Challenge 1001: The dynasphere
I'm sure I remember vaguely from my childhood that '1001' used to be the name of a household cleaner, and was tempted to do a Challenge along those lines but luckily for you I couldn't be bothered to do the research. Instead, my attention was (for no apparent reason) drawn to the dynasphere, a bizarre one-wheel vehicle patented by one John Archibald Purves in 1930. A fitting subject for a Challenge, I thought. But it turns out that all images of the dynasphere are the property of image libraries, all of which would call in the lawyers if I were so reckless as to include one here. So instead, as your starting point, I found this image of a 3D model of the dynasphere (Gordon, you can find it here, yours for $10. Or just make your own.) But the model is very basic, and has no driver. Can you oblige? High res is here. |

"1001 cleans a big, big carpet For less than half a crown" In 1960, when I was very young half a crown was the same as two shillings and six pence, which was enough to buy you two loaves of bread. Then. |

I had an ear worm singing the music from that very ad. Ohhhh I do hope it stops soon 🤣🤣🤣 [/quoted] I immediately got the earworm of “Cleans umpteen things clean … police man’s helmets, Blackpool Tower” but then on several repeats added Mr Sheen, a totally different cleaner. Funny how I can't remember what I had for breakfast. |

Sometimes things that rotate do not, they will break-down on occasion... For the record, the background clouds are stationary, a first layer of scrolling clouds are a bit slow, and a second layer only slightly faster. Animation is 5 seconds long with a four second loop transition. Thanks to photoshop.london for the characters. |

Re: Challenge 1001: The dynasphere
Wow they are coming in quick this week! Fun stuff! From Wikipedia: "The Dynasphere (sometimes misspelled Dynosphere) is a monowheel vehicle design patented in 1930 by John Archibald Purves FRSE (7 August 1870 – 4 November 1952) from Taunton, Somerset, UK. Purves' idea for the vehicle was inspired by a sketch made by Leonardo Da Vinci (Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci. 15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519) from Florence, Italy. However, debate has raged over the validity and provenance of this self portrait of Da Vinci negotiating a curve in his home city of Florence, with many sceptics pointing out the drawing's several improbabilities, not least of which is an apparent lack of any motive power. Others have suggested that this is because the wheel was self powered by Da Vinci himself in the manner of a treadmill." For those as wants to know I knocked out a very quick basic 3D model of this myself in Sketchup and exported it as a sketchy outline in the position and perspective I needed to fit the background. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Re: Challenge 1001: The dynasphere
A very rare photo of John ‘Archie’ Purves being forced to retire from the 1958- 24 Heures du Mans. Officials decided that his ‘Dynasphere’ was an extreme hazard to the other drivers and the integrity of the race, he and his ‘car’ were forever banned from racing in France. |
