Contest 88: Piccadilly Circus
London's Piccadilly Circus has had neon signs covering this building since 1910 - and, more recently, they've been replaced with an array of sophisticated electronic displays. Of course, the whole thing looks a lot better at night. can you oblige? High res is here.  |

Was photoshoppin' all morning to get this realistic portrayal . . . (Also used my skills to add drama by altering the perspective - and updated the signs a little for good measure too)

Apparently I have taken Paul's approach to this challenge. Having spent many hours 'shoppin' Steve's picture to get the afterdark look, I realized that once the sun went down and the lights went on, there was Steve looking down upon all of us.  |

I'll have a try but I don't know if I'm any good at that. I guess I should do that in the new tutorials sections so please hang in there. I'll try and do that over the weekend. |

Hi Lexus, I just thought I'll give you a few hints righ here . Hope I don't forget anything as I don't have as clean a workflow as Steve has in the book. I tend to go back and forth to things. But basically.... I pulled a matte on the buildings etc. using the Channels method,but in this case I guess you can use the magic wand. Then I control( command) J-ed to put it on a new layer. Then it's just a case of adding a sky (with full moon so I didn't have to make the scene to contrasty) and darkening and color adjusting the buildings with curves. I also like to do a Hue and Saturation adjustment where I colorize the scene to a nice dark blue. Then pull up the Fade command and put it back to about 25 %. That way you get some of your original color back and everything should somehow "fit". To turn on the neonlights I pen tooled all the lights including the green of the traffic lights and the lights in windows and put them all on seperate layers. Then put the layer mode on color dodge. As they all are on seperate layers you can do adjustments for each layer with curves etc. until it looks right. Hope this was helpful. |

And as you can see I left a bit of the original sky at top left and forgot to turn a neon light on but lets assume it's out of order. Nobody`s perfect ......... |
