Re: Contest 172: What could be better than an iPhone?
Mostly I took the view that rules were made to be broken when the occasion demanded it. Maybe it had an engine shut down and it was climbing slowly.
I never actually controlled a flying carpet going into Gatwick so I can't help on that one.
Steve has lots of great birthday pressies. What on earth are we going to get him for Christmas??

You've only just discovered?
Never found any good reason to be sensible. I might try it when I grow up just to see what it's like.

Growing older is inevitable. Growing up is optional!

Or, as my daughter says, "If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun"!

Happy Birthday. It was mine yesterday as well. Didn't know what to buy at short notice so I've downloaded some pictures of Paris onto your iPhone for you

Re: Contest 172: What could be better than an iPhone?
Many thanks for the birthday wishes - and it's great to see so many inspiring ideas. For those who are interested: the iPhone is every bit as gorgeous as they claim, and more so. It's the most astounding piece of technology I've ever laid hands on, due partly to the beauty of the hardware but mainly to the amount of thought and effort that's gone into every tiny aspect of the user interface. You really have to try one to see what I mean.

First up this week was vicho, with an inspiring idea: an iPhone that projects a touch-screen version of Photoshop. A cool idea, but that screen shot is from the Windows version of Photoshop - surely Steve Jobs would never allow such a thing!

We've seen Steve Mac's Norman Rockwell painting in the forum before - and it's a fantastic adaptation. The drawing and the reflection fit perfectly, of course - but reproducing the back of my head is a real tour de force. And that Wacom Cintiq frame tucked beneath the pictures on the easel is excellent. Looks like I need to lose a little weight, though.

An intriguing workstation from Charlotte Babb: midway between a dentist's chair and a medieval torture device. But that's a good bow, so thanks for gift wrapping it. I'm afraid I'm going to go on about perspective again: the horizon in this image is clearly shown, and that's where your vanishing point is - which means, the horizontals in the workstation should all point towards it. In other words, the horizontals above the horizon should be leaning down, not up. Cute diver, though, and I really must get some more woodworking videos.

It's not just the skilful montage that makes vibeke's entry so appealing, although there's plenty of cleverness here; but it's the arrangement of the scene, the lighting, the sense of anticipation that really adds to the atmosphere. Beautiful work - although I'd have passed the Burn tool over that hotspot at the top of the window.

I've been paintballing a couple of times, but Progenic's version of Skirmish looks too grisly for me! Especially when you read about the "hyper reality mode". Um... bit of a grisly face transplant there... I'll assume it's war paint!

There's a lot of real brilliance in james's entry, which really deserves repeated viewing. The slight wobble on take-off and landing, the shadow that moves with the wobble, expands and blurs on take-off are meticulously achieved. But I think the real genius comes in the way the spinning blades have been represented, both on the main rotor and on the rear. This must have been a huge amount of work - after all, these elements all have to be moved around the canvas as well as animated. Fantastic, James!

I've never needed a belly button brush, but Ben Mills's description makes it seem indispensable - crafted in yellow pseudoplastic, eh? I think a slight shadow beneath the brush would have helped a lot here, Ben - and perhaps a touch more shading on the brush itself?

GKB has taken a front-on view of the phone, and produced this clever perspective view by doubling it up to make the edge thicker - a good solution. It makes a fantastic cover, and of course the real hard work went into removing the original cover elements on this one. I like the reflection of the lettering, and the fact that this works "with an five fingered hand"!

Er... I'm not as old as Paul2007 seems to think! But this is a good piece of work: having drawn many credit cards over the years, I can attest to how difficult it is to make the embossed text, the chip and especially the hologram work well. I think I prefer the pigeon in the second entry - but the hologram here is just a little too pale.

A tasty cake from Neil O, complete with hand piped lettering. Using Layer Effects to create the embossing is often a good idea, but in this case shouldn't the light be coming from the candle? And I have to say, I don't share your taste in tablecloths...

Sky writing, panes trailing banners, balloons, fireworks, and a winking Paris Hilton - tooquilos has thrown the lot at this one! The way the smoke blurs away is well achieved, but there's an awkward moment when the plane pauses for us to read the banner. I don't think planes can do that!

A little daunted by the celestial powers maiden has bestowed - although Omnipotent Pro does sound like the operating system of choice. That's a very intriguing take on a globe, as well, and the way the glow has been tucked behind the fingers really gives it a sense of presence. Working on my omnipresence now.

I'm often astounded by the level of detail in Tom's entries, and this week's has really blown me away. You can tell he's a painter at heart: I don't think either Rembrandt or Joseph Wright of Derby could have painted a flame as realistic as this one. You really have to check out the detail to see this one in all its glory. Truly incredible work, Tom - and the slideshow is fascinating. (Loved the bogus Microsoft ad, by the way.)

