Challenge 1016: The wind van
I was driving back from a gig in Manchester last week when I passed this curious sight. The photo had to be taken through the car windscreen so it isn't the best quality, but you can see why I absolutely had to take it.

I'd love to see what happens when the engine is turned on.

High res is here.

Note: I’m away in France on my hols, so you’ve got two weeks for this one.

Well that's a great start.

Bonus points for correctly guessing the name of the cameraman.

Could the cameraman be umm...what's his name now? Dave, David...

Both entries are terrific! But I burst out laughing with Steve at the helm. It's perfectly placed.

I'll do an animation later in the week (or next) but I couldn't resist this one

Anna

My immediate reaction was 'Of course!! I wish I had thought of that!'

If the cameraman isn't you David, then I haven't a clue.

Anna, what a great idea... like DavidMac, my first thought was 'why didn't I think of that!'

Sort of, almost, on topic(ish) .... I did use the propeller van image.

Thank you Anna for triggering this! Hope it's not too plagiaristic.

A word of explanation for non Europeans.

The Netherlands has over one thousand caravan parks. Caravan holidays are more popular there than anywhere else in Europe - the modest compact caravan being the most common.

Outsiders often claim this love affair with caravan holidays is because the Dutch are ...... um ...... 'price sensitive'.

Whatever the truth, the Dutch love affair with their caravans is often regarded as something of a joke by the rest of Europe.

You need to ask him about that...

To quote Michael Caine "Not many people know that.". But 'tis so.

Fireball XL5 - The early years.

A bit of an illusion going on here. Clockwise or counter-clockwise?

(Probably have to watch it loop a few times to see the effect.)

You are really on form this week.

I get predominately clockwise with flashes of counter.

Re: Challenge 1016: The wind van
According to internet posts I have read, the direction you perceive in rotationally ambiguous videos is due to whether you are left or right brain dominant.

Physiological and philosophical contemplations of this nature have always fascinated me. Do you, for example, perceive the moon as blue or green cheese?

I've never thought of the moon as being any kind of cheese...

Re: Challenge 1016: The wind van
Some really good images from such a simple subject.

Loyd I love the concept of Fireball XL5 being powered by a radial piston engine. It cries out for animation … watch this space.

I saw the posts about rotation direction. The perception of left or right rotation is highly influenced by the stroboscopic effect which we have discussed before in the forum. You can see this most effectively in old cowboy films when the stagecoach is being chased at speed when the front wheels are rotating correctly but the rear wheels appear to be rotating backwards and sometimes the wheels appear to be stationary.

This phenomenon depends, partly, on frame rate in the camera but there are other factors that come into play.
