Contest 5: Tidy my office
It's summer holiday time, and I'm off for two weeks - during this period, Trinity of One has generously agreed to keep the forum running for me, and will still be posting my ghostly contents once a week in my absence.

In the meantime, here's a view of the dump that constitutes my working space these days. What a mess! I'd be really grateful if you could tidy it up for me while I'm away - or, at least, make some suggestions for how I could improve it. You'll find a high res copy of this file here. Don't get lost under all that paperwork!

Phew that was quite a difficult one to accomplish but I sent in the cleaning ladies from "How clean is your house" Home & Leisure (Sky)

John that's one way of cleaning Steve's office, but I bet he won't be pleased about the loss of all his stuff

Nice work. I'm not sure Mrs Caplin would approve...unless, of course, that is Mrs C.

I changed it a bit. The last one was just temporary.

I'm glad you removed the gif, it was making my eyes ache

She looks a little flat though, mainly due to the difference in lighting, I would suggest some more shadowing. There are 2 main light sources, the window and whatever light is in the room, if you study the existing shadows, they fall slightly up and to the left of their accompanying source, which suggests the light is coming from bottom right, whereas, you have made the shadow of the girl fall quite some distance to the right.

Hmm... I was thinking the light fromt he window makes her shadow on the wall and the other light just lightens that shadow. I don't quite under stand what you are saying . Where should I move the shadow to? Down a little bit more? Anyhow, I will edit it later. I have been up all night, so good night/day .

If the light is coming from the window and she is in front of the window, how could the shadow be behind her?

Technically, given her position, her shadow would fall on the window but would more or less be cancelled out by the light from the window.

The model has been photographed with even studio lighting, whereas her new setting has uneven lighting. The best way to get it right is to look at what's already there.

Yes, I agree, but there is no light source coming from in front of her, only coming from her right side. right? or no?

You're right, there is no direct light in front of her, so, she would be lit less brightly. The light casting the shadows on the wall to the right of the window appears to be coming from the very far right (possible another window or wall light, Steve mentions these in the book). From the way the shadows are strong on the printer and poster to the left, I'd say the light is somewhere behind the desk, as it's not affecting the PC or monitor, which are quite dark in comparison.

Re: Contest 5: Tidy my office
I see, so she should be darker and the *Mac* and moniter should be lighter? I haven't read any of his books yet, since I just found out about this website form www.photoshopcafe.com. I just ordered his book on Ebay .

The girl should be darker but with highlights where the light hits her. The monitor you have added is far too bright at the moment.

You'll find Steve's book very, very useful!!

I won't get into the light-source issue but I HAVE found the thing which has been bugging me about that image: Where is that girl's other arm?

...I was going to put all the stuff on the desk into that bald guy's mouth but the resolution is much too low, so I guess I'm going to have to sit this one out.

Hi, good work so far guys, Ive been working really hard this week so havent had a chance to have a go, but will look at it next week sometime if I get a chance. I couldnt top Maidens effort though, thats so cool!! Great concept, and even a narrative to the pic, the cleaning ladies is a beautiful touch!! The chair and tray are really well placed too. Anyone managed to fit in Steves famous watercooler though?? Hope the ladies have left that there or Steve will dehydrate!! Heh!

I'm not sure that Steve will be too happy to find that Maiden has stolen his printer and only left him the sheet feeder though.
