Challenge 783: Carpet fitting
I visited this ruined castle in France this summer, and was impressed by the extent to which the ground floor remained intact. This could be a great place to live, but you'd need to take a strimmer to all those weeds and put a proper floor down. Mariner, this could be right up your street. High res is here.  |

Steve, this looks to me more like a dried-up moat than a ground floor. Surely the draw bridge gives it away, or am I missing something? |

Michael It's nice to have someone who agrees with me: what works against it is the excessive high-contrast shadows along with a "sooty-looking" castle ruin. I have had to spend a lot of time cleaning/tidying up the mess; anyway, I bit the bullet, and kept the brief, but if Mr Caplin thinks he's going to get treats like this all the time...

Not quite sure why Michael. Since you have relegated it to background why not just leave it as is. I think Steve fancies himself as Lord of the Manor. He's finished the restoration now he needs to choose the furniture ......... When I saw this I thought "Yes! Architectural restoration with matched perspectives: that's right up my street!". Well pride and falls and all that ...... I came completely unstuck! Ages spent putting patch upon patch to try and get stuff to work. Terrible struggle and not a great result. Problem is builders arrive here tomorrow for the week. Dust covers going into place and I won't be getting any more Photoshop time. So I am posting as is. No other choice than to post or simply skip it.

Excellent results Michael and David. My problem with this challenge is the lack of claritiy of the building, especially its right wing. It seems to have no depth, so I am having to invent it. |

Sooty stains and lack of clarity don't bother me. I rather like them. Imperfections give reality to an image. Usually I end up inventing them if they aren't there. My problem lay not so much in the building itself as in my complete overconfidence in thinking that it would be easy to re-build. It started with not being able to get the ground to work properly at all. Until I realised that I had completely failed to appreciate that there is quite a strong slope from beneath the drawbridge to the corner to the right of the barred window. It took me far too long to catch on that there was a change of level involved. I am very impressed by how well Chris has managed to fudge his way round this without it being apparent at all. That fantastic David. Turning it outside in/inside out is a brilliant idea! I love old and abandoned buildings of any type. As I walk through them, I try and imagine the time when they were in their glory and had life running through them. Being in Australia, we are denied of this beauty..as the oldest building is only 200 years old, at the most. Because it's very furtive. By no means obvious. I fiddled with it for ages too.
