Many thanks for your kind comments Nick and Becky. I have to admit, I belatedly looked at your tutorial Becky, by which time I had reduced colours down to 186(ish) which seemed to work! Took me ages to realise a new frame is made from just turning layers on and off. Duh!

Hi Josephine.

You've done extremely well with this and I love the pace of the falling snow. Looks like you'll be joining the ranks in the animation club on here.

A little hint for anyone that is interested.

You can get your animated gif to show here instead of posting a link to it by putting the link in between the square brackets, and using img:// instead of the http://.

For example instead of http://mygif.gif, use {img://mygif.gif}, and place that in the square brackets [] instead of the curly ones that I used for demonstration.

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
Dave I think people are linking them because of their filesize as some are 2-3 megabytes which would really slow the board down. With a link people who have limited bandwidth have a choice to click or not.

Personally I would post a much smaller gif optimised to not more than 400kb on the board with a link to the larger animation.

First attempt at animation, the biggest problem was keeping the file size small enough.

Animation isn't my thing, I've discovered.
Well done to all the people who make animations regularly, I have new respect for you all after this challenge.
Great entries here as usual, well done everyone!
Have a great 2009!

It looks good to me, Celia! I know what you mean, though. It's quite time consuming to do even a simple animation.

Thanks Kate. At one point it looked as if the house wall was cracking open in each frame... I could safely go work for Tim Burton! Not good.

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
Hi All and a Happy New Year.

I haven't posted here for a very long time as I have a new job which is very demanding on my time, so I have had little time to sit down and do the challenges and I do miss them.

Anyway had some time off over Christmas so have managed to get something done for the animation. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be running as smoothly as a gif as it was inside photoshop.

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
Sorry nothing from me this week on account of the BIG FLU!

My entry was to have the house made into a railway station with the Christmas lights switched off, and then to have a locomotive pull in and obscure the railway station at which point the lights would come on indicated by the pulsating flashing glow in the night sky, the locomotive would then pull out of the station and the lights would be off again,, and then another train from the opposite direction would pull in whereby the process would repeat again.

Now I must switch the computer off as I'm starting to feel unwell again

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
As it turns out, I'm booked to take my children paintballing early on Friday morning - which means I'm writing the bulk of this on Thursday, 1st January, after a late night and early morning spent clearing up. So forgive the brevity and any typing inaccuracies!

An unseasonal message from Meltonian - but then any self-confessed hermit would naturally avoid the New Year crowds. A neat achievement, creating the lettering out of Christmas lights.

Some traditional lighting from maiden - I like the smoke, and the wavering shadow on the sleigh is a great touch. Many thanks for all your help this week, Becky - I think you've given a lot of regulars the confidence to launch into animations for the first time.

A rare self portrait from james, and it's good to see all the puzzle pieces coming together. But shouldn't the hand be flipped, with the thumb on the other side? I like the second entry but I feel a shadow under the sleigh would have helped with the sense of take-off at the end. I like the falling snow in the third entry.

Rather beautiful lighting from Nick Curtain: I like the icicles particularly, and the light on the snow is beautiful. The figure in the window is a great touch, too.

Vibeke has really goneto town on this one - a great display! So much for global warming....

An enjoyable display from tooquilos, with a great rearing Santa bike - and the one falling down the chimney is tremendous. Love the soundtrack on the flash version, but why is the picture squeezed up?

Excellent snow scene from vicho, with some real driving snow and great shadows. But no snow on the roof?

Not really a Christmas theme, but I do like powerslave's approach. High drama here!

I like Jota120's fireball out of a hugely dramatic sky. Cant help thinking a light or two inside the house would have added a more human element here.

Looks like Wayne's snow has turned to sleet - a beautifully shiny road surface, with excellent reflections. Great to see the tree lights reflecting in sync as well!

A first-ever animation from Josephine Harvatt - and there's some great falling snow here (either that, or someone's exploded a cushion just out of shot). See! That wasn't so hard! But you do need to set your animations to loop endlessly, or they have to be reloaded at the end. Aha - you've done it. The second entry is beautiful!

A very hand drawn feel to Ellen's first animation, with a smooth transition from day to night. Very nicely achieved, especially the reflection in the pool!

I love brewell's gingerbread man - a fantastic, if somewhat scary animation. A great sense of movement here: perhaps linger a little longer on the final frame?

I like the look of katew's static entry, but the link to the animation doesn't seem to lead anywhere - can you check it, Kate?

Some excellent snow from dave.cox: the snow on the roof, in particular, is very finely judged. No footprints?

Great warmth from Hope Leslie Laust - those are great lit-up windows. Are you sure the snow should be sitting at the top of the roof, though, rather than at the bottom?

Some very subtle glowing from Deborah Morley, and the tree in the window has some great sparkle to it. A very consistent scene.

Intriguing lighting from Andy L: is that firework lettering? Particularly fine glows in the windows, there's a good sense of light in there.

Great twinkly lights from The Mad Lep: a lit window or two in the house would help greatly. But what's that bank of snow/cloud/cotton wool between the house and the moon? A great first animation, Celia.

A welcome return from BigVern, with a cosy window scene. A very long delay on the 'flashing' icicle lights, but the falling snow is a neat touch that adds a lot to the scene.

Great work, and some interesting debate this time around. Happy new year, everyone.

Re: Contest 229: Christmas lights
Thanks Steve and a very happy new year. Sounds like you had a bit of a party on NYE!.

I should have had a go at animation, but it's not really my thing and I just enjoy watching the others.

Incidentally, the figure in the house was there and became more obvious as I increased the levels. There was a comment made that you built the house, but was it not the one you destroyed in a tutorial or demo?
