Re: Challenge 323: Land of liberty
Many thanks for your comment Steve.

I was fighting with the eye level very hard last night. I think but I am not sure that the horizon (the sea) is not eye-level but it is lower if we calculate it according to children. Is that placement of people correct?

I found a photo where is a slope and I think it is a little bit same like in this challenge. The eye-level is lowering with the slope.

Re: Challenge 323: Land of liberty
Emil,

It all depends how high up the beach we're standing. Certainly, the horizon is always on our eye level - and in your second example, we're high up the beach. But in the Challenge beach, aren't we on the same level?

Re: Challenge 323: Land of liberty
Is the eye-level in the challenge picture same as "sea line"?

If yes after it is not still clear for me where is problem with my original picture. Three women are at the eye-level, but I had to place the man with towel and women with ball lower because the children are lower (there is a slope). Am I right or completely out.

The eye level is the horizon, yes - the sea line. Is the man further down the beach really down that steep a slope? To me, he looks too small and too low in the picture...

OK, I think also that there is something disturbing. The man is standing near to the child, so if we compare him to the child he is a little bit hight. I have shifted the man in two ways, I put the man closer to the child and the second I put him on the eye-level. In this version the man is really small but when we compare to the child it seems it is OK.

I prefer this picture but if we compare it to the child the man is really big.

Well, yes, the kids are very small - that's because the whole beach is further away than you've made it. Make the kids larger, and you're there!

Re: Challenge 323: Land of liberty
and the women is in right position? My brain is overloaded. Because if I shift her on the eye line she will be like very large to the children. I think the best way would be delete the children! Thank you Steve for your discussion.

Just seen your entry Stefano, very clever idea and well executed. Mi piace molto.

Thanks Sophie. Glad you like it. I really like your entry. The send onto the statue is very realistic!

Thanks Steve. Good idea to move the children's shadow to lend more credence to the statue shadow. And yes my gull was a bit too large.

Thanks for your comments, Steve. Glad you liked the lettering. I was trying hard to emulate the original film's typeface and setting of disjointed letters.

I thought of it looking at Luis's entry but I haven't had enough time

Re: Challenge 323: Land of liberty
Thanks Steve
I did think about reposting the image, but wanted to see your comments. The original did look quite realistic and you'll have seen from previous posts that I enjoy turning day into night. Quite difficult with the statue with all those folds and wrinkles though.

An interesting debate about the eye line. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that the beach must slope away to some extent because the children are so far below the horizon. I think if Emil had placed the stall sloping downwards towards the sea, it would have enhanced the illusion. My image was prepared on the same basis. You will see that the sand drops away from liberty from left to right.

Nick,

good notice about the stall. I sloped it downwards a little bit. I made the women in front a little bit higher (bigger). Here is my last version. Maybe there is also problem with perspective of the stall.

Re: Challenge 323: Land of liberty
Hi Emil

What I like about the image is the way you have depicted the scale of liberty within the scene and the stall looks much better now.

I would say the figures look about right, but to make them blend properly in the 'golden hour' sunlight, the colour balance needs to be shifted more towards the red / yellow end of the spectrum. Compare the colour of the children to the placed figures and see the difference. Merging studio produced stock images in a sunlit situation is always very difficult and shots taken of figures in a similar lighting situation will have made the job much easier, particularly shadowing, which is challenging to say the least.

Two other small points. The back of the stall is made from fabric and exposed to direct sunlight, so it would be considerably brighter. Secondly, the woman in the foreground is standing on soft sand, but her feet are not sinking into it. Also, look at the size of the footprints around her compared with her feet. The curvature of the horizon would suggest this shot is taken with a very wide angle lens and the relative size of the children would confirm this. Therefore I would have brought the woman closer to the viewer.

Hope this helps. It's always very easy to see points when you're not actually making the image. Great work.

Nick

Re: Challenge 323: Land of liberty
Hi Nick

many thanks for your comment, feel free in it, I really appreciate it. I agree with all your advices. The back of the stall I was trying make it brighter but the result was not good. After your advise I used the color balance (which I used very a little) and hue and saturation (lightness) and i looks that it works. The figures are small in resolution, so when I brought the women closer it was visible that the image is not good but I let it be and I gave some sand on her feets. There is still a lot of work with the figures.

Once again Nick, thank you very much.

Hi Nick. I'd appreciate so much any advice on that technique. It's one of my weak points I'm afraid.
