Challenge 1012: Unwrap me
Passing through Cambridge train station last week, I came upon this curious wrapped sculpture in the forecourt.

It's a very unusual shape. What on earth could that wrapping be covering up?

Warning: anyone who googles what it really is and sticks it on the plinth will be severely punished. Bonus points if you retain the rope, though.

High res is here.

I don't know what 'that' is, but this is what I first thought of...

Well, the temptation was too great... had to google it, and was quite surprised to find out that in fact it was a statue of an alligator with a snapping turtle on its back. Who would have guessed that...?

When Steve took this picture outside Cambridge station the wrapped statue was in fact waiting to be loaded onto a train for Wimbledon.

Non Brits you may need to look here .

Apparently not everybody sees beauty in this piece of art.

Frank these are just great. But one thing puzzles me .........

The lighting on the 'floating' cloth and the translucent shadow beneath in the first image are, to my eye, absolutely immaculate! Perfectly done and totally convincing! I could happily accept that as real.

Not sure why that's been lost in the second image, with a slightly desaturated Gavin, faintly bleached sheet and a dense shadow, when there is no reason I can see, for them not to be identical to the first.

I just went googling and discovered that you have adapted a real photo and that your second image is in fact very close to the original in terms of colour and contrast..

However, my comments still apply. In fact I find your first image much more striking and satisfying than the original.

Thanks David,
I think I may have inadvertently doubled the shadow in the second image,And I did desaturate Gavin a little in second image.

Interesting that the picture Steve gave us is in fact the actual display with nothing underneath confusing a lot of people (including me til I found the write up on it).
Another quote " the statue “is intended to provoke debate”.

I think this point of view makes more sense.

All 3 are good one's Ben - I had thought of something similar but got misdirected after some research. I guess a lot of people thought it was a terrible waste of the public's money.
Agree Loyd.
