Challenge 947: Welcome to Ditchling
The Sussex town of Ditchling is home to our own GKB. He's sent me this old photograph he found from around 1900.

It's very faded, it's black and white, and some of the paper is ripped.

Can you update it to the town of today? Or suggest other improvements that would benefit the denizens of Ditchling? Gordon tells me the shop on the left is now a jeweller, and there's rather more traffic these days.

High res is here.

Councillor fights erection in High Street!
Controversy is raging in the quaint old town of Ditchling over "entirely inappropriate" new housing constructed by wealthy nouveau riche weekenders from London.

Well done David. I am very impressed by the speed and accuracy of your entry. To avoid copying you I will now have to think of another angle. That's part of the fun of this game.

Thanks Michael. Not very exciting, just pure technique, but I like that sometimes.

It was provoked because, while wondering what to do, the corny old 'Councilor' joke popped into my head out of the blue. Thought I'd give Josephine a run for her money.

Beat me to it David, not sure if this was what Steve was after BUT since the name of the site is "How To Cheat ......" -
I thereby cheated:

This is not an entry but is relevant (kind of).

I ran Photoshop's neural Restoration filter followed by the neural Colorize filter. I left everything on default and let Photoshop's AI do it's thing with no input or adjustment from me of any kind. I have to say I am quite impressed. With careful tweaking I think one could do something really quite impressive.

Re: Challenge 947: Welcome to Ditchling
The aircraft is a Bristol Boxkite which first flew in July 1910. The small shop on the right, behind the main building, was a sweet shop at one time and, later, the doctor's surgery. It is now owned by the people who own the larger house and is used as an Air B&B. Some 25 years ago I considered buying this house myself. The corner building on the left has been, variousy, a greengrocer, a restaurant and is now a jewellery shop where they make their own jewellery.

Kevin, Shirley, Nick and Nikki are all very upset about the multi-storey car park being built where their houses were

The restorations are lovely Gordon! The colour is particularly fine. I like the way you have left the sky away from the obvious blue.

Nice work y'all... I can't compete with these so I had to re-think it.

Re: Challenge 947: Ditchling - another look
Animated -

Non-Animated -

...and that's it for me.

Re: Challenge 947: Welcome to Ditchling
That's a very smart solution to a not very easy image Loyd. Non animated is better in this case.

This was much harder than I expected and I haven't really quite pulled it off .......

..... but it was a lot of fun to do!

David, Gutted, I just finished this and was about to upload it when I saw yours of a very similar theme. Sorry but can’t go back to drawing board this late in the day. Just put it down to great minds thinking alike again.

Re: Challenge 947: Welcome to Ditchling
Oh God! Sorry Ant. I think that's the second time that's happened recently.

But not so similar. I have confined myself very specifically to one narrow time slot. You have managed to bridge aeons in a single image.

Strangely there's something about the focused aspect of this challenge that I think could see a number of 'parallels' emerging.

It didn't occur to me to look at Google Earth. It would have saved me at least four hours of recolouring! But it's beautiful to see how little the village has changed in a century. Gorgeous works so far!

Re: Challenge 947: Welcome to Ditchling
David, my first thought were the neural filters. However, after ramping up the levels, and using only Colourise - this was the best it came up with. For some reason my Restoration option is greyed out.

With that new background of mountains I won’t need to pay for expensive ski trips to Italy or Austria ever again 🤣🤣🚠
