Re: Contest 227: Grabby little hands
Lot of great stuff this week. I wish I could play, but as my current contract is about over, and I am prepping for a new contract, I have had precious little time. I hope to play again next week! Dave. |

Thanks Wayne. You've done a great job there. Re: Contest 227: Grabby little hands
There's definitely something about dinosaurs that tickles people's funny bones. Are they intrinsically humorous beasts? Or is it just that we laugh at their demise as a way of distracting attention from our own? First to get neolithic was Ben Mills, with our dino pal well settled into the Jurassic Park set. But wouldn't it have been more threatening if his chin was in front of the sign, Ben? A really funny entry from Lexus, with Dino tangled up in wool and needles - and, yes, the hands are just in the right position for that. But from this angle, shouldn't the hat be curving up on the head, rather than down? A dental theme from mguyer, naturally - and great work getting the glove to fit over that bent claw. If I were looking for a dentist, though, I'd choose one with less blood around his own gnashers... A great story from The Mad Lep, with those grabby hands clutching a basket of goodies. Love the hair, and especially the worn, tarnished signs on the tree - a really great touch. Good, jokey choice of typeface, too. Immaculate couture from Nick Curtain: those hands are holding the cane in precisely the way we've all seen Fred Astaire do the same. Perfect angle on the top hat, too - classy work! I love the surreptitious way brewell's Dino is clutching the cards to his chest - most appropriate. Great new lighting, too, it really blends in well with the scene. Hasn't got much of a poker face, though, has he. I think much of the genius of tooquilos' entry is the way the new image of the dinosaur head fits in perfectly with the original - what a great match! And catching the rose in its mouth, with the wink at the end - priceless. You really have to see the flash version for the full effect. Plenty of reptiles from GKB this week - and particularly good variations on the one that appears three times, in different guises (I particularly like the aquatic version). Our Dino looks a bit stuck-on at the front, though: bung a fern in front of him to blend him in! Another fairy tale from Hope Leslie Laust - but what a great take on the story! Interesting to see the Dino clutching the cane in the same way as Fred Astaire, previously. I really like the wool hair bun! An afternoon at the burger bar from Eggbox, with Dino perfectly slotted into the scene. What's most disturbing, though, is that this woman could actually go out in public wearing a pair of rabbit ears. Beautiful work from ziiwow: the lighting, the shadows, the bloody table, the rendering of the neon sign on its tattered background, the contrast with the cool glass of beer - all priceless. And well deserving of a title for you, Zhao. I think it has to be 中国娃娃 - but do let me know if this translates inappropriately! Glorious smoke and fire from Tom, with a touch of lightning at the end of the flame - and look at the way the inside of the mouth is lit up, too. Plenry of great detail, such as the glowing eyes: and the mangled figure fits perfectly into those hands. Dino's certainly losing the battle with King Kong in michael sinclair's epic post. A great piece of work, full of atmosphere and drama: great shadows, too. Could the ape be a little sharper, though? A most entertaining second entry too. A funny sentiment from Maja - and yes, I think all parents feel this way sometimes. A lovely family group, but the childrens' edge seems a little harsh against that back lighting: some soft translucence needed here, I think. I can't imagine what put the decorating idea into katew's head - but it's a really entertaining image, with the cat walking fresh paint across the carpet. Loads of great detail in the drips and spills - nice work. A great animation from james, but it seems to stop before the end: what happens next? Does Dino get his pork chop? Fantastic work on opening the arms wide - this must have taken forever! And I love the ice cream treatment in the second entry - great tail/shadow action. I had a go at translating gaoxiguo's text, and got: "The chart Watermelon Pear is my shot after the synthesis, and to the dinosaur with a very strange, ha ha" - so I'm really none the wiser. An entertaining image, certainly - and those glasses are a great addition. The watermelon is also beautifully blended into the pear! I enjoyed Jota120's hatching dinosaur image - good eye contact between it and the goose, and the severed chick head behind it is perfectly grisly. But it's the second entry that really grabs my attention - more particularly, the gory version with the flying head. There's just so much energy here: the brickwork, the blur on the head, the rearrangement of the claws to hold the axe, the way the dinosaur emerges out of the dust and debris... this is seriously good work, Trevor, and well deserving of our second title of the week. So, let me see... as someone who lists "innovation" as one of his occupations, it just has to be Ingenious Inventor. And we should get you onto translating some of the Chinese entries while we're at it... and a great tribute to Marc Bolan in the third entry. The effort in Josephine Harvatt's entry has gone mainly into the tailoring - and what a good job she's made of it. The Oscar is beautifully clutched in those hands, but the real tour de force for me is the tear leaking from the eye - priceless! The Oscar was, obviously, for Jurassic Park. Did Dickie Attenborough write the acceptance speech? A dig at UK Chancellor Alastair Darling from Deborah Morley -he's the chap in charge of the money here in Britain, and that tatty old case is the budget box Chancellors of the Exchequer have carried for a century or more. Nice clutching, and always good to see a politician being eaten by ravenous beasties - but shouldn't the box be bright red? I like the idea of Ellen's vegetarian dinosaur - he holds that shopping basket well, and looks nicely in place. Good job cleaning the tell-tale bloodstains from his mouth! Dino's head has been well grafted onto a new body in vibeke's entry - and I love the boy sleeping under the table. Looks like he's started unwrapping already! Not sure about the compressed reflection of the skater - why squeeze it up? Eva Roth's entry would be a lot more gruesome if it weren't for the calm expression on the face of the victim - now that's what I call sang froid. A good idea to desaturate, giving the image an almost sepia feel: but the man is a different quality of grey altogether. I find Santa scary enough already... Philbo's entry has certainly made him into a truly fearsome beast! Now, where on earth do you find an image of a crying girl on Santa's knee... Neat work from jwhite, whose Dino is up to his neck in white water. But does he expect to swallow the boat whole? I can't help thinking it would be more dramatic if he were coming at the boat from the side, grabbing it across the bows. Good to see Born2Run back - it's been a year or so, I think, since you set off on your travels. I like the Friends poster, particularly the claws over the shoulders - a nice touch. Bit more contrast on Dino, perhaps? A great second entry, a good play on words there - and neatly expressed in typography. Fantastic work from Wayne: the added wings and horns blend in perfectly, with tremendous colour matching. The flames, the skull... a very consistent, powerful image. Good stuff, Wayne. And a lot of work in the second entry - so birds really did evolve from dinosaurs, eh? Funny work from Paul2007, with Dino on a thrill ride - holding neatly onto that front rail. Lucky he is right at the front - I wouldn't want him behind me when he barfs... A rare entry from Glen - and a neatly achieved homage to Michelangelo. Good grief! Now, this would shake up the creationists a little... Charming domesticity from maiden - how well that pinnie fits! And, of course, it neatly covers the join with Dino's legs. Great headband and rollers, a really nice feel to this one. . . . . . . . . . . Some really entertaining work this week. Of course, the week was somewhat marred by the unfortunate spat that broke out here, but that seems to have been smoothed over. Tolerance is a tricky thing to master: an issue that riles some people can just seem trivial to others. I recently had an email from an irate reader of Art & Design in Photoshop, furious at the fact that I'd parodied Ronald Reagan in one of the tutorials. He'd taken the book back to the store, he told me, and had written to the publishers to tell them he'd never buy one of their books again. I was sorry to upset a reader, of course - but it won't stop me poking fun at Reagan, or Bush, or Obama, or whoever the hell I choose. Free speech is more important than that. And Photoshop is more important than anything. |

