This is another one of "those challenges", where you could keep on messing around for ages.
Very difficult, and still not right

talking of spiders with missing legs - what about a 7 legged spider being worth $233.95

I think this is a solution to all our debts!

I had some problems posting my image...How do I size my image correctly? Someone? Help?
I've watched the Friday Challenges from afar for some time now, and I finally decided to accept the challenge myself!

go to file and select 'save for web and devices',
when you see your image, click on the image size button on the right. make sure it set to JPG. Set the size to somewhere between 800 and 900 pixels. Watch the new size, bottom left. Set the quality to around 50%. You may have to play around a little with the quality and the size, it varies depending on how much detail you have in your image.

Re: Contest 226: Mirror image
I've always found that my best work begins with me putting down the phone and thinking: "Now how the hell am I going to do that." It's the difficult tasks that inspire us and stretch us, and which improve our Photoshop skills more than any other.
This week's Challenge was tricky for many of you - not surprisingly, since it was a hard one to approach. But I think most of you found it worth the effort.

First to face the mirror was mguyer, whose figure does indeed match the reflection. Now, if only he weren't entirely in silhouette - that would be the challenge!

Some clever cheating from james, who at first glance seems to have sidestepped the problem by showing the guy facing the wrong way: but then after pulling his tie up (great hand movements!) he spins around to do the final adjustment. A great new head - but the eyes should move in the final frame so he's looking at his reflection, rather than over his shoulder at us.

Subtle work from Nick Curtain, whose large-backed figure shows just a glimpse of a reflection - but the technique works well. Is this the sort of man to own an antique French mirror, though? A very moving second entry - and a well-judged angle on the reflection.

I enjoyed michael sinclair's animated entry - there's a neat surrealism to seeing a gilded Napoleon performing at Versailles. The only problem here is that the mirrored horse is raising the wrong legs: this is a translation, rather than a reflection! I like the pair of facing knights - I assume you've built one from pieces of the other, but it's hard to work out which. A compliment, of course!

A well built shirt back from brewell, with a back of the head that matches well - and the duplicate flipped Obama poster is a nice touch here. I'm concerned about the position of the elderly man, though: he's some distance from the tie-tying figure, but in the reflection he's right on his shoulder.

The real cleverness in tooquilos' entry is when the spider switches from the man's back to his front: it slides from the front to the reflection perfectly. The eyebrow and eye movements are great, although that fixed grin should perhaps be more of a grimace! I really like the spider's movements, although it does seem a little short-changed in the limb department.

Real genius from katew: what a great choice of character! And the back of La Gioconda has been beautifully constructed. Fabulous, Kate!

Clever work from Andy L - with just the hint of a shoulder. Love the distortion on this one.

I was baffled by Eggbox's image at first (but then after last week, it's what I've come to expect) - until I deciphered the reflected poster. Quick change artist! Ha ha ha!

A clever cheat from dave.cox - and why not, after all. But shouldn't he be looking at his reflection, rather than straight at the camera? A neatly reflected bathroom there, Dave.

A novel approach from Jota120 who, of course, sparked off the whole Challenge. A cleverly achieved reflection, although I suspect this owes more to camera work than to Photoshop. A fabulous second entry - the guy's worked perfectly into the reflection, even down to the line through him where the mirror joins. But... he does need another reflection in the mirror on the right!

After clearly much struggle (evidenced by whinges posted at intermittent intervals throughout the week), Josephine Harvatt has come up with a fantastic piece of work that meets the brief perfectly. A stunning piece of construction, with a beautifully made shirt back and an accurate new head. The only thing I'd change here is the eye direction - he's looking over his shoulder at us. Otherwise, perfect!

Painstaking cloning from maiden - a huge amount of work, clearly. But I'm absolutely intrigued by the 3D version - is this Photoshop? Or did you use another app in here? What a great technique!

A straightforward but effective approach from Lexus - but shouldn't he be looking at his reflection, rather than at us? It's good to see you taking part in the Friday Challenge once again, Alex. Are you really 18? Time for a new avatar!

Excellent new shirt back from vibeke - and that hat is a great touch. But the drection of the head is wrong: he's looking at the corner, where the reflection is looking straight ahead. Tricky things, mirrors!

Clever work from Wayne: the new shirt back doesn't match the original, so the original has been cropped so we can't see the body. What we're left with is a perfect match - brilliant!

Very funny work from The Mad Lep - I love the wires at the bottom of Spiderman's missing leg. A great stab at the reflection, although of course it's on the wrong side: from this angle, we should see Spidey on the left, and his reflection slightly to his right.

Looks like a hand-painted head back from Ben Mills - is that right? What a lot of work! A great shirt, but again - watch the eye position, the guy's looking at us rather than himself.

Accurate work from Deborah Morley, with a shirt back that works beautifully, and a well matched head. Once again, it's the eyeline that goes wrong here. But I do like the position of the seam on the back of the shirt.

A first entry from tedavies13, with a clever piece of work - the large figure reflected in a mirrored office building. I love the idea of her cleaning the glass! The reflection needs to be a little smaller, though, as we're looking up at the building: and I think it would be more effective if her shadow didn't line up with the reflection on the strips between the windows. Good first Friday Challenge entry!

To finish, a little cheating technique that none of you seem to have spotted. To make a reflection look that much more convincing, always add a bevel to your mirror. Take a narrow strip around the border, and copy your reflected background into it, then scale or offset it for the bevel effect. If you can be bothered, add a little Dodge and Burn to the corners to accentuate them:

It was all done in Photoshop CS3 Extended - very simple to recreate.

Open up your room image in Vanishing Point.

Create a Perspective Grid based on the image.

Using the Flyout Button "Settings and commands for Vanishing Point" (just left of the Grid Size: box) and select "Return 3D Layer to Photoshop"

It will open up like a Smart Layer in your Layer Pallette - Double click it's Layer Palette icon to activate the 3D tool and alter the scene as you wish - Rotate, Dolly etc.

As it's a Smart Object any changes will amend the original layer - so to animate a 3D Fly-through you must duplicate the layer for each animated frame - luckily unlike a Smart Object each duplicate is independent of the others so you won't need to rasterize each copy.

Does that make sense.

Also with the fly-out in VP you can send the grid to After Effects as a .vpe file which gives you better control if you perfer to use After Effects like this example from a 2D image

Thank you Steve. The spider "belongs" to a friend of mine. I borrowed the photo from him.

I had been going to mention the "pot plant", Kate, but I wasn't sure if you'd spotted it yourself...
