me along. In that sense I've been lucky, but there are many not so fortunate and it riles me to see someone come down with personal comments and rudeness upon another person's heartfelt hard work. That's my personal bug-bear. Becky _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |

Can someone please PM me with an idea for this challenge, I had some good ones but they don't seem workable. _________________ Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker. |

Re: Contest 50: The first half century
What a joyless place the Friday Challenge forum has become this week !! Even when I have no time to enter myself, I enjoy checking in every other day to see what others, esp Neal and Glen, are submitting. I have never seen anyone copy another's idea, and if they did - WHO CARES??? You'd think the prize was a car! As for Multiple entries - wheres the harm ? Neal's second treehouse entry (Wacko Jacko) had me laughing for about 5 minutes !! _________________ |

It's Thursday! And my ideas is this: After 50 Friday Challenges, Steve's office must be a mess. All those objects have got to be pilling up. A big thank you Paul! I appreciate your complement and placing my name in the same sentence with Glen's. I admire his work and sharp wit. |

Hello all ! Not been on for a while, where did all the images go? Glen yours looks great as usual. Looking forward to seeing all of your great images. Maiden I know what you mean about the new job. I have recently started a new job and I am getting up at 5.30am and not getting back home till 8.30pm. Not had much photoshop time for a while. _________________ Those are my principles. First off thanks Paul, Neal and Chris (sorry mate can't quite get my head around 'Pooch' yet) for your comments. Really enjoyed this challenge and looking forward to trying to fit 100 in next year ! Neal, great mess in the office. After keeping some of the polish Steve so kindly found for me I spent a good few days trying to get a mirror like finish, aint quite there yet and I can never get rid of all the smudges but... _________________ most of the lack of sunshine in our lives is caused by us standing in our own shadow |

Excellent work there guys, I see you managed to fit in the bean this time round Glen? Heres my attempt at what the Caplin household would look like after all these challenges... managed 40/50, as fitting in all those landscapes made my trial versions look like scenes from Monty Python! Have to agree that this board has been looking very dull with the images not being posted until Thursday. Can we go back to posting earlier? Excellent image Tabitha - must be your age, which is ...... (for a small price I won't reveal, but I have counted the objects). Really like the pinched fish I only suggested posting on thursday for THIS challenge, come tomorrow morning it'll be back to normal I would guess. _________________ most of the lack of sunshine in our lives is caused by us standing in our own shadow |
