Contest 6: Shadowplay
Hi Everyone,

TrinityOfOne has kindly agreed to post this week's challenge for me while I'm away - so here it is.

I was holding a clear plastic stencil belonging to one of my kids the other day, and noticed how the light sources above it created really interesting shadows on the table beneath. So this week, I'm giving you a stencil, which you'll find here, and a hand to hold it, which you'll find here. The stencil has a clipping path, so you can use that rather than the Magic Wand to lift it off the background if you prefer.

What I'd like you to do is to put the stencil in the hand, make it 3D enough to be held, and cast a shadow from both. The stencil can be made out of any material you like - plastic, metal, treacle, whatever. Design your own stencil if you prefer. Remember, it's realism I'm after here!

Good luck

Steve

Nicely done, although the letters look like they're in relief, rather than cut out.

Re: Contest 6: Shadowplay
Why? They are cut out

EDIT:I made a stronger shadow behind the hand, and changed the stencil a little bit.

It's the direction of the light, swap the letters' shadows to the right.

The light is coming from top right, so the bevel of the stencil would be darker on the right and lighter on the left. The shadows don't match, the stencil loks like it's about 10cm from the ground but the shadow of the hand would only make it about 1cm from the ground.

Re: Contest 6: Shadowplay
The only thing that doesn't look real about yours is the stencil, so it is pretty realistic, but cmon, regular plastic ?

A little more realistic?

Nice work Kathryn, the additional components really make the scene!

Here is my attempt. It sure is tricky to create a realistic looking shadow for the stencil, i`m still not sure about my shadow but this is as realistic I can manage.

Re: Contest 6: Shadowplay
It's a nice compostion - mine was boring because I couldn't think of anything humorous to do with a stencil. The shadow seems fine to me except perhaps it could do with some Guassian Blur as light passing through a semi-transparent object diffuses and scatters much more than the shadow from the hand would.

Good composition, Ryan. I think the problem with the shadow is the same as with AtomicFog's, the shadow needs to be larger, to match the height of the hand. The hand is very close to the desk but the shadow cast by the stencil indicates that it is quite a distance away.

I think I would concur with that analysis as the stencil shadow is somewhat smaller than the shadow cast from the hand.

Very nice uk2usadaz that's quite a funky looking stencil and I like the pencil effect drawing you have used as a backdrop especially the inclusion of eraser bits.
