Contest 191: Shipwreck!

I was on a short break in Egypt last week, and while on a snorkelling trip I spotted this rather splendid shipwreck. The boat went right past it, so I was able to get some detailed shots.

Of course, this wreck would look a lot better at the bottom of the ocean than sticking out of the coral reef like this. Can you oblige?

I've supplied a larger than usual starting image this week, so you can choose either to include a section of the ship at full size, or the whole thing if you shrink it down.

That's very convincing - how did you do it?
I've tried and I can't get quite the same effect.

Thanks for the kind comment, although you seem to have achieved a wonderful result in my view. I simply brought the wreck image into the fish tank image and found that Soft Light gave the most realistic effect. I used colour range to select the sky and then applied a mask, which was then blurred slightly and Levels applied to choke the mask. To add depth and to give an impression of being under water, I applied some gaussian blur to the ship. Some of the fine detail was lost in the process, but I accepted that because a ship, having been submerged for some time, would lose superstructure anyway.

I've noticed that others have commented to the effect that Save For Web seems to throw colour out, but I've never noticed that myself. I'm fairly new to the Web, last December in fact, so still very much in the learning stages.

Thanks for that, Nick. I think you went to a posher Photoshop school than me! I used gaussian blur for the underwater effect, too. I also played with softlight but didn't get the same effect as yours - might be the darkness of my shot.

Still can't get the same flatness of tone that you got on the shadow areas, so I'll just keep trying.

This is an aquarium that I did in 3DMax as another exercise a couple of weeks back. It needed something in it, and this seemed rather fitting.
