Challenge 906: Stairway to heaven
This week's Challenge comes from Vibeke, who spotted the sculpture in Christchurch last December. The lake is all very well, but where else could that staircase lead? For those who would enjoy an almost impossible Challenge: can you construct a background that matches the perspective of the stairs? High res is here. ![]() |

Re: Challenge 906: Stairway to heaven
Having missed two weeks I am still of limited availability but hope to able to have a go at this later in the week. After all setting a perspective challenge is red rag to bull for me! Here's hoping I can fit it in. Loved the last two weeks entires. Som really off the wall ideas! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 906: Stairway to heaven
This is more difficult than it looks. The idea of conforming to the perspective is somewhat notional. There are two completely different conflicting perspectives here. The true image perspective, which is a twin vanishing point perspective defined by the base of the stair and the horizontals of the treads, and the false single vanishing point perspective implied by the taper to a point. I will be seriously impressed by anyone who can manage to reconcile these in real perspective terms. I don't even think it's possible. I think the best chance is to do what Loyd has successfully done, which is to create an image which 'seems' fine to the eye even though, if you stop to analyse, it doesn't hold up in real terms. I think we might see a lot of ingenuity here. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 906: Stairway to heaven
Schedule change means I have had time to try this sooner than expected. This not really on brief but it is playing games with the perspective, (real perspective - not the taper). ![]() ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Thanks David, you're most kind remarks are appreciated. While I was thinking about what on earth to do with this, I remembered an infrared shot I made from three years ago and decided to give it a chance. Yours is most clever, I really like it... great idea! |

That is staggeringly close to a convincing forced perspective Loyd. I am seriously impressed. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 906: Stairway to heaven
I have decided that the best way to deal with this is to avoid any strong perspective aside from the steps themselves. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Aesthetically, and artistically that is very beautiful David: it all comes together extremely well. ![]() I hope my perspective is on its best behaviour...David? ![]() ![]() |

Thank you. I really enjoyed doing it.
That is seriously ingenious Michael. Yes! It's spot on. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 906: Stairway to heaven
Well you succeeded! ![]() ![]() ![]() Joking aside Michael I notice that whenever you modify my images its always to slightly flatten and brighten. I do like a bit of 'moodiness' in my images. I don't know if if just a difference in taste or whether maybe your display is maybe set up darker than mine. I often wonder about this and how my work looks on other people's screens. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

There's something incredibly satisfying and quite compelling about that Loyd. I love just watching it. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

I never cease to be amazed at the imagination on display on HTCIP. Some amazing images from such a simple subject. Still can't come out to play; will be back soon. _________________ If at first you don't succeed then skydiving is not for you. |

Re: Challenge 906: Stairway to heaven
I find the first stair growing from behind the rock formation by far the most successful Anna. Only problem is I kept waiting for you to animate him walking up it! ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 906: Stairway to heaven
Anna, well done... Jacob's Ladder works nicely! David - I really like your Angels... and the more I thought about it, I started to wonder how it might look as an animation. With that said, I offer my sincerest apologies for this effort. I made no changes to your original, only added ten separate effects to obtain this result. Disclaimer - For amusement purposes only. ![]() ![]() It turned out much 'too busy' but you get the idea... ![]() |
