Well I must be even older, my first computer was a Commodore Vic 20. I started to learn programming on that.

Ok Trevor,

Your first step an animator, so now get yourself a free Photobucket.com account like the rest of us and start putting in some large files sizes (1mb)--you can only go up from here, so I look forward to your animations.

Jota, I remember those multi-platter hard drives too. I too had a few of them crash, or should I say 'Explode'. What a mess!

I also remember learning to type on a bright an shiney new Royal typewriter. A big mechanical monstor that could produce documents, without any electricity at all! I thought it a real treat when we upgraded to the IBM selectric.

And my first computer was the Commodore 64, with built in basic.

Steve you have shown a cruel streak in poking the non-animators of the forum out of their comfort zones with a sharp stick!

Anyway I'll give it a go...

Noise from the Jota120: Soon be taking off Peace be with you.

Vibeke, its before my time (close) but they used to program the stuff using wire threads through magnetic doughnuts (toroids?) . Really weird, but it worked. Too expensive.

Michael, thanks, I have a photobucket account, but does not mean I have to use it does it ? , joking have some other ones too, even my my .com, but its/I'm very slow.

Josepine, I know the Echo, its a local paper here, but

all I was going to give the Echo link, but Mondays front page has tragic things. Things like that get tears running through my eyes
Be safe you yours. Celia might know.

James, recovering from above, you really made me merry.

Deborah, glad you got rid of that pesky lamppost too!!! ;

Wayne, very impresive I don't it think rains very often where you are

Steve, Im looking for the motorised version. But then imagine, who invented it and your name goes down in history!!!

Off now .. into the void and see my mother etc ..........
PS please be safe everyone .... it can only take 25s

Thanks. I wanted to do snow but everyone had already done it beautifully, so I thought I'd be a bit more realistic (for the North of England anyway!)

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
It's very nice Josephine, just pity it doesn't loop.

That's forgivable this is a very tough task for those who have never done animation. But to ensure the animation loops you have to ensure that "Forever" is selected from the "select looping options" at the bottom left of your Animation window, at default it is set to "Once".

I hope that helps - but it is a lovely image nonetheless.

Thanks !
I did loop it but that made the snow shoot back up to the top in defiance of the laws of nature

If I have time I will work on it some more

My first try at animation too, even with Becky's swell optimizing tutorial I couldn't get it any smaller. Nor do I know if I'm using the right photobucket link

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
The animation is great, Ellen, the problem you had with optimising is because the scene is changing from day to night so every pixel in your image is being changed and the GIF has to account for each pixel going through colour changes every frame - you chose a very difficult task for an animation and the fact you got it down to 200k is simply brilliant.

Josephine the snowflakes jump upwards because they don't fully travel from out of the frame top to out of the frame bottom of your scene. The solution is to duplicate the snow flake layer and Ctrl+T (Free Transform) the duplicate layer moving it all the way out of the top of the frame so that it sits precisely at the top of you original snowflake layer (Free Transform was used because you can see the bounding box and know when it's just out of frame) - Release the Free Transform and link the 2 snowflake layers together and as you animate the original layer out of frame downwards the duplicate layer will follow it from the top once the original layer is precisely out of frame in the last frame of your animation you will have an animated snow loop - hope that helps.

Here's an example:

You can make much more complicated animation by layering the snowflakes - in other words have a layer with larger snowflakes, a layer with medium snowflakes, and a layer with small snowflakes stacked with the largest in front and the smallest at the back - you can vary opacity and blurriness, and have the large flakes drop slower than the other layers. If you use the "Tween animation frames" option once you have created your tween you can go to each frame and slightly move the snowflakes left or right randomnly in different frames to give your snowflakes a slight wiggle as they fall to the ground. Adding layers and varying the speed of each layer in this fashion will give your animation much more depth. Just a few suggestions which might help.
