Re: Contest 86: Elvis spotting
In the original Queen Mum photo it's clear that she's flashing the gang sign for the Four Horseman professional wrestling team.

P.S.: No, I don't why there are 5 horseman in the 4 horsemen group.

Re: Contest 86: Elvis spotting
Sadly I'm not to impressed with my entry this week. No time and no inspiration. This will have to do.

Re: Contest 86: Elvis spotting
We started this week with a montage of rare subtlety - in fact, Glen's image was so subtle it was hard to spot Elvis on the bottom right burger. An apt location! The grease in Glen's second image has been beautifully rendered - not just the bevelling and shading, but the flecks of bacon in there as well. Makes me hungry just looking at it.

A great revolutionary montage from stefan: the appearance on the banner beind is a great touch. I'd tend to soften the outlines of all the hair, though - Elvis's in particular looks rather harsh. Personally I'd use the Smudge tool, but if you're pressed for time, the Blur tool can do a good job of fuzzing up that outline. Love the second entry! Very fine texture matching, and a great wry smile on his lips. Great work.

A beautiful entry from Silver Fox, who's managed to combine both elements of my introduction. This has been done with great subtlety, and a high degree of skill: the angles, the shading, the marble texture, all captured well. There's something a touch zombie-like about the eyes, though: perhaps copying them in from the original statue would have been a solution here?

Elvis on the moon! Brilliant! Born2Run's planetary image is fantastic - oh, just noticed it's Mars and not the moon, but same thing. Great texture and shading, a really entertaining image. Is that a monkey next to the King? And the second entry - Elvis Parsley! Excellent! Not just a great gag, but really well realized. And the texture matching in the third entry is perfect!

Great toast from Lexus - it's surprising how few details it takes to make the man recognisable. Is this achieved with Threshold? Or did you redraw the features? most convincing, Alex, I like it.

Elvis in Egypt? Why not? Raffy has placed him firmly in the stones of a pyramid. The face works well, but perhaps there's still too much texture in the hair for it to be truly convincing. A great second entry, though, and a good stab at matching the original typography. Perhaps replacing the word Sergeant as well would have avoided the slight mismatch?

A fantastic gag from maiden - getting the rear view of Elvis to fit on that stool must have taken a lot of work! And a great pretzel, too. I kept looking for Elvis in the cigarette smoke, too - perhaps just wishful thinking!

So Cherie hops from one guitar player to another, eh? Bob's excellent montage has captured the mood perfectly: I'd never have thought it would be possible to find an photograph of Mrs Blair looking sultry. Heavy retouching there, perhaps? An excellent job! And while he looks reasonable in that chunky body, I never quite saw him as Julie Andrews!

A truly wonderful entry from mr. pbody - once again, I'm amazed at how little it takes to say 'Elvis': but by picking just the shades and the quiff, you've captured the likeness perfectly. I laughed out loud at this one!

Great subtlety from tank172, whose starry constellation, once again, holds just the right amount of detail. The twinkle in the eye is a great addition, and the shadowy figures in the foreground lead the eye up to him perfectly. Fine work.

Placing images of people in clouds is really, really tricky. I had to do this with Fidel Castro recently, and it took ages. Paul2005's entry is very close; I think the problem may come from copying cloud texture inside the cutout, rather than drawing it from scratch so it fit the contours of the face. Are the features just a little too well defined?

MGuyer's showing off his extensive wardrobe again, as well as his fine collection of vintage vehicles. A very well placed Elvis in the driver's seat - but does he look a little jaundiced? Perhaps his skin tone needs addressing here? I do like the way he's hidden behind the steering wheel and the mirror, it makes the whole thing much more subtle. I've put so many faces on mount Rushmore over the years, it ought to be easy by now - but every one is still a real challenge. This one's a great attempt!

So is CWBasset following Marty's line in appearing in her own montages? It took me a while to make out Elvis on the side of the basset - very well achieved. Let's hope the animal welfare people don't catch up with you.

A very neat wall painting from Tom, with great added graffiti. To make this kind of image more convincing, I'd change just two things: first, show us the wall from a slight angle, rather than head on; and second, give us someone walking past it, to add a human element, both in terms of scale and interest. Both easy to achieve, and would make a big difference.

A fantastic idea from Eggbox, with a beautifully rendered Elvis replacing the face of the King of Hearts. Personally, though, I've never heard a recording of Elvis performing Beethoven's Fur Elise. Couldn't you find more appropriate sheet music??? And as for the second entry, it seems to me that cafe should be closed down on health and safety grounds. Elvis' face on the soup works well, but I'm afraid you've made a classic mistake with the cream (or milk, or whatever): you have the surface following the line of the jug inside it, rather than horizontal. Unless it's extra thick double Devon cream, it can't do this!

