Challenge 973: Having a ball
There's a small funfair near La Rochelle in the charming town of Chatelaillon (see, Mariner, I do go outside) with such attractions as this one. When it's in use a child is inserted into a large polythene ball, which is inflated with air so that (a) it can be rolled around on the water surface, and (b) the child can breathe. When I took this photograph the ball was deflated – you can see it draped at the back of the shot. Can you show me how the scene would look when the ball is in play? High res is here. |

I'm glad you stayed out of the museums long enough to take this photo, Steve. The animators will probably like this, and so shall I. |

Aha! I have to go dig in the archives. Somewhere I have photos of my grand children, when they were small, playing in these at the annual Brussels Foire. I'm sure I still have them somewhere. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Unfortunately this particular animator is not going to be able to do anything for the next two or three weeks as I am off to France for a while. Y’all have fun with this one. _________________ |

Re: Challenge 973: Having a ball
This is seriously devious Steve! Much, much harder than it looks. Despite having the perfect ready made photographs of my granddaughter and grandson using these balls, sitting right here in my family photos, combining them with your background is an absolute nightmare. The problem of course is that the balls are transparent so you can see the original background through them. Trying to get rid of this while keeping some of the feel and texture of the balls themselves quickly becomes a nightmare of multiple blend modes and masks. Although I have sort of pulled it off, the balls have lost much of their texture and solidity. My advice to others is don't try and tackle this head on as I did. Try and find a cunning way of sneaking around the problem entirely and avoiding it! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Wisdom after the event ......... Looking at the deflated coloured spheres it occurs to me that of course I could have saved myself a lot of headache by quite simply tinting my spheres. Isn't twenty twenty hindsight wonderful? _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David - I'm finding some 'work-arounds', but I miss many of the features and capabilities of the old software. |

Re-learning is tough. Especially if you've been married to the old one for a long time. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Used the main one for more than twenty years... there is nothing new that I have found so far that comes close. |

EDIT The silly robot animation was never really intended to be an entry, so I have replaced it with this one: |

Steve has set us with an interesting technical challenge. No David, it's meant not to touch the water (site owner take note), on account of quasi-pseudo surrealistic reasons. |

Not sure if the cylinder isn't a re-incarnation of a medieval torture instrument!! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Excuse recent absences - life has been getting in the way as per - meanwhile here is my attempt - nowhere as convincing as other entries (particularly impressed by the animations and love Michaels dolphin - but hammy seems happy enough if a little apprehensive _________________ I'm not really bad - I just draw that way |
