I am familiar with the rule of thirds. Who wrote the rule? Sometimes a picture looks better with the horizon smack in the middle rather than the top third or the bottom third. Marty

Yes, of course, that's true. But a boat, now, that's a moving object: and you need to show either where it's going, or where it's come from. Simply showing where it is is neither one nor the other.

Thanks Steve. Actually, it's not the boat that's crooked, it's the car... I think it was shot with a wide angle lens and I had to adjust the perspective of the boat, thus the discrepency in perspective... I think!

Thanks Steve. Yep the shadow didn't work out too well - at least you didn't notice it was going the wrong way ......oops! Shouldn't have mentioned that!

Congratulations Brian but I'm not too sure I would enjoy my whisky with something like THAT floating in it.

mguyer:

The bronco picture is an excellent example of going somewhere. My little boat ended up smack in the middle, but I thought the dead alligator would draw the eye. I might shorten the rope and move the boat right.

The gator image is from the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Thanks as always Steve for your comments. I was guessing that the boat is flat bottomed so it could be in the shallows. Katew- just what are those globe things?

Thanks for the comments, I'll try to keep the 1/3rd it in mind next time. Also liked the new reflection by Hope Leslie Laust.

Thanks for your comment as always! Yes, it must be salted corals. Hard to find even here, most tins seem to contain miniature Sicilian ladies.

I'm faszinated by the fish packaging (acciughe are sardines) here - it rarely shows the product, but works well on the imagination.