Re: Contest 227: Grabby little hands
Thanks Steve, yes the pinny was the perfect means of not having to rebuild the lower parts of the dinosaur... I have learnt well the art of cheating, master ![]() And I totally agree with you about the man who took his book back because of the Reagan montage - I pity anybody who overlooks such a wonderful book merely on the basis that their sensibilities are shocked with a mere parody, but then it's his lost. Recently I wrote a reply to two people regarding the latest HTCIP book on Amazon.co.uk as they refused to buy the book, and rubbished it with their reviews simply because there are some mistakes with the montage on the Book's Sleeve - well it just goes to show 'only a fool judges a book by it's cover' and once again it is their lost for missing out on some superb hints, tips and tricks that will take their own montaging to a whole new level. The best thing I have found about Steve Caplin is that he doesn't tell you what to do and how things "should be done" - He simply tells you this is one way to create the look you're after, feel free to experiment - Thank you Steve for being a great mentor, truly inspirational. I second that, and very nicely said Becky. In the short time I've been here I've learned so much, both from Steve and all of the other members here, particularly on the Friday Challenge. And I'd consider it an awful deprivation if I had to go without a copy of his book, it's a tremendous help. And indeed I'm looking forward to the next one! ![]() Many thanks Steve for everything. ![]() |

Thanks for your comments as ever, Steve. I agree with your last paragraph and would add a link sent to me two days ago. All I would ask is that if you or anyone else is not into Robin Williams, political comment, humour and/or extracting the whatever from politicians then please, please do not open this link...