A first entry this week from Jason, and it's a real cracker: combining my passions is clearly not that good an idea! I like the fact that the iPhone has a reflection in the saw blade, but you need to take another look at mirrors: they don't bend reflections round by 90 degrees! A simple mistake to make, but sometimes a glance at reality can help our imagination along. Welcome to the forum, Jason!

I think you'll find Brian Ruddock's treatment voids the warranty... a great cable, and the iPhone is neatly fitted into that mouth. Is that where an alligator's ears are, though? And is this a special mono version of the headset?

Instant woodworking from tank172 - straight from head to model! Now, that's a great way of avoiding having to tinker with all the nurbs and b-splines. It'll come, Chris, but maybe not in time for this year!

Beautiful work from Meltonian - that Pentax and video camera have been immaculately strapped onto the phone, and the rubber bands are most convincing. (There's something a little odd going on where the bottom of the camera lens meets the phone, but I'm too polite to point that out.) You're right about no video capture - but interface is often as important as functionality! Mind you, being a Windoze user, you wouldn't know about that.

I love the pre-wrapped Ultra Pen that Elliott's come up with - but it doesn't look to me like there's quite enough wrapping paper. I think the plastic wrap effect works well, Elliott: it is a difficult technique to get exactly right!

A graceful admission of defeat from 2bfree: but that's a neatly animated spin on the phone! And the translucent Play bar over my chin is a very nice touch.

Tremendous detail from Claude37: the iPhone rippled into a carpet shape, the fringe around the edge (which must have taken ages to draw), the Photoshop T-shirt, the wood shavings, the iPhone in my hand, the strapped-in guitar, and especially the carpet's trail into the distance. And then to reproduce that from below in the second entry - this is fantastic! Really great work, Claude, and certainly deserving of a title. So... I think it has to be Le Souris Superbe, from your website!

Most impressed with katew's private plane - and enough room to take the whole family! You've slotted that body in there very neatly, Kate - but I think I'd be too distracted by the view to work. A very subtle Eiffel Tower!

A destructive entry from joseantonio - and a case that's neatly cracking open, with translucent flying glass and a decent set of sparking fireworks in side. The downturned mouth is half of the expression, Jose, but you do need to push the eyebrows down as well to complete it.

Aha- a Paris Hilton wallpaper! Seems latchfordbob's entry is too distracting for everyday use, though - I seem to have five emails, two texts and a voicemail to deal with!

And to round the week off, a gloriously retro entry from Brian Garrison. Fantastic buttons, with great reflections - and the dial very nearly fits on the front...

I've really enjoyed this week. Thanks, everyone! And now, as it happens, I'm off to Paris for the weekend...

Re: Contest 172: What could be better than an iPhone?
Thanks Steve. The most difficult part of this one was making your face colouring match the model's hand. And the plane door was open, with a lot of bright light spilling in. So I created the right hand bulkhead, and cloned the wood effect thingy and the carpet. Well, it is called 'How to Cheat ...'!

Re: Contest 172: What could be better than an iPhone?
This week, Thank you twice Steve !
First I thank you for your remarks. I am happy that you appreciated details. The fringe around the carpet is a pattern made with Illustrator, placed on the flat carpet's imported image, then distorted with an Illustrator's envelope. Then back to Photoshop with some retouches. Not so long to do as you could imagine.
The waving trail was more difficult to do. I'll post soon a question in "Problems and solutions" about that point.

I thank you too for the title under my avatar, a "consecration"! I would suggest " Superbe souris " ou bien "LA souris superbe" which would be "more French", but my English is probably very funny for you all too. It is as you want and it is very nice.
I wish you to spend an excellent weekend in Paris, it is cold but the sun should be there to welcome you.
See you soon for the next Friday's contest.
Claude

Hmm. "La Souris" seems inappropriate! Are all French mice female? Well, let's go for Superbe Souris then!

Not Steve, all the French mices are not females. As for the elephants (except the size), we say " la souris femelle " either " la souris mâle ".
But " Superbe souris " goes to me very well!
Thanks !

Really enjoyed this challange. I did miss the top of the window, too busy trying to get everything else right.

Thanks Steve!
Actually the light was coming from the front of the cake (I guess from the camera flash?) I did add a little glow from the candle . It really wasn't a big candle. (BTW you never said what year you were born! :whistle Thanks again!

Yes the iPhone is remarkable.
I looked at one once and noticed that Safari/iPhone did not show flash in web pages.
Has this changed?