Tee hee! A fantastic entry from jimt - damn, I thought I'd escape being involved this week. A great idea, perfectly executed. What a hoot!

It's all about getting the angles right: and Dek_101 has got this one spot on. The shading, the colour matching, and especially the fitting of Elvis' head within the surgical mask are all exactly right. No wonder he's looking down in the mouth. Love the second entry: suspicious mines! I do love a good pun.

Elvis is well hidden in the tree in Pierre's entry - you can just make him out in the branches. But isn't the reflection of the tree too bright, and too yellow? Look at the reflected tree next to it - it should be much darker than this. Changing the layer mode to Hard Light would do a lot for this one - or, simply desaturate the tree. In the second entry, the hair works well - but the features look too much like a photograph. It's a tricky one, this: perhaps shading to match the contours of the snow would help to make this more like it's part of the landscape?

I don't know how to feel - pleased at the ghostly appearance of Elvis in a pancake, or sorry for the dismal state of Neal's breakfast. No maple syrup? No bacon on the side? This is the next thing to bread and water, Neal. At least have a glass of orange juice with it!

I'm always impressed by jwhite's nature photography, and this excellent shot is no exception. but do rats really have that, um, bizarre an anatomy? Or have you extended this one's capabilities in order to fit Elvis' mug on there? Nuts indeed! A really great second entry, with a well judged sneer on the face of the Elvis impersonator. That man on the left seems to have a nasty attack of creeping Photoshop on his leg, though.

Images in smoke is even harder than images in clouds, as DaltonX discovered. It's a great idea, but needs more work: the features are too clearly defined, there's a slight awkwardness to the texture of the smoke. Going over the features with the Smudge tool would certainly help: you need to make it just, but only just, recognisable. I know I'm being harsh - you set yourself a very tricky job, and it's almost there!

A very subtle Elvis in Whaler's post - but the best thing is the double reflection, creating a bevel in the edge of the mirror. A fantastic effect, and one which really makes the reflection come to life. Ingenious!

I was trying to work out which royal Slim had removed in order to fit Elvis in there: Prince Andrew, perhaps? You'd think they'd have given him a better rank than sergeant. Still, it's good to see Elvis back in his army days. As for the colour: increasing the saturation should help this one, Mark. Take some of the blue out using Curves, as well! Pierre got this one well, check out his solution. Oh, and don't forget the finger fudging from Paul2005, Glen and Born2Run!

A great Russian doll set from yuvalbra, with Elvis' face sitting neatly on the front doll. Best of all, here, is the way the hair has been teased to resemble his quiff: a carefully done, expert job.

There's something deeply charming about Pauline's entry, with a great butler figure (where did you get that from? I always need butler bodies!) and, as raffy says, the flag is a great addition. Nice work - but I'd really like to have seen something on the tray!

Another great week all round, everyone.

Thanks again for your comments Steve. Maybe, like me, Elvis didn't read music either! The milk/cream classic mistake is yet another of those details..details..details. It was , in fact, a recolouring of chocolate syrup which would stick to the sides.

Steve, thanks for the kind words.
Yes, most male mammals have them. The rat in my photograph is a hairless rat and thus some body parts may look more pronounced than those seen on a normal rat.
Crocodilians regurgitate prey hair something similar to a cat fur ball and by feeding hairless rats the enclosure/ water filter maintenance is greatly reduced.

I think that's far more detail than I can cope with right now!

harsh is ok when it's constructive .... I didn't have as much time as I would have liked on this one... and I agree with you about the features being too sharp.... it's a close thing between making a face in smoke recognizable and totally lossing it altogether... I tried adding the smudge tool over the features and I agree it did look better. This was my first time doing smoke.... but I think it's something I'll keep practicing at... definelty looks impressive if done right.... so I'll get there... cheers for the advice Steve

Re: Contest 86: Elvis spotting
Steve I really wanted to put something on the tray, but it was late and I just had no inspiration to go searching for something.

All I really did to this was a simple head replacement. I had to fix up Elvis' neck and change his face colour which was dreadful.

Alice, can't take credit for the flag. It was already there.

Steve I got the picture from http://www.fontplay.com/freephotos/

It was under the mannequin section. This is the first time I have used stock photography. I usually try to do it myself, but like I said, didn't have time this week.

Thanks,Steve! And you're right about the text-don't know why I didn't think of that!(Another senior moment...)Re:the hair-I should have reduced the opacity in that area before dmapping it.I think that would have done it.What do you think?

Thansk for the comments Steve,

In fact the tree is really yellow like this for real. It si why I took the picture in the first place... weird huh? I admit I boosted the contrast and lightness... As for the snow face, you're rigth that you mention it, it looks like aprint on the snow... need to work my 2D to 3D skills!

My second week in and I love this forum, great initiative Steve!
